You, and others, are making the assumption that Jobs was talking about a few years for this transition, when in fact his examples cover about a hundred years. Care to speculate on the likelihood of desktop PCs in a 100 years? Jobs will be 100% correct in his vision, and even in the next 20 years the tablet will evolve to a form factor not easily imagined right now.

well, Walt asked him if he thought it would be in 1 year or 5 or 10...

he answered... who knows?

when pressed with ...yes but you don't think it will be next year do you?

he again answered who knows

he also stated they have...lots of goals for the iPad.

so, don't be like the other guy earlier in the thread who has zero vision and try to join the dots.... and add in the billion dollar server farm in NC!

;)

As the only thing really differing in the two OSs is the human interface layer, it is fair to unite the system under one name.

But why iOS?

Lets make a list of much better names for such a system. Remember that the apple logo was taken from the center to the left again during the transition from 10.0 to 10.1 due to tons of user requests? Maybe we are able to get a nice name which everybody recognizes instantly. My list:

- Kitty (after all those cats)
- EROS (because we love it so much. Nah, I don't think this will work)
- ISA (iSystem of Apple)
- LISA (Lovable ISA, yeah, I know, this one is already taken)
- Xi (the wonderful curvy greek letter. Combines the X and the i)
- Ida (iDevices from Apple)
- Daria (From Darwin, but somehow changed to female. I just like that name)
- ...

My favourite is Xi.

*os

It doesn’t have to be all “iOS”, but perhaps “Mac OS X” – I believe that had been announced to be rebranded as simply “OS X” once, a few years back – will become “xOS” or “mOS” or something akin to that.

Maybe they’ll incorporate more pronouns. iDevices are for use by one person, OS X Desktop for several, OS X Server for many. MobileMe is for active use by one person, but can be accessed by others thus i -> me and not “iDisk” any more. Therefore we have “uOS”, “hesheitOS” (sounds almost like “shitOS” alias “WindOS” …), “weOS” (misspeltly taken by Nintendo’s Wii), another “uOS” which we might call “yOS” to differentiate (and Y comes after X), finally “theyOS” (“zOS”?). “uOS” looks a bit like “µOS” to ASCII-challenged scientists and actually the Greek letter mu isn’t that far from “my” or “me”, but I think there’s an embedded Linux or Unix of that name already and the possessive “my” is very µsoft. Anyhow, possessive pronouns give, for second person and up, “urOS” (€s?), “hisOS”, “herOS”, “itsOS”, “ourOS”/“rOS”, another “yourOS”, “theirOS”. And there’s of course a version for the educational domain, “eOS”, but it’ll be abandoned soon after, because people confuse it with Asus’ “eeeOS”. “OS E” could be code for “OS Eleven”, though.

Perhaps OS X discovers its European origins other than Scottish ones: Irish “O’OS”, Dutch “Van OS”, German “Von OS”, Romance “d’OS” / “Da OS” / “Di OS” / “De OS” / “Del OS” / “Dell’OS” (!) etc. (Hollywood versions remove the space before the ‘O’.)

OTOH they could just mix the current style for Mac OS Eleven, which could be “xiOS” or “OS Xi”.

“mOS” and “rOS” play better with “BeOS”/“bOS” and “sOS”.

Project “kOS” as you see. As long as there is “aOS” for Apple desktop computers all will be fine.

Perhaps someone will notice that today’s users don’t need a mere “operating system” but an “experience platform” – “iXP”.

PS: App Store for OS X is coming, but for the distribution (fare), not for the control. Strangely they let Steam get there first.

What do todays operating systems do that is too hard for people?! You manage files, you install programs, you work, or play games etc. It's dead easy! My grandfather, who is in his eighties just got a Windows 7 computer and loves it.

Computers are not hard. This is marketing spiel for "buy our dumbed down product." Remember I buy all of this stuff too. My iPhone is sitting right here, I have an iPad and I work on OSX. I'm not against these devices per se.

If desktop OSes mostly go away, what will people be working on? Accountants? Engineers? Researchers? Programmers? Editors? Designers? This is all just frivolous stuff or what? The last time I checked, people who were actually productive are the ones making the Earth "go 'round". Apple is pushing a vision of constant entertainment consumption, and minimizing how important productivity is in every respect.

I can fully believe in the future our desktop machines could basically be something like 5mm thick iMac style machines with perfect screens, massive storage, and incredibly powerful cpu/gpu etc etc. Whatever. That's not the issue. The issue is Apple removing capability from an OS and pushing it as the future. Nothing iOS does is all that special. It's a compromise to run a decent OS on a small device. That's it.

Remember, OSX is still around 5% worldwide share. If they abandon pro users, then the entire ecosystem dries up and vanishes. Why? Because you need a decent machine to make apps for their toys! Certainly MS will keep pushing productivity and cost effectiveness. Apple is pushing high prices, and form way, way over function.

Something, at some point, has to give.
Touché.

Apple ain't deciding my future. I currently use Mac OS X because i like it, it's better than Windows and I like its workflow (as well as I like Ubuntu's workflow too); and I use iOS 4 on my iPhone 3GS because I have to... not because I want to... hence... I jailbreak it to improve that functionality that Apple thinks ain't good for me.

The day that Apple turns the mac computing platform into an ios-based (aka... your description...), I will stop using it. I don't want to be told what apps I am allowed to run neither I need to help a company increase its annual profit, if I want to code an app for myself, I will do it, and I will approve it and sell however I want if I consider selling it... but...

