Reset your MobileMe/iCloud Password.

make it comply with the stupid "capital letters" requirement of the password.

This is the secret to getting Email to work again

Google "p99-imap.mail.me.com"

for that error and it's fix as it relates to busted Email with iCloud.
Email was down for everyone earlier this morning regardless of the password capitalization. Weather widget on my iPhone 3GS is still down here in Vancouver.

Apple seems to have recovered more quickly than they did with previous Mobileme issues.

So you have the IOS package downloaded, all it needs to do is install, but it isn't allowed to install unless it connects to the server for permission? Yet, iTunes knows we've had these devices. That should only have ever been for new activations, and it was a foolish way to implement updates from the first iPhone on. iTunes tells you the update is available.... so it already knows... why does it need that last step connection to a server? Just stupid.

You clearly have no idea how the firmware updates work.

For a restore to be initiated, a signing request is sent to Apple, and if the restore is allowed, a signature is sent back, allowing the device to accept the firmware.

It's this mechanism that stops users downgrading, or using non-stock firmwares. It's only an issue when millions of idiots hit the server, and keep attempting every few seconds.

System Preferences

Now I have a message in System Preferences -> iCloud that says "This is not your primary iCloud account, only your primary account can use bookmarks, photo stream, find my mac or iCloud storage".

Last night everything was working correctly, now iCloud is falling apart by the hour.

Apple's famous saying "It just works" is coming back to bite them in the ass.

2-hour downtime in the wake of a mass-migration to a new system. It's a pretty impressive result considering what's involved, and considering Apple made it happen all at once (the wisdom of which might be questioned, but Apple did pull it off.)

They are having a harder and harder time making this come true.

It's true now. Sorry to disappoint you.
If they are not careful, the competition will show the world that Apple is not the only tech company on the planet with devices that work.

That involves the competition moving to a closed-licensing model.

I know from first hand experience.

I've got anecdotes, too. And I can make them the exact opposite of yours.
My new ThinkPad "just works" like my new MBP. It is configured the same and cost $1200 less

Cool story. Here's the REAL story:

My new Samsung SGS II "just works" just like my iPhone 4, in fact it works much better as a phone... ooops... Apple better be careful.

"MY phone works like this" . . . "MY device works like that" - Me me me, I I I.

Let's look at everyone else, since you're not the only tech consumer out there.

I love COMPETITION... it's just the kick in the ass that Apple Needs!

It would appear that Apple is doing most of the ass-kicking. I.e., iPhone 4S pre-orders are sold out at all U.S. carriers.
What I REALLY want is an iPhone with a 4.3", true widescreen 16:9 ratio for movies, YouTube and the like.

Ok.
Come On Apple I KNOW you can do it if you just swallow your pride, admit you can't INVENT everything and build a better iPhone.

They did. Which is why they can't make enough of them to keep up with demand.
THAT I KNOW is possible. Apple is my favorite company, that just needs to catch up. Simple really. :)

Catch up . . . with themselves?

Uh ya, I thought we already went through this with mobile me....guess iCloud will be just as "magical" as mobile me...forget it....

More problems than that

Apple's got more to deal with than just slow servers and a MobileMe outage. I've had problems with each product launch:

OSX 10.7.2
Problem:
I have a Late 2008 MBP running 10.7 and after I performed the update to 10.7.2, my MBP would hang on the white screen after each restart. I wouldn't even get an apple logo or loading icon. It took an average of about 17 minutes for the Mac to finally load the OS. Even after that, the keyboard and trackpad would voluntarily quit working. Also, the dock wouldn't respond to the mouse. Very annoying. More restarts with the same problem. A temporary fix was to shut the machine down, remove the battery for a while, replace it and restart the computer. I suspect that some sort of unfriendly handshake with my external USB Hard Drive may have contributed to the hanging OS launch... Just a theory though, since my MBP would usually start up fine without any USB peripherals connected.
Solution (for me)
I had to perform a reset of my MBP's PRAM, by holding Option+Command+P+R during the boot sequence. After that, I was able to reconnect external devices and restart without problems.

MobileMe to iCloud
Problem
I got a "try again later" message several dozen times before the migration was finally accepted. Now, I cannot access iCloud mail at all. My MBP's mail application keeps asking for my password; same with the iPhone4. Still can't access mail.
Solution
None that I'm aware of yet. :(

iPhone to iOS 5
Problem
The update took a while, which is to be expected, but after it was complete, I noticed my "other" usage on my iPhone jumped from 0.28GB to 7.8GB. I had no idea what was taking up that much space, despite thoroughly reviewing all my sync settings, mail settings, etc.

I also have a few friends that lost all their apps altogether. Lame! I'm glad I didn't experience the same issue.
Solution (for me)
I had to completely backup and restore my iPhone to factory settings. I then restored all the data, including apps, music, photos, etc. I'm happy to report my "other" usage is back down to 0.28GB. This solution has been hit and miss from what I've read. It may work for some, yet still others are having ongoing problems.

All in all, I think this is one of the rockiest product launches Apple has ever had. I hate to say that, because I love Apple's products. But no one should have to spend hours upon hours trying to fix problems from new updates. What are other people who aren't very technically savvy supposed to do?

