And that's really a forced obsolescence. There is nothing in iOS 7 that is required by a tablet. And for a lot of businesses, there is no need to add iOS 7 dependent software.

Tablets are closer to PC's than phone's. In the world of business and education, there isn't a need to have the latest/greatest every 1-2 years. Companies and schools would be foolish to get on an 18-24 month upgrade treadmill if they don't need to.

The iPad 2 can continue to be workhorse for the next 2-3 years. And I wouldn't be surprised if Apple eventually markets the current 'Air' as a long term model after 2-3 years.

I don't question that, but does Apple actually accommodate the needs of businesses and education with this? Every new iPad 2 will ship with iOS 7 and there is no way to downgrade, as far as I am aware. It would not be so much of a problem if Apple would have at least reduced the price, but they still market it as if it was last year's model.

So.......
The difference between a 4" iPhone screen and a HUGE 5.7" inch screen on the Note 3 is agreed to be VERY significant... but on a tablet an even greater difference is negligible?????

It's a smaller percent difference but still very significant.

Maybe they think that the iPad 2 is newer than the iPad. Or, more likely, it's from all the schools and businesses. Watch there be an iPad C.

----------

iPad Air: $100 more, same exact function for schools and businesses and certain people (since not everybody needs the retina display and faster hardware), maybe even worse if you want the 30-pin port.
Nexus 7: Sucks.
The Nexus 7, far from sucking, is a great tablet (and was last year as well). My family has both an iPad and 2012 N7, and I greatly prefer the N7.

I was just at the Apple store and it seems odd but there are some people who measure the quality of the item by the weigh it is. So the heavier; the better quality inside.

So, I can see how Apple could leave the iPad2 out and people will buy it despite it being close to 3 year old technology.

After talking with some other technology enthusiast; I may just wait till the next generation for an iPad. Big concern is the 802.11 ac along with 4GB or more of RAM.

I think Apple will do the iPad Mini Retina next year with weight reduction - thin film instead of glass like the iPad 5.

Agreed, the iOS 7 update really made my iPad 2 sluggish. It felt plenty zippy before. Engineered obsolescence?

No, it's called Object-Oriented Programming ;)
Wanna make a string? No, an array of bytes is too efficient for this. NSString for you!

same with my brother's iPad 2 (he came from iOS 6). however he did some research and came across some tweaks he could make in the settings and iOS 7 now runs just as good as iOS 6 did.

i expect the performance of A5 devices running iOS 7 to improve after the next few updates

My iPad 2 feels faster after upgrading it to iOS7, and battery life has been better than I remember it from before. It's still a capable device, and I've got quite a few hours out of one charge while playing Bloons TD 5.

I recommend trying to reinstall if anybody's got lag issues. That's one sad problem that crops up all the time, where some installations just don't seem to work right. It doesn't matter if it's an upgrade or a clean install :/

Wouldn't people buy the iPad 4 at $399 too, though?

I guess profit margins are better on the 2!

I completely agree, they should be offering the iPad 4 at that price. It would eliminate the 30 pin cable from the lineup, provide a more future proof device for users and reduce fragmentation for developers... and simplify the iPad lineup.

Clearly the bean counter mentality has taken hold at Apple in this instance. What happened to producing the best products and surprising and delighting it's users?

Wow why not do the same thing they do with every iPhone sell the old model not an outdated one

Becaused the 5s feels like a lightweight piece of junk, and the 5c (.7 oz heavier) feels like a quality device? I wouldn't touch a 5s.
Enjoy your plastic 5c.
Meanwhile, we'll enjoy our thin, light 5S made out of aluminium.

P.S. You should try a Samsung. I bet you'll like it.

Yeah he will with all that malware and our premium feel iPhone 5 or 5s we will keep enjoying them :)

Makes sense display-wise to provide some lower pricing, but they could at least update the processor to be current. :(

I have an iPad 2, when I upgraded to iOS 7 I did a clean install by plugging it into iTunes (after backing up anything I cared about via Dropbox or whatever). It runs just as fast as it did brand new. I don't experience any lag, pretty much ever. I recommend going that route, which puts you in the same boat as those buying it new. While I wouldn't buy it now, I can definitely see some people getting and loving it.

Ps: yes installing and restoring manually is time consuming and annoying, but it's totally worth it

heh heh, the bean counter is doing what a bean counter supposed to do, make a lot of money for Apple. But there may be a more interesting issue here. With all the Ipad and Iphone line up announced already, there is only one A6 based device and it is 5c. Everything else is either A7 or A5.. My bet is that they have problem with A6 production either they are building too many 5c or they have move up some of the production capacity to produce A7 (with a lot of change to new equipments). A5 looks to the minimal CPU that work in the low end of Apple line up. Since Apple only offer two tiers devices right now, there is no reason to move up the low end unless it has to just like Apple does not offer more dram than absolutely necessary for every device. Customer demand or competition can force Apple to upgrade their device.. Let's see if the sales figure will suffer or not before passing judgement..

Agreed..
My eyes are 20/20 (thank you LASIK surgery!)
Still, I see a HUGE diff between mini/full-size iPad.
Especially when reading books, PDFs, & comics.

I was surprised to learn that Apple was selling iPad 2 instead of previous gen along with iPad 4.

Now they keep selling along with iPad 5. And for only a 100$ less :confused:

Can't you get a 3 or 4 for lower price used or even sealed? lol

No one is saying they can't sell the iPad 2, but for $399? Shouldn't the iPad 4 or at least the iPad 3 have been shuffled to this slot instead? It's not like people wouldn't "still be buying" the iPad 4 or iPad 3 at that same price point.

Let's not pretend we don't know why Apple is still selling the iPad 2 for $399.

Same, but my eyes are 9000/9000 (not really). Uh, they're so bad that I'm nearsighted but have trouble seeing nearby things that farsighted people also have trouble with. If I remember correctly, I count as legally blind.

Yea that's too much for an iPad 2

Retina and non retina

I think it's to make money. Now there is full size and mini with retina and non for each.

I know people who shop price only. Meeting needs is a distant second. Some don't consider that at all.

Apple may as well have a pony in that race.

Goes without saying I am not referring to education or enterprise purchases.

I think, most of them don't know the difference, all they see is iPad cheaper and $100 less but have no idea it's 2 years old. >_<

I really don't see why anyone would buy iPad 2 when $100 more gets most recent one.
