I like how everytime we see a patent app or rumors of new iPhone features, people come out of the woodwork to scream, "this should have been there from the start!!! Right behind mms and copy/paste!!!!?!"

Without even mentioning how ridiculously unnecessary c/p and mms Both are, does anyone realize this is an iPhone? Yeah great some smart phones (certainly not every phone as has been suggested) have a start screen or todo screen. Well those phones don't have 3.5" glass all touch display do they? Those phones don't instantly sync with your mac desktop apps do they? Those phones dont have the freakin safari web browser.

You complain about missing features. When they're finally added or even
Planned for addition, you still complain as if you've lost time that you could of had with that feature. get a grip people

Copy and paste useless???

Copy and paste is hardly unnecessary.....

Seriously, it's not like EVERYONE is going to use it but just about everyone will find a way to do so thus making it useful.

There are MANY times where I wish I could just copy some info from a text, email or site and paste it to an appointment.

For example:
Text: "Hey meet us at the Matt's house"
Respond: "Where is it?"
Text Back: "123 South street"
Copy and past it to Google maps.....

I constantly get emails and texts with info like this, phone numbers and web addresses that, for some reason (sometimes input error) do not show up as clickable links, that I wish I could copy and paste.

In addition, it would be great to use this for apps like ReQall, and Jott so I don't have to type in lists that were sent to me or wait for them to be (sometimes incorrectly) translated from voice to text.

Seriously.....unnecessary??? Am I missing something?

Errr so they patent it, and I bet it gets copied by just about everyone out there.

As many other posters have already said, there's absolutely nothing new about this: Virtually every other smartphone already has this functionality (even Windows Mobile with their Today screen). I really don't see how Apple can be granted this patent: There's far too much prior art out there...

You know, other phones now have bigger, higher resolution screens with better browsers, and they have all the other missing features like MMS and cut and paste also. They also sync with 90% of the computers out there.

Why is everyone saying this is a new "intelliscreen" like feature? No data is being shown on the screen that isn't already being shown on it right now. If you receive a text, a voicemail, miss a phone call...they *already* show up on the lock screen! Nothing new for the iPhone. The new part is where you can now click the message to be taken directly there. Which I think is a horrible idea, because anything that skips the unlocking process is just dumb. And if you have to unlock anyways, then what does this save you? The home screen already highlights the icons for those things.

Well you could use copy and paste for that but a much better solution would be a data detector that recognises an address in an email or sms and will take you straight to the map application when you click it. No need for copy and paste. Copy and Paste is so 1995 especially on device like the iPhone. Sort of like having scoll bars and menus. I suppose it's ok as a last resort but in all the time I've owned my iPhone I have never once missed copy and paste.

Oooo...this sounds like a fantastic idea. I can't wait to see what actually comes out of this. :D

You do know that they can't build "data detectors" for everything. Also, I'm tired of arguing why MMS should be in there b/c honestly NO ONE has provided a good reason on why it shouldn't be in there. MMS (and copy/paste) *NEEDS* to be in the iPhone. Sorry, the e-mail solution is merely a hack workaround. Why? Because it doesn't work with every network carrier. Also, telling all your friends just to use send MMS to your e-mail address is *highly* unrealistic.

I know copy and paste will eventually come to the iPhone. I'm 100% certain of it. However, those of you saying that's entirely unnecessary are really not thinking it through. I know the moment Apple puts in Copy & paste into the iPhone, the same people who were "pooh-poohing" Copy and Paste will be FIRST in line saying: I CAN'T BELIEVE I LIVED WITHOUT COPY and PASTE!!!

I guarantee it.

so you think the iPhone needs to be bigger, run windows mobile and sync with outlook express to be competitive? there have been tons of phones out there before the iPhone and after, that can do all of the features that everyone says 'has to be on a phone in order to be worth purchasing' yet the iPhone is still selling like crazy.

fact is that there will always be consumers (when during this economic climate we really shouldn't be spending as much) and they will always buy what they want to buy. just cause the nokiaN1995 and the soulja boy or iron man edition-htc touch diamond can make a :) when you text someone doesn't mean people care.

so you think the iPhone needs to be bigger.

Why would it be bigger? The Touch HD is smaller than the iPhone, but with a bigger, higher resolution screen, removable battery and 5 megapixel auto-focus camera.

Surely Apple engineers can take time out of copying the Windows Mobile today screen to make the iPhone hardware better also?

I know copy and paste will eventually come to the iPhone.

I'm sure it will. The trouble is it's quite a difficult engineering problem requiring a considerable UI change. For example, copying a street address from a web page into a contact: at the moment there's no 'wipe' gesture in the browser (the screen scrolls when you "click & drag"). With normal applications, such as preview, there's an additional icon to switch between text select and screen scrolling. Obviously this isn't available on the iPhone due to the restricted space.

It's the same for most other applications as even in text editing mode there's no way to select text (the magnifying glass exists only to place the cursor within the text).

As I understand it, this patent was filed a year ago. Intelliscreen was released in May.

EDIT: Yeah, sounds like the patent was filed in June of 2007. Intelliscreen was released in May 2008.

The UPGRADE to intelliscreen 2.1 came out in May. Intelliscreen has been out since the original iphone was jailbroken. Much more than a year ago, I believe.

I wonder who's number that is??
It's a landline number in San Jose, CA.

you noted that the iPhone needed to have a bigger screen. thus making it bigger. i never said it was smaller than the HTC touch. and that still doesn't matter. people will buy what they want. but just because the iPhone doesn't have an 8 megapixel camera and direct access to xbox live doesn't make it an inferior phone. and the removable battery excuse has really been done to death. there are accessories that are specially made to fit the iPhone that can recharge the battery while allowing you to continue to use it.

Eh? This feature would be worse than that. It not only prints the message on the screen, but lets you click that message to be taken straight there, without having to unlock the iPhone! Terrible, terrible idea!

Actually, I think it would be pretty easy to do it this way:

Click on the desired notification (SMS, Voicemail, etc.) THEN the "Slide to Unlock" feature appears. After unlocking, then you would be taken directly to that feature. Pretty simple.

But actually I think it doesn't have to be one or the other (general unlocking VS going directly to a particular notification). Why can't you have the option of something like this:

3 different notifications appear on the main screen: a SMS message, a calendar event and a voicemail plus the general "Slide to Unlock" feature below them. Let's say you want to view that particular calendar event that appears on the main screen. For viewing this feature on the main screen, you have to do a fast double or triple-click to view it ( or something similar to avoid hitting it by mistake). Then, if your passcode time has expired, you will be required to enter your 4 digit passcode as usual. THEN you will be taken to that event directly.
