"Virtue signaling." A phony term concocted by people without the ability to feel empathy for other human beings and to whom being shown examples of simple human decency elicits a strong negative emotion whereby they label such demonstrations of humanity as "weakness." In more simple terms, since they have no ability to feel or demonstrate decency, they assume those who do are faking it to make them look bad.

You don't need to close the store because of a spike in cases. We're testing a lot more so obviously there will be more cases discovered. Deaths are going down.

And besides, we were TOLD that masks and social distancing WORKS. Letting people in so it doesn't get crowded is OK. Apple already has an appointment system, just hand out less appointments. I can go to the gym on appointment system, Apple should be able to do the same.

Apple can also educate more people on personal hygiene methods, that visit their stores.

Makes no sense.

We're testing more and the precent positive is still increasing-- that indicates that the spike in cases is real. We don't have perfect data, but that's the best interpretation of what we have.

We were told masks and social distancing helped. It's pretty clear that whatever we're doing in some places, it isn't working well enough. It'll be at least a month before the recent surge in cases really registers in the mortality statistics. I suspect that if we're able to keep the number of deaths under control, it will be seen as a sign that we've significantly advanced our ability to treat the disease and things will start to reopen again.

At this point, we have no reason to believe the hospitalization and death rates will continue to decline, and a month of exponential growth would be a huge risk, so caution rules the day. This is the same thing that happened in March-- private employers started reacting before governments.

The rate of increase in new cases far exceeds the rate of increase in testing.
The percentage of tests which turn out positive has jumped a lot.
Hospitalizations are increasing.
Deaths lag new cases by weeks, especially now that there is more testing so earlier cases are being caught.

So you are wrong.

More recently I've seen it in the UK (not often though). But generally speaking if you said to to someone in the UK the store was shuttered we'd understand it, but we'd probably pause for a moment to compose ourselves.
Just for context: I’ve lived in NYC for >20 years.

If you said to me that “the store was shuttered,” it would mean to me that they had gone out of business. It might mean more, that it had been shut down by process of law (implying that it was a shady joint, like a bar where drugs were sold or something like that.) Regardless, “shuttered” ain’t good.

One of the best replies I've read so far, thanks.

Florida just saw a spike of 9,000 cases *in a single day.* Ok, so the majority will survive but that doesn't mean that many of the survivors will ever be the same physically after recovering. The seasonal Flu does not devastate the body and turn one's lungs into the consistency of dry marshmallow requiring intubation at ridiculously high air pressures to get oxygen to the body. 130,000 Americans died *in the course of a few months.* Imagine what that number is going to be in a year if this idiotic attitude of "I'm going to do nothing to help myself or others* remains prevalent.

19 years ago we cried for weeks over the deaths of 3,000 people. 19 years later the deaths of 130,000 "is just a number." I had this argument with someone else who insisted you don't mourn people who died from an illness; only those killed by a hated enemy are worthy of national mourning...

That says it all, doesn't it? Most of those who refuse to wear a mask fall under that cherry picking category. Just like someone mentioned above (probably you) on how those who open carry are advising us to not live in fear ... if only they were smart enough to see the irony in it.

I don't care. Wear a mask, look ridiculous. Makes no difference to me.

Oh! Don't get me wrong. I couldn't care less about what you care.

In fact for you and those like you I'd say ... Apple can do what it wants. If you don't like it take your business elsewhere. I dare you!

Irony, metaphor, simile, analogy...nah, they never seem to get these concepts and they fail miserably when they try to use them, especially when they say something really stupid (usually something with racial overtones) and claim they were using a "metaphor", which leads us to hyperbole - the one they unintentionally excel at.

Reopening Vegas and not requiring masks worked out well.

The management -or rather the lack it- of the Corona crisis in the US has been a complete disaster and sadly, so many people have lost and more will lose their lives or will suffer from long term health issues. And so many families will be dragged into a financial crisis.

I hope the person in charge will have to face justice one day in court for his actions.

Ate people going to, or have they in the past, lost their lives because of lack of medical facilities required to treat CV19 patients?

Flattening the curve was, after all, the WHOLE idea of masks and sheltering in place. The idea was never to stop the virus dead in its tracks which is an impossibility without a vaccine in the modern world.

So unless people were dropping like flies due to no facilities to treat the virus, which is going to eventually adhere to every living person, your disdain for “management” really has no weight.

People lost their lives because their government did not implement the preventive measurements right from the start. It was for outsiders really mind boggling to see some statements of certain persons during the begin of the crisis. Most of knew and some media predicted correctly that the idiocy will cost thousands of lives. Too much valuable time was lost in the beginning.

Other countries and regions, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, etc, informed the people early and asked the people to be disciplined and united in the fight against a virus. In those regions life is almost back to normal, with hardly if not none locally transmitted cases. And Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities of the world where most people rely on public transport.

USA seems unable to do that. Just like Brasil. The problem is: those countries are ruled by utterly incompetent and populistic leaders. Spouting or twittering moronic statements, which are dividing the country instead of bringing people together and that's why USA is now the Corona Hotspot of the world.