I am sorry, but this is the beginning of the end, even if Apple doesn't change the name, what's important here is that the idea is there... and I am sure is not an idea from yesterday...
Apple has (lately) focused its efforts on its iProducts... and that's a fact... the mac platform is updated regularly but it seems Apple doesn't care anymore...

And what stops you from coding for yourself on the App Store? Apple approves 95% of the App's. As to most of the other 5%--they're blocked to protect the consumers privacy, YOU. Granted the iOS is limited but it's a good tradeoff. Don't you think?

If this is what they plan on calling Mac OS X 10.7 I say bad idea.
If it is the new name for Mac OS XI I say go for it.

Like It

Mac OS X is not dead or dying. Where do people get that idea from a name change? Is iTunes dead when they finally change the name to something that matches what iTunes does (not just music).

iOS is a good name. Much more marketable than Mac OS X. It's an operating system. Only certain people really care about the operating system. Most users care about the applications anyway.

What do you think a developer wants to be called?

1. An iOS developer but not a Mac OS X developer?
2. A Mac OS X developer who may not develop for iPhone?
3. An iOS developer which could mean a developer of any Apple device.

I want to be an iOS developer. It's one word and will also be easier to find on Google than putting Mac OS X or Mac OS 10.6 or Leopard or Tiger? Just search using iOS version number. Much easier.

iPod shuffle
iPod nano

iPod
iPod touch
iPhone
iPad
iMacBook

iMacBook Air
iMacBook Pro
iMac mini
iMac

iMac Pro
iMac Serve

there, I fixed it ... quite literally.

Fixed to show only the items that Apple cares about. ;)

Sometimes they are blocked for being indecent, like a swimsuit store app being blocked while a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit App is not, or for making fun of public figures, or banning a NIN app for objectionable material, the same objectionable material available in songs on the iTunes store.

God bless Apple's beautiful hardware, but to hell with their ridiculous app store policies.

"according to some developers, getting an iPhone app approved is not entirely dissimilar to having a sensible chat with someone at the DMV.
Even when you are given reasons, they say, those reasons sometimes embrace logic like a fish embraces sand."
Link.

I don't see this as a good move for Apple. They should keep their Mac and iDevices as 2 separate lines of products And remove the i from iMac, as it's a Mac not an iDevice.

Nah. Even if the next iteration of MacOS has an iOS compatibility layer, I can't see it adopting the name. The move from iPhone OS to iOS was smart. Calling two radically different things "iOS" would be terribly confusing.

Yep. they dropped the 'phone' because that OS is used on the touch and ipad as well.
iOS is not used on the Mac computers.

the two are linked but also different thus iOS and MacOS is the way it will likely go

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Because of a name change? Get a grip. They want a common name that will link the popular iPhone and iPod to re Mac. It's a way of encouraging mobile device owners to become Mac owners.

But then why did they change the iBook to Macbook?

Keep the names unique.

It makes sense for the iPhone OS to be renamed iOS since it isn't just for an iPhone anymore, but moving that to the desktop arena sounds silly. Ok, I'm going to plug my iPod into my iMac running the iOS so I can synch it to my iTunes.

OS X sounds and looks better in print. Using iOS would cause confusion too. Just look at Microsoft with their Windows Phone 7 fiasco. Laughable.

As long an Adobe can put Photoshop on it then they can do whatever they want. But if Apple hinders my workflow then I am switching designing platforms. I love Apple but not all designers can afford to get a Mac Pro. I have not even graduated yet lol! I need OSX, I need the Unix backbone to it that lets me use some of the great programs I use.

OS X and iOS4 under the same name???

I dont really care how they re-name Mac OSX or iPhone OS4, it really doesnt matter, as long as Apple realizes where their roots are. It does concern me tho they havent updated the MAC PRO line yet. I sure hope they dont abandon the many Professionals that use the Mac Pro lineup. Thats how and why i became a MAC user in the first place, yeah the iPhone and iPad are fun little devices, but for computer power users, they are just toys. But i think ol Steve-O will come thru on the MAC Pro side soon, and with some pretty cool stuff. It would be cool to have a Mac Pro Touch.

This does not mean the end of Mac OS X. And for the record, I HATE the idea of getting rid of the Mac OS X name and replacing it with iOS. I do not like that name at all!

Because Steve Jobs wants to stamp "I" on everything?

iSuggest

iOS-X i-and-i Lion
(thought first of Sabertooth, but I had doubts about naming an operating system after an extinct species.:p)

Hey nerdy nerd-nerds. (Yeah. You too!)

Apple knows this community exists. The powerful OSX we know isn't going to just disappear. Think big. Its an evolution not a revolution in the operating system of the Apple world.

Relax. Oh. And its just a rumor :(

:apple:

These macs serve a huge purpose and aren't going to turn into big iPads overnight.

Remember. We all like Apple for all the hundreds of things they've done for us, and the technology industry. They aren't just gonna change things overnight. I don't know about you, but I don't quite get how amazing the OSX name is. Cause OSX means 10.1 and 10.2. and 10.3. or Snow Leopard. Or Tiger. It's kind of not the awesome.... So imagine the next OS launch that blows everyones minds away. And then they call is 10.7. Is that really a good idea? Or perhaps iOS desktop would blow people away more.....

-The dude who can't handle seeing 700+ "negatives" on such a lame rumor

you guys seriously can't sit there, shocked that this was not coming.

it was inevitable.