I've always heard people say that you should always wait for the second iteration of a product, so that the manufacturer has a chance to work out the bugs. In this case, I should have listened. I honestly feel bad for some of the geniuses at the Apple Store these next few days. There are going to be some very rude and unhappy people coming in.

Do you just delete the email account in Email preferences, in Lion or do you work something from System Preferences?

If you do wish to go this route, make sure all of your data is backed up (though if it already synced to iCloud you should be ok.)

On iPhone:

Settings ---> Mail, Contacts, Calendars ----> Accounts/iCloud -----> Delete Account (entirely.)

On iPad:

As above. just scroll down on the last screen to reveal the "Delete Account" option.

On Lion:

Mail.app ---> Preferences ----> (select account to delete) ---> (hit the "minus" button.)

Then, just add back your accounts and everything will be there.

iCloud Password Issues

Apple IS acknowledging the password issue with iCloud and email. Just got off of the phone with an Apple Tech Support rep, who was extremely apologetic, said that they are well aware of the problem, and that fixing it is Priority #1. That said, they don't know when it will be resolved, and graciously begged patience and understanding, while admitting that Cloud is "down" at this point

For those of you old enough to be aware of what has for decades been known as the "Time Magazine Curse," be aware that the late Steve Jobs made the cover of Time Magazine this week, following his death. The curse holds that making the cover of Time brings subsequent ill fortune on those who "made it"--in this case, Apple and it's transition to iOS5, iCloud, etc. Just saying'.....

Well I updated all 4 Macs the second it went live. Upgraded 4 iOs Devices, mostly at the same time, then transitioned all my Me accounts to iCloud accounts once I hit 10.7.2.

The fun part was the apple id and mobile me part.

My apple id uses a Mobile me alias account. I tried deleting the alias then promoting to a full iCloud account and that didn't work. So I changed my apple ID to some made up email address then from there I setup in iCloud and got a matching @me address so now I have iCloud with a me address for my apple ID as well. Everything worked out but the email's didn't start working till about 30 minutes ago.

I'm all updated to 10.7.2 and just waiting to be able to move my MobileMe over to iCloud. I've tried every hour for the past 4 with no luck. I'm sure it will eventually push through. I hope.

Yea I don't think they're letting many people through to move their MobileMe over to iCloud yet. I tried several times last night, and twice today, and still get the "due to high demand" message about transitioning. So i'll wait til later on tonight and try again.

Your time to shine, Tim Cook. Make sure heads roll, just as Steve would have done.

As someone in the technology industry familiar with the enormous challenges of deploying large-scale distributed infrastructure/big data, your comment is ignorant and crass.

Give it a few weeks to iron out the kinks. It is incredibly difficult to adequately react to huge fluctuations in load on a massive project like this.

Your comment suggests that users need to lower their expectations. I disagree. If the service wasn't ready to be opened up to the world, it wasn't ready. Things have changed from when we first started setting up WANs and LANs, where service was unpredictable. Now, the expectation is that they are up 99.9% of the time - that's fairly standard for many public businesses, especially banks.

Look at RIM's fiasco this past few days. They were the kings of 99.9% uptime, and pretty much set the bar. Now though, they're getting a black eye out of worldwide unexpected downtime. And they know what this means too: consumers, companies and governments will learn to distrust them. Other carriers and vendors will take their place. And so it goes...

im having a funny issue with my Alias'

when i sent an email from icloud.com and i chose one of my alias it works as it should it shows the email came from "the name i picked to go with that alias email address"

now when i send an email from my iphone and i change the from field to the alias address it sends but it shows my real name as the sender and not the alias name like it does when sent from icloud.com

anyone else notice this?

suffering

Ever since upgrading our iPhone 4 to iOS 5, we've had tremendous LAGS and DELAYS when typing text, such as typing the text in this comment field right now. These delays are ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE in Mail, where it sometimes takes 10 SECONDS for Mail to process what we're typing. This is tremendously annoying, and makes our iPhone 4 completely unusable!! Why did you do this to us, Apple?

I can't help but laugh at your suffering -- you see, I have already been through this hell for 2 years. Just 1 month after I bought the 3G (at the time an Apple newbie, I thought 8GB music storage was the only 3G 3GS difference) -- they sent me the iOS4 upgrade which crippled my phone. Meanwhile I cannot even stand to use it and even get extremely angry when friends text message me because of the 30 second load time just to reply to them. Meanwhile for 2 years I'm paying for this useless piece of **** $40/month to AT&T for "unlimited" data I cannot even use. . .

Learn from history, Apple will repeat this scam time and again. Now iOS versions WILL cripple your phone.

What a mucked up way to begin life on iOS 5. I spent several hours updating and fixing my wifes iphone.

Mail doesnt work, keep asking for an exchange password
Music is local on the device but it is greyed out
Trying to create a icloud account using her apple id provided numerous errors, but eventually allowed her to log in.

Add on top of that, this seems to be the most user unfriendly update in terms of it just works. I spent another couple of hours talking to my parents, my wifes parents, and my wife about what was new and how to use it!

If I here apple "just works" one more time I am gonna kick a puppy.

It's not Apple's fault you didn't know the difference between the 3G and 3GS. Hardly a scam, considering it was entirely up to you which model to buy.

In other news, my e-mail seems to be back to normal, and my iPhone is showing the weather widget again.
