Personally, I don't really care to see that much info on the locked homescreen. I'd just rather a small icon (for each type) for new vmail, email, text message, and calendar event, and that's it. I just need to know that I got a new message (or whatever), but I personally don't need the specifics.

A good example is how the Sidekick does this, they just put little icons for each on the upper right hand corner of the lock screen.

Some people may want more info, but I just want to know if I have a new SMS, email, vmail, and/or event. If I want to know the specifics, I can then unlock the phone and go to that specific app. To each their own.

Seriously, Apple gotta start hiring some better iPhone software engineers, they're behind! And QUICK!

My Blackberry counterparts all have GChat clients which have background chat notifications, so they're online 24/7 as long as their phone is on.

In any case, having these quick-view buttons or sliders sort of defeat the purpose of having the lock screen to begin with. The main reason for the lock screen is so that you wouldn't accidentally touch/push other apps. Other phones require a combination of keys to be physically pushed in order to get to the main/home screen. But since the iPhone doesn't really have that ability, may I propose that they make the double-press of the home when in the lock screen to jump to a "Today" or sub-menu of some kind.

Why not just have the notifications on the lockscreen and make them selectable? You can't interact with them you can simply select them. Once they're selected you can slide to unlock and then it opens to whatever app corresponds to that item selected. That's what I want. I can't wait until this is implemented. I really need my iCal events for the fay displayed so I can see them easier. And of course once push notifications are implemented this will be great for apps like Twitterific Premium and Twinkle as well as AIM.

Very Useful Feature

I've got a BB that uses Pocketday that gives me a summary of calendar, missed calls, weather and the such. Very handy when you don't have to dig through applications or menus to get the vitals.

Find it funny that everyone is screaming stolen ideas, yep the idea is obvious, yep the idea has been done a thousand times already.

But what happens if apple doesn't apply for Patents, especially the stoopid defensive ones like this. A rejected patent as good a defense from submarine patents as a granted one. Not that the patent office rejects many patents (which is where the problem comes from).

Ok back to the maybe features.
Good interesting, but why do i have to even power up the backlight to find out if there is a message or even the time. Does it really take that much power to show time and date, and a user selectable set of info in just grey on grey.

I'll quote myself here so I can add what I was trying to get at with the first post. Apple is doing what they need to do to compete with other Smartphones/PDA's.

I'm blown away by the iPhone, but for me it is not yet got the BB off my hip. I bought an IPT so I could experience some of those fabulous iPhone muliti-media functions. Of course the WWW browsing is better on the iPhone/IPT. The "At a Glance" notification will make the iPhone even better.

I am an Apple fan boy, but I'm not afraid to give credit to non-Apple technology.

Yeah! Loving it......hope they make something nice of it....:apple:
Would make it more of a smartphone for me, and would justify even more so me not buying one of those ugly but very handy Blackberry's....

Why is everyone saying this is a new "intelliscreen" like feature? No data is being shown on the screen that isn't already being shown on it right now. If you receive a text, a voicemail, miss a phone call...they *already* show up on the lock screen! Nothing new for the iPhone. The new part is where you can now click the message to be taken directly there. Which I think is a horrible idea, because anything that skips the unlocking process is just dumb. And if you have to unlock anyways, then what does this save you? The home screen already highlights the icons for those things.

Way to totally miss the point, fella.

The point of this screen is that at the moment if I'm busy and I have my phone on silent or something and I don't feel it vibrate in my pocket for whatever reason, I'll be periodically getting it out, activating the screen, sliding the unlock, entering my code and then checking the 4 icons at the bottom of the screen just to see if I've got any mail, SMSs or missed calls/voicemails.

This system, like the Blackberry and like many other phones like it, would allow me to simply wake the display once and if I've had any of the above communications an icon will be displayed, saving me the effort of having to do the whole unlock thing just to check in vain.

I doubt they'll go ahead and make it so that touching the notification on this status screen will bypass the unlock - after all, Jobs was so proud of how difficult it is to unlock the phone in your pocket, whereas this would completely bypass that. But just having an icon letting you know you've had a communication would be a big help and I'm looking forward to it arriving (as it blatantly will at some point - soon, hopefully).

One other thing that bugs me is having it remind me every 5 minutes I've got an SMS unread. Maybe I can't get to my phone - maybe I'm in a meeting and want to give my colleagues my full attention? Maybe I've got a heavy TV camera on my shoulder and we're filming and I can't go and check the SMS - once is enough, thanks!

ugh, major pia. I just got an iPhone, mostly because it was the best option I had, no service coverage on gphone for tmobile where I need it, and this whole unlock crap to check my status is nuts! This should have been a day one feature.
