The whole world is littered with stuff, only idiots want to buy. In fact, 90% percent of all products do make such an impression to me. iPad 2 is one of the more harmless examples.

If somebody now buys an $400 iPad 2 (with a $480 iPad Air and $230 Nexus 7 available), they're just an idiot. Don't try to justify it, that's just the way it is.

It's bigger than the mini. Some people don't see as well as you. They need stuff bigger. And the retina doesn't do much good if you don't see so well. :p

It's 1.8" bigger. I find it hilarious that people think that is such a huge difference. If you can't see on a 7.9" tablet then you won't be able to see on a 9.7" either.

Even if there is someone out there crazy enough who can see the difference why is Apple still selling it for $399?? Stop making excuses and just admit they are ripping people off.

that's because there's alot of people (many of whom never used a tablet) that don't know or care what kind of spec or capacity the device has ... they know they want Apple and just see a bunch of pricey similar devices doing the same thing (running same OS and apps) - so they just buy the cheapest!

unless you play games there is very little the Air does that the ipad 2 can't do

you don't need 64bit A7 to read a book, check email or listen to music or run most apps

So.......
The difference between a 4" iPhone screen and a HUGE 5.7" inch screen on the Note 3 is agreed to be VERY significant... but on a tablet an even greater difference is negligible?????

Anyone making a statement like that without any qualifications is an idiot. Go through this thread, plenty of people buying them for perfectly good reasons.

that's a completely stupid thing to say. students can make good use of those cameras and "educational" doesn't necessarily mean a school makes the purchase. I would rather spend $299 buying my 10yo an iPad 2 to use and take to school than a more expensive Air which is above what they would necessarily need. Why exclude some customers? Not very business smart.

I guarantee you most students would abuse the cameras. Stinks for the students who wouldn't however.

why would they still buy it with the iPad 3 and 4 on the market ?:confused:

I'm not sure why they would still buy it at this point, unless they are on a tight budget or want it for something like their kids and realize that kids break things.

I usually upgrade every other release, but I have an iPad 2 that I bought at launch and I still use it - it's a solid device. I don't consider myself a beginner when it comes to technology, but the only thing that I have experienced an issue with is games. Sure the display leaves something to be desired, but it's a great overall product.

Remember when Apple actually killed successful products if they didn't make sense in the lineup? Remember the iPod Mini?

Nowadays we have a company that sells 2-year-old iPads, last year's phone in new colors called the 5C (and a 2-year old 4S), and a MacBook Pro lineup that still has an option without a Retina display. All of that **** needs to die if they want to push things forward and have a unified lineup.

Kill everything non-Retina.
Kill any desktop or laptop with under 8 GB of RAM.

Yes... People still want a choice, not to go Retina, but still on a 9.7-inch display...

But at $399 ?? It's been out too long to stay at that price. Just goes to show, if people still want something, they'd pay anything for it.

No body should be paying $400 for a two and a half year old tablet. Especially when at the same price you could purchase a newly released Retina iPad Mini.

10 division with 25 employees all needed in run SalesForce and SingNow.
Thats $25,000 in savings over the iPad Air while being equally productive.

What is the advantage of spending $25,000 more again?
None you say?
Ok then....

And it is only ripping people off if someone decide to buy it ). Just because Apple price it at 399, does not mean customer will pay for it. Why are you getting so upset with the prospect that someone may decide to buy an Ipad 2 at 399 after all? There are plenty of overpriced products around us (jean, food, car, shirt etc. etc) and we don't get upset about them. Why would a highly price Ipad 2 generate so much raw emotion? If Apple priced it incorrectly, they will have to discount Ipad 2 later on to move them. Mr Market will speak and spank Apple if they are naughty and mis price their product.

I would agreed that a lot of retailer will drop the price down to 340 or so and use Ipad 2 as the door buster for Christmas selling season. Apple pay retailer anywhere between 10-15% for distributing their product. So if a retailer decide to forego their profit on the device, they are free to do so..

Last years model SHOULD be marked down to $399. People are buying a three year old tablet for only a hundred less because far too many are clueless. If Apple would not being so cheap people would clearly purchase an iPad 4 at the same cost of $399.

They seem to only be about the future if it drives profits up otherwise continue having three year old tech and slow hard drives as options.

The price of the iPad 2 should be embarrassing to them.

I know this is a geek site, where everything but the latest and greatest is crap and people are insane for not upgrading blah blah.

