Apple Confirms Google Gemini Will Power Next-Generation Siri This Year

In a statement shared with CNBC today, Apple confirmed that Google Gemini will power the next-generation version of Siri that is slated to launch later this year.

"After careful evaluation, we determined that Google's technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we're excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users," the statement said.

The report explicitly mentioned that Google Gemini will power Siri, as was expected. Apple's decision to lean on Google's artificial intelligence technology should result in the revamped Siri being more capable and advanced than it otherwise would have been, as Gemini's large language model is significantly larger than Apple's own model.

The next-generation version of Siri is expected to be introduced with iOS 26.4, which will likely be released to the general public in March or April.

Apple first announced the personalized Siri features during its WWDC 2024 keynote, but last year it announced that they were delayed. The new capabilities will include better understanding of a user's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls. For example, Apple showed an iPhone user asking Siri about their mother's flight and lunch reservation plans based on info from the Mail and Messages apps.

Update: Apple and Google today announced that Gemini will help power not only a more personalized version of Siri, but a range of future Apple Intelligence features.

You probably don't need a Google account to use Siri.

Apple needs to give assurance that the Gemini-powered Siri doesn't 'phone home' to Google or snoops on what's already in your phone.

The part where their competitors stole a huge march on them.

Apple has no competitors, competition is for loosers. Apple is a monopoly in its own right. They have stuff no one still has and never will. Apples vertical integration is unmatched in the industry, google tried and failed,.

I think this is the point that people aren't putting enough thought into. What you're saying is 100% right, so why would Apple risk all that by just handing over all the data to Google?

Everything so far points to it being like a library that has bad dictionaries. You love your library because they don't track you; you can check out most any book you want, but every time you want to look up a word you're frustrated because they only have Joe Bob's Crappy Dictionary at this library. But now they announced that they're replacing Joe Bob's Crappy Dictionary with the Oxford English Dictionary. They're not making you go to a different library, you're just going to be able to look up words and get a much better definition now.

Everything we've seen so far indicates that they're just using a better dictionary. Nobody has said anything about sending users to the library across the street for all their dictionary needs. Why would they knowingly tarnish their reputation by sending you across the street when they could just stock that dictionary on their own shelves (especially when they just invested so much in creating nice privacy protecting shelves)?

The licensed gemini would be run on Apples own hardware. There is no safety issue.
