Demand for iOS 5 and iCloud was so high, Apple almost broke the Internet

“Owners of an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV were yesterday able to update their devices to Apple’s new iOS 5 software, providing them with a number of new features and access to the company’s new cloud service iCloud,” Matt Brian reports for TNW.

“It appears that whilst Apple stuggled to cope with demand, ISPs were facing issues trying to keep traffic flowing through their networks, as Apple device owners attempted to download at least 600 megabyte updates,” Brian reports. “One ISP, AAISP, was ‘caught unawares’ and yesterday evening saw ‘silly high usage since around 18:40 [BST]‘ leading them to think that ‘something [was] clearly ‘up’ and there [was] some ‘internet event’ happening.’”

Brian reports, “As Cult of Mac notes, that ‘internet event’ was the release of iOS 5, Mac OS X 10.7.2 and a number of new applications. Throughout the evening, AAISP engineers posted on the company’s Incident and Status Page, noting just what was happening to its network as subscribers fired up their iTunes clients and updated their iOS devices.”

Lost me at whilst, stopped there

I saw some people in this thread stating that their mail didn't work.

I thought I had exactly the same issue until I realized I did not know how to refresh or check again for mail for my iCloud account.

Once I clicked the lightning bolt looking icon, it reconnected. Just hitting get mail (envelope) didn't retry to get the mail. I simply didn't know it was never reattempting to get the mail for the iCloud account.

Just food for thought

Was hoping email on iPhone would automatically be 'checked' if you viewed it on Mac/iCloud site but you still have to open Mail on iPhone to refresh it. At least that is what happens for me, same as MobileMe.

Is anyone else having this issue?

My AppleID isn't an email address, it's just a UserID. When setting up iOS5, it indicates that you have to use an email address for your AppleID so I entered my MobileMe address. I had read that you couldn't merge them but I figured that it isn't that big of a deal to have a separate AppleID and iCloud/MobileMe login. The problem comes in when I tried to turn on auto-sync for iTunes and iBooks purchases on my phone. I get:

"This Device is Already Associated with an AppleID: You can auto-download purchases on this device just once every 90 days. You cannot associate this device with another AppleID for 90 days."

I tried going to the site earlier in this thread https://appleid.apple.com to change my AppleID to my email address but it won't let me. It says I can't use a MobileMe address. It appears that Apple has both my old AppleID and my MobileMe AppleID setup as separate accounts.

I just want to turn on AutoSync on for my old account that has all my purchases on it. Is there any way to do this besides waiting until January?!

I was surprised to see such a big updates across the board and Apple servers to manage, apple had really been preparing for this!

They did not mention 10.7.2, the intigrated iCloud part works well, and I have had a much more stable performance thanks to it!!

Mail was down all day, but is working again now. This was the only problem I had with the whole migration (17" Santa Rosa MBP, iPhone 3GS).

From the same article (and obviously omitted by LTD):

"The traffic was around twice what we would see on a typical Wednesday evening. There was as much traffic as we would see for a major sporting event (such as England playing in the World or European cups). Such volumes have never been seen before for a software upgrade."

What else would you expect from him?

cmon Apple

Stop trying to save up every penny, buy few extra datacenters

No issues

[FONT="Verdana”]I’ve had no problems. On the day of launch, I first updated to OS 10.7.2, then updated my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 (even with iPhone 4S coming as I just had to feel the new!

I feel bad for those who had to try once or twice, and I’ve had that happen before but I think we can hardly blame Apple for not being ready.

Heck, I remember when merely watching a live stream, once it got to 200 people it killed it. I can now watch live TV shows on Revision3.com and Twit.tv networks with thousands being streamed to.

IT’s a good time to be a techy, especially an  lover.[/FONT]

Refund for MobileMe

I have a question about getting refunded for current MobilMe customers.

I set up iOS5 on my iphone 4 (not my iPad 2 yet) and everything appears to be working ok. I have a MobileMe account that I don't guess I will be using for anything anymore so I figured that I might as well get refunded for the time I have left on it. I found the page to request the refund than I got nervous. Once I cancel my membership, my email address associated with MobileMe will remain in tact, correct? Because it is the same email address I used to set up iCloud. I am pretty sure that will not go away, but I was just suddenly nervous to cancel because I was not sure.

Anyone else cancel their MobileMe subscriptions? Or have any issues doing so?

Mail working on iPhone, but duplicating on iPad!

OK, this iCloud business is getting to be ridiculous!

My email (mac.com from MobileMe to iCloud) seemed to be migrated without a hitch to both my iPhone and iPad2, but last night I noticed that suddenly I had duplicates of EVERY SINGLE EMAIL on my iPad! iPhone is unaffected, though. Is this happening to anyone else? Help!

What would Steve have done?

The only thing Steve might have done differently was rolling out iCloud one area at a time over several weeks. Which would have also pissed off folks.

So basically Apple was screwed no matter what. One group or another was going to gripe. About this, about iOS 5 not downloading in 3 seconds for them. For not having 'enough' iPhones for everyone.

And don't forget that Steve was likely still in the loop when these plans were made (it probably wasn't overnight)

I wouldn't guarantee that, even with having already moved to iCloud.

Then again, given that you did that move, you might not be able to request the refund anymore.

I would try to contact someone at Apple Support and talk to them before you do anything

I tried going to the site earlier in this thread https://appleid.apple.com to change my AppleID to my email address but it won't let me. It says I can't use a MobileMe address.

That's correct. @mac.com and @me.com were auto registered as Apple ID's and you can't use that email in an Apple ID.

If you don't have some other email for the Apple ID that you use in iTunes you can either use the @me.com just for iCloud but not the iTunes stuff or go grab a freebie like a gmail address to put on the iTunes account to bring it up to spec to use for everything

iCloud

I can't log in to iCloud mail on any device - Mac, iPhone, or even the website. My computer and iPhone keep saying my password is incorrect. It all worked last night and earlier this morning.

C'mon Apple. You'd think they'd anticipate the massive load this would all cause. You'd think that massive NC data center would be able to help.

I created a new Apple Id for icloudl I can log in on the web but not on Mail or my iPhone .. my Yahoo account on Mail, however, works fine
I get the same error message about my incorrect password
