Affects all iPhones out of the box, no apps installed or anything setup like Siri etc, basic scratch setup, crackles on calls. More noticeable when the volume is at max. 16/16 handsets at our office have the bug, all from different suppliers and on various networks.

audio driver for earpiece. As its only affects calls (cellular, VoIP and Wifi calling) and doesn't affect media playback.

This actually makes me feel better about it getting a quick fix. If it truly affects all (or a large number) of phones they can't ignore it and will do everything they can to fix it without replacing hardware.

#staticgate! LOL. It seems I always miss the #gates.

iPhone 4 #antennagate - mine worked fine
iPhone 5 #scuffgate - mine lasted fine
iPhone 6 #bendgate - mine never bend
iPhone 6S #nogate - as far as I recall
iPhone 7 #hissgate - mine isn't hissing
iPhone 8 #staticgate - skipping this one
iPhone X #notchgate - looking forward to this one
Watergate wasn't about water. Please stop.

“The noise issue can be bypassed by using headphones or the speaker phone option on an affected device, suggesting the issue lies in the software rather than the hardware.”

How does the noise going away when played through different hardware suggest that this is a software issue? I would draw the opposite conclusion, but perhaps digital manipulation of the sound could lead to a software fix for a hardware issue.
Because when you disconnect the earphones or come off of loudspeaker, the issue is resolved for the rest of the duration of the call. If there was an inherent fault with the earpiece speaker only, doing these steps would not remedy the problem.

I have this problem on my 6S+, always thought it was just carrier issues because it doesn't always happen. Happens more times than not tho, oh well.

wasn't this a reported problem with the 7 plus models from last year...which they learned was related to the dampers (i think that's what they're called) around the processors? It was a slight hissing buzzing sound? I actually had that issue. It was also something that you could hear when you zoomed in or out while video recording.

No, this is different. Very annoying static/clicking type noise while on most (but oddly not all) calls. Fortunately it doesn't happen when using a Bluetooth headset (99% of my calls).

I just upgraded to the 11.1 developer beta and haven't been able to reproduce the problem. If I notice it later I will report back.

Please keep us posted one way or the other! Thanks!

People have been saying this for 20 years. Yawn.

Might be true, but when you have 5 overloaded devs working on a project, cutting corners is anticipated. When you have $230 billion dollars and hundreds of thousands of employees in billion dollar campuses, making mistakes left and right is kind of odd.

At the same time my impression is that the larger the company the more complex ”the machinery” gets, and more mistakes and the larger the chance of ”the human factor” (i.e. people making mistakes) gets. I'm not defending Apple per se (I also many times think their stuff should work even better considering they are behind both hardware and software), but I think many times we don't see the larger picture when we critique things.

In my experience the 11.1 beta has fixed the static problem completely, as well as, generally improved the overall performance and battery life of the phone.

I am already using my phone on low power mode, as the phone is fast enough. But, wondering how it would be speed update and better battery performance.

If I can make it 2 days with single charge..

I think I could get pretty close to 2 days use, but I admit my phone use might not be as heavy as some users. I work at a computer all day so I don't rely on my phone for social media and stuff during the day.
