LOL. Connect to iTunes is the solution? So much for that post PC era that was bragged about like what, in iOS5?
Scot Forstall is rolling his eyes right now

And this is Apple. I'm readying the popcorn when it's time for the carriers' servers failures. :D
The other solution is to go to your house, which presumably does not have open WiFi, and not use a Mac or PC to activate.

Honestly, it's a bug, sure, but I wouldn't necessarily jump at the chance to send my billing information over an open WiFi network.

Anyone having any issues logging into the App Store and Media at all? Been having issues all evening and can’t get it to log in.

I just keep getting an error.

So you immediately restored from back up then updated? I’m wondering if I need to setup as new phone, then update, then restore.
Yep... first thing I did was power on the new phone and went straight to a full restore from a backup on my computer.
iCloud backup/restore can have issues, but a direct connection is dead on reliable.
After that, the eSIM activated within seconds of booting. From there I did the OTA update to 16.01.
Really simple.
Swapping my wife's phone now. Taking a little longer as she has way more crap on her phone to backup and restore. 😂

Apple has confirmed that customers activating new iPhones may encounter an issue where device activation during initial setup doesn't go through on Wi-Fi, saying the problem is "under investigation."

In a memo seen by MacRumors, Apple says that "there is a known issue for iOS 16 that may impact device activations on open Wi-Fi networks." To resolve the issue, Apple says customers should select "Connect to Mac or to a PC with iTunes" in the initial iOS onboarding process when prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network and then return to the previous screen and try again on Wi-Fi until the activation goes through successfully.

Apple noted in the memo there are no current official fixes and that support staff should "not create a repair [case] for the issue." Unfortunately, the bug is untimely, as customers worldwide begin receiving their iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max pre-orders.

For new iPhone 14 customers, there is an available iOS 16.0.1 update that fixes an issue with activation and migration during setup. If you're facing issues activating your iPhone 14 out of the box, you may need to restore with a Mac or PC to iOS 16.0.1 to fix the bug and fully activate your new iPhone.

In a support document, Apple tells new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro customers that "iMessage and FaceTime might not complete activation" until they've updated their new iPhones to iOS 16.0.1.

So I got my phone activated worked for about 10 min then my esim data just vanished. No more service. And I’ve been on live chat for about 6 hours trying to fix it with Verizon.
This really make me want to return this phone and go get a pre paid plan. This shouldn’t be this hard this isn’t worth this time and effort.
Apple really sh*t the bed with this tile out.

That really sounds like a Verizon issue, no?

Activating the SIM not the problem with me. My iPhone 14 crashed several times when trying to transfer all my settings and apps. etc. I am now uploading from my MAC iPhone backup. Fingers crossed!

Surprised my update went as smooth as silk. Put the pro max next to the xr and the update started right up. Took about .5 hour phone rebooted and then I installed the update. Rebooted and noticed quite the difference from a phone 4 years older.

““To resolve the issue, Apple says customers should select "Connect to Mac or to a PC with iTunes" in the initial iOS onboarding process when prompted to connect to a Wi-Fi network…”
Now read this part closely…
“and then return to the previous screen and try again on Wi-Fi until the activation goes through successfully.”
So… absolutely no laptop necessary.
It’s just a matter of clicking a button, clicking a back button, and then trying over Wi-Fi again.
No computer is actually used in this process.
When I set up my iPhone 14 Pro Max yesterday I didn’t have any issues so it may be fixed.

Software has bugs, news at 11?

All software has bugs and Apple is so notorious for release day bugs that the advice on new products and OS releases for as long as I can remember has been wait for the either the second version or the first point release respectively. This one just happens to be a particularly unfortunately placed bug for a phone release

Time to trade my iphone in for a samsung...
I've had 1 samsung fail on me. Note 10+ the battery connector on the board fried. Only once though.

I've had 9 iphones fail on me in the past 4 years.. I'm done. Their techs are absolute losers

Isn't iOS 16.0.1 correcting this?

I did an x.x.1 update before I got my 11 (as I remember), and couldn't switch to it until Apple released the next update that would install on both phones. All I could do was sit and stare at it and wonder how good it would be when I was able to actually use it.

I would NOT recommend doing that update until Apple specifically ways you can and still migrate. I mean, just in case.

That's bad luck there. So far, I have had three 'fail', and all were replaced quickly. Once the Genius apologized that they didn't have a refurbished iPhone to swap for and would I take a new one. (Well, NO! I want a refurb!!) That was awkward...

'Well, thanks...'

He apologized because they had to keep the box and accessories. (Why, I don't know)

Didn't Samsung have the 'pocket heater' incident where their phones were spontaneously bursting into flames? I guess winter is coming in the northern hemisphere. But all joking aside, everyone has to decide what they will put up with. Samsung does good tech. Enjoy...