However:
The iPad 2 is absolutely wonderful for *most* people.
Myself included ;)

My old mum (79 years old) use hers every day, and i know many others who love their iPad 2.

I don't think that's the issue. The problem is Apple selling it for $399 when the iPad 4 should cost that much once the iPad Air is released. Can't imagine anything being wrong with still using an iPad 2 they bought awhile ago. If it works for them a lot of people would not upgrade until it dies or gets too slow.

If people want to get their hands on an iPad and specs are not of utmost importance, then of course there will be demand for a device like the iPad 2. It is the current entry model to the iPad ecosystem. That does not mean that there is a particular demand for the iPad 2, but rather demand for the cheapest iPad. If Apple would replace the iPad 2 with a newer model, then the demand would naturally be substituted.

That does not itself explain why Apple continues to market it and I think there are plenty of other and more convincing reasons than simply 'because customers are still buying it'. But the problem is that the iPad 2 is reaching obsolescence, according to some reports it seems to have gotten a lot closer to that point with the release of iOS 7. This effectively means that Apple is selling outdated hardware and I doubt that iOS 8 will support it at all. For such a hefty price tag, it seems to be very dishonest of Apple to do it.

And that's really a forced obsolescence. There is nothing in iOS 7 that is required by a tablet. And for a lot of businesses, there is no need to add iOS 7 dependent software.

Tablets are closer to PC's than phone's. In the world of business and education, there isn't a need to have the latest/greatest every 1-2 years. Companies and schools would be foolish to get on an 18-24 month upgrade treadmill if they don't need to.

The iPad 2 can continue to be workhorse for the next 2-3 years. And I wouldn't be surprised if Apple eventually markets the current 'Air' as a long term model after 2-3 years.

Ok then....

If it were priced better at say $349, then that's $37500 savings (or thereabouts).

The point is if they're going to sell a 2.5 year old device, it shouldn't cost only $100 less than when it came out.

The big question is: where is the iOS 7 militia? Going on about how everyone needs to be on 7 for Apple to move forward.. Isn't supporting 1024x768 is equal violation?

I'm still on iPad 1. I should have waited for 2. The 2nd generation of a new Apple device always puts the first to shame and outlives it by a large margin.

For what it's worth, I find text on the non-retina 9.7" to be considerably more straining on the eyes.

the A5 chip turned out to be like those 2 Mars rovers where they performed over and above the expected performance limits. now of course Apple could have done this on purpose, who knows. either way, the A5 is such a great chip that i would still have been using my iPhone 4S without issue. i only upgraded to the iPhone 5 so i could have LTE.

i don't think a new iPad 2 is worth $399 at all, but a refurb at $319 is a good bargain. however now the iPad 3 refurb is $359 and the iPad 4 refurb is $379. IMO, the best value you can get right now if you want an iPad is the iPad 4 16GB refurb wifi-only for $379. i said the same thing about the iPad 3 16GB wifi-only when it was $379, but now that it's only $20 less than the iPad 4 refurb, it makes much more sense to get the newer "4" version.

currently i am using an iPad 3, 64GB LTE that i bought as a refurb last year for $679. it has since dropped to $579. i have no put iOS 7 on it yet, nor do i have 6 either. i am still running iOS 5.1.1 since i have specific jailbreak apps that are not compatible with iOS 6 and they are productivity-related. my iPad runs very fast, no issues or any reason to upgrade at all. i do have my eye on that new iPad Mini with Retina though, that would be really neat. before i buy anything though, i would need to try the iPad Mini Retina in comparison with the iPad Air since now we're talking about a ~ 0.25 lb difference where as before it was ~0.75 lb difference with the old versions of each. i like the larger screen for movies but for reading digital newspapers, magazines, and books i like the smaller screen and the lighter device.

i'm looking forward to giving them a test run in November

Maybe they think that the iPad 2 is newer than the iPad. Or, more likely, it's from all the schools and businesses. Watch there be an iPad C.

iPad Air: $100 more, same exact function for schools and businesses and certain people (since not everybody needs the retina display and faster hardware), maybe even worse if you want the 30-pin port.
Nexus 7: Sucks.

The issue isn't why they have a full sized tablet at $399, but why not the iPad 4?

EDIT: Probably to provide differentiation with Retina display quality (iPad 4 has the same quality display as the 5, while the iPad 2 isn't nearly as good) and the margins I'm sure aren't nearly as good as with the iPad 2. Case solved!