So yes, your country is completely mismanaged. It's sad. A once great country has health care management abilities of a third world country.

The first recorded case outside of China was in Thailand (where I live), in mid January.

We had a fairly tight, enforced curfew (yes an actual lockdown not, "hey please stay home if you can" "lockdown" so many seem to be moaning about in the west) from the beginning of April until a few weeks ago, the vast majority wear masks (albeit some wearing them completely incorrectly - on their head, under their chin, etc), shops essentially won't allow anyone in without a mask.

It's been over a month since the last local transmission case - the ones since then are Thai citizens returning from other countries, all of whom are required to quarantine upon return.

I'm not saying it's "defeated", but the situation is without a doubt under control here, and the situation in the US could be infinitely better than it is, if the response had been better.

There is going to be a reckoning and it will last years. It will last as long as it takes to clean up the damage. How we repair our relationships with our (former) Allies I don't have a clue. I've lived in Germany since 2011 and the change in attitude toward the US and Americans in 9 years is heartbreaking. The supporters of that person in charge are oblivious thanks to a particular news source. They honestly think that person is "loved" and the US has never enjoyed so much respect and that somehow we were a "laughing stock" prior.

Or... those who are compromised should know better to take care of themselves, instead of 98% of the population pausing and destroy futures for. Average age of a covid death is greater than life expectancy itself. No grandpa would ever ask to save his life over his children or grandchildren's future for him. People should take their own responsibility.

Your perspective, like all the other fatalists, is not only to cherry-pick the data and forget about all the young and middle-aged world-wide who have perished but to use a percentage instead of realizing just how many people even 1% of the world's population actually is.

Most of Europe and Asia-Pac are climbing out of this disaster because Germans and Austrians and Italians and the French and the Spanish, for the most part, gave a crap about one another and followed lock-down rules, wore masks, and practiced social distancing after a slow start taking action and may very well avoid a second wave of the disease. Then we have The US, the UK, Sweden, and Brazil who are already experiencing a second wave because a bunch of jerks decided that wearing masks was too much of an inconvenience and violation of their "Rights." Their horribly naive ideas about individuality and personal freedoms was a big F.U. to their fellow human beings.

Who are you to speak for the elderly and the relative value of their lives? What child would ask his parent or grandparent to voluntarily sacrifice their lives for them in some exercise of social Darwinism? More importantly, please tell us which members of YOUR family are you willing to sacrifice and if you are willing to put yourself in someone else's place and *sacrifice yourself.*

Only in the US are people sacrificing their "futures" because Conservatives seem to think giving millions of taxpayer dollars away to those who are already unfathomably wealthy is "Capitalism" ("good") but giving money to sustain people who should not be working because their jobs aren't essential is "Socialism" ("bad"). Do you know why BILLIONAIRES need bail-out money? Because they operate Billion Dollar businesses that teeter on the brink of disaster on a monthly basis because, despite their claims that CEO and executive wages come from interest earned on money in the bank, they don't really have any money in the bank. The millions they pay-out on a monthly basis in executive compensation is an obscenity and simply isn't sustainable long-term. We tell people no matter how much they earn they should be saving back at least 6 months to a year's wages to weather an economic downturn but Billionaires aren't held to the same standard. Billionaires aren't expected to reinvest their money into their businesses to weather economic downturns. That's what bank loans and paying a month or more's executive and CEO wages and Board Member's dividends off the taxpayers' backs with bail-outs is for.

Whats wrong and whats right?

Deaths are still down.

Hospitals are incentivized by government to report all cases of death as caused by corona because they get reimbursed more for corona patients vs. normal death patients. A very good way for the hospitals to stay afloat since governments are stopping them from earning money in elective surgeries.

No, they're not. That's a myth pushed by the likes of a certain entertainment network. Hospitals are NOT "incentivized" to report deaths as caused by COVID-19. Hospitals are reimbursed by insurance companies and patients, not "the Government." Do you really believe that health care professionals - doctors and nurses specifically - are that immoral and unethical to tell you your loved one died of COVID when they did not? Doctors would have their licenses pulled for reporting in that manner. It's utter garbage pushed by COVID deniers. Medicare may reimburse specifically for patients intubated and placed on a ventilator up to $39,000.00. No hospital is intubating patients who don't require it or specifically due to COVID as there just aren't enough working ventilators to go around and most patients aren't even covered by Medicare. Part of this myth is based on the belief that only "old people with existing underlying conditions" suffer the worst effects of COVID.

For all those nay sayers saying:

Show a chart that actually matters. The number of cases mean nothing. Deaths have been going down and down even with these spikes in cases.

View attachment 927649

There is a lag between the number of cases and number of deaths. Not unexpected.

Now the nightmare is coming true.

yep. please do ask Sweden. they admit they made a mistake by NOT locking down.

No they didn’t Admit that.

I also see a lot of misinformation circulating that herd immunity has ever been a part of the Swedish strategy. The Swedish strategy has always been about flattening the the curve.
