They could make it free. There its already better than paypal. I sold a laptop on ebay for $800 and the fees were $30 for paypal and $30 from ebay. Thats $60 to one company for doing nothing!

Doing nothing? They did after all host your auction and provide a means for payment.

You could have used cash and craigslist.

Yeah but when the money is in one large sum the fees are much higher.

It was 3 purchases.

Paypal is not just for Ebay anymore. Unlike Skype, Ebay put a lot of work into Paypal and a lot of websites take it as a form of payment other than credit cards. if you don't want to use a debit card online, it's an easy way to buy stuff using cash online

This would be genuine nightmare given the way Apple back-side interface for payments and other account stuff (iTunesConnect) looks and works. After SAP's web software, probably the worst piece of crap I have ever seen at such major company.

To SAP's benefit, I never expected them to do anything good. Unlike Apple where I expect top-notch.

Not to mention that online retailer with email as the *only* means of contact would be a joke. Apple would need tectonic shift in their behavior towards small 3rd party partners (see how they treat developers) to make that work.

maybe MacRumors will start using iTunes for users to contribute.

srsly. all i get from people are iTunes cards, not like little Visa Gift cards ever so I can contribute to MR.

I love paypal and everything but I just think it could be a little cheaper. And yes the $60 came from $30 to ebay and $30 to paypal.

PayPal is free. PayPay is the easiest way to accept credit cards/bank accounts without owning a credit card terminal machine/service. PayPal is CHEAP compared to a terminal. It is impossible to make any sort of service free that accepts credit cards because credit card companies charge rates for every transaction. You will never ever see a COMPLETELY free transaction service. The only thing that is COMPLETELY FREE on PayPal is sending money to friends/family, which is a great feature.

For a $800 sale that is impossible. I sold my MacBook on eBay last year for $1009.68 and the transaction rate was $29.58.

So what if this isn't for something as broad as paypal, but just for apps. Think of all the e-book readers available for the iPhone right now; each purchase goes through the vender's system.

Now, what if Apple were to create an iTunes system that allows me to use my iTunes account instead of giving amazon/barnes & noble my credit card info.

That makes it easier for the customer, who buys more, and everyone wins.

Apple should do what Paypal did to get people to join when Paypal started... free $20 deposit in new accounts :D. I never did use my $20 and ended up losing it to fees or something. Hardly anyone accepted Paypal payments back then. X.com, who started Paypal, even gave members a debit card that could be used at ATMs.

This would make sense if they decide to build an app store for the mac tablet. Use your itunes account to purchase software from third parties, or buy books from Amazon / BnN. Just a guess...

This makes no logical sense. Why do they accept PayPal for iTunes purchases then??

It doesn't seem like the kind of market Apple would enter. I would expect an Apple Cellular network before we see this come into play.

idea: Maybe Apple is planning to add OS X app. downloads to iTunes, like they did iPhone/iPod Apps? Maybe Apple is looking to extend its model to 3rd Party OS X app developers?

I really like this idea. One account for everything. The question is, how will other companies actually adopt and use iTunes for purchasing non-iTunes content.

Does Quality Suffer When Companies Expand?

I have used Apple computers/OS since 1989. They always "just worked" and that to me justified the "premium".

However, in the last 5 years I have seen a falloff in quality as the company expands. This was inevitable as core engineering personnel are dispersed to headup new product designs and Apple becomes "jack of all trades" while still trying to keep from being "master of none". A fine line to be sure.

It seems like they are just trying to do too much too fast. Hence, I hope this PayPal thing is not true.

I hope that Apple recognizes that quality has slipped (both in HW and SW...just look at the Support forums for lots of examples) and take steps to make everything "just work" again. It needs to be rebuilt into the culture now that they have hired a bunch of new people from companies where quality is not a concern (e.g. MS).

The slogan "it just works" is starting to sound more like a slogan from "yesteryear" than something that applies today.

Don't get me wrong. I love Apple and Macs. Apple just needs to realize this and "tighten up" their QC and internal testing BEFORE products are released to market. Else, they end up no better than MS.

Apple's had iTunes payments going for a long while, and now they're used for the AppStore. So yeah, they could have sat around in a brainstorming session on how to make more money, and come up with this.

But isn't this a bit like Microsoft getting into the search business, where they really had no reason to go?

I would prefer that Apple sticks to making great computers and great software.

Apple doesn't just make "computers and software" ;)

This is not a business model that suits Apple and it doesn't really make sense. iTunes accounts are very specifically for itunes and buying content there. Why would Apple allow people to spend their money on a 3rd party website rather than in Apples own store?

Why would apple go from power PC to Intel? Why would they go from hard drive based ipods to flash base?

Best post so far.

That's just silly. Apple doesn't want to be a bank.

Pure BS.

Are you apple? No, Apple will do what ever they want, and once they do, those who are scraming NO NO NO! to this, will be the first ones to use the service.

People said the same thing about the switch to Intel. now look. (minus the few who are still hurt over the switch that happen 6 years ago)

I've been using ebay & paypal since the day they started.

Ebay is great, paypal is a necessary evil. I now factor in a 30% loss rate due to Paypals ineffectiveness. By the time you're done with paying all the fees for an auction, eBay/Paypal typically take 10%. The other 20% is due to the million or so easy ways to scam or rip someone off using the service. After looking at our totals over the last 5 years, it's only been getting worse.

Paypal needs a competitor in a big way. There are other services, but none would lend the weight an iTunes service would.
