What a mucked up way to begin life on iOS 5. I spent several hours updating and fixing my wifes iphone.

Mail doesnt work, keep asking for an exchange password
Music is local on the device but it is greyed out
Trying to create a icloud account using her apple id provided numerous errors, but eventually allowed her to log in.

Add on top of that, this seems to be the most user unfriendly update in terms of it just works. I spent another couple of hours talking to my parents, my wifes parents, and my wife about what was new and how to use it!

If I here apple "just works" one more time I am gonna kick a puppy.

It's all fixed now. You can go into settings and turn off the artificial overreacting.

A massive transition to a new system and all that really happened was a mail downtime of two hours. Had you been away from your e-mail or tied up with other work you might not even have noticed.

The rest is just a matter of "try again later." Your impatience does not equal a technical catastrophe. Looks like all the Apple fans clogging the tech sites tried to move to iCloud all at once.

The real problem is Apple underestimating just how popular they are.

Still having issues here. My wife's account still has email issues, intermittent on iPhone, totally dead on her desktop. Mine is working, but very slow.

My issue is with iCloud email. It prompts me to "create" a new .me address, when I already have a MobileMe address. Then, when I "recreate" that existing address -- no surprise, it tells me that email address is already taken.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Just admit it, apple made a mistake going all in. They should of staggered the implementation.

They don't go all in on their OS's so why should they not take there own philosophy and implement over a few days.

Respectfully, you are bringing fanboyism to a whole new level.

24 hours later and I'm still getting the "Due to high demand..." message and it's not allowing me to migrate. Meanwhile, people who don't have to migrate and never paid for MobileMe get to whiz through and start using the features? Not cool, Apple.

Email in MBP still working so so

I get "The connection to the server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” on port 993 timed out.". There is a spinning wheel next to the iCloud mailbox. It doesn't stop.

I wouldn't say this is fixed.

It's not Apple's fault you didn't know the difference between the 3G and 3GS. Hardly a scam, considering it was entirely up to you which model to buy.

In other news, my e-mail seems to be back to normal, and my iPhone is showing the weather widget again.

Your comment is entirely beside the point. The fact is I bought a device that worked perfectly well on purchase -- there was nothing wrong with the 3G on iOS3. They subsequently recommended an IRREVERSIBLE "upgrade" to an OS that disabled and destroyed it without warning me whatsoever.

Microsoft in contrast has always supported rolling back windows update packages...

Apple really screwed me.

Has anyone else discovered previously deleted MM aliases now active?

The Mail "app" on icloud.com tells me I only have two aliases. Mail on both my Mac and iPhone give me the choice of three, one of which was deleted months ago.

Migration from MobileMe to iCloud, I give up!

Well not really, but I am fed up trying to do it only to get the too busy message. All those years paying them and still they don't get the migration right. Not a problem, just a nuisance!

And how exactly does Microsoft do it with 1 billion computers to update?

Well that's a somewhat ridiculous apples and oranges question. If you look at the adoption rates of new windows...they're nowhere near the adoption rates of a new iOS. I mean how many computers are still using XP? Also, the fact that iOS is a free update means many more people will do it immediately rather than wait and shell out the money later. I'm completely frustrated with this, but comparing it to MS is illogical.

Why doesn't Apple just use a lottery system based alphabetically by MobileMe address or idevice serial number? When you go to do your upgrade you are advised that you can go forward or you have to wait until a pre-set time. That way the system will be less taxed and people will know going in when to return.

I concur. Its a bit frustrating to move through all their next's only to be shut down at the last.

Come on Tim. Show us the brass that your made of and whip this cloud into shape!

What are you talking about? What happens every first tuesday of every month?

500 million Windows 7 PCs get updated with security updates.

Well...yes...and no....are all 500 million simultaneously trying to download? I'd venture to guess not. People have PCs powered down. Or not online. Is it keyed to your time zone? I remember my last PC was set to update at a specific hour. If it's a staggered small update then how is that comparable to millions downloading iOS at the same time (and migrating their accounts to iCloud)...?

Yes it's true, Apple users are always more in a "mad rush" to update their devices to get the very latest "magical offerings".

I guess you are right. There is nothing Apple could have done to improve the user experience. All is forgiven.

Not cool

Apple really should have allowed the MobileMe subscribers to transition before taking new free accounts. I can't use any of the new iCloud features essentially because I am a MobileMe subscriber.

Still can't access my new @me mail account  just keeps on getting the password rejected.

The password is the same as the apple ID account password the @me mail is created with, isn't it?

Demand too insane

http://thenextweb.com/apple/2011/10...-was-so-high-apple-almost-broke-the-internet/

Demand for iOS 5 and iCloud was so high, Apple almost broke the Internet

“Owners of an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV were yesterday able to update their devices to Apple’s new iOS 5 software, providing them with a number of new features and access to the company’s new cloud service iCloud,” Matt Brian reports for TNW.

“It appears that whilst Apple stuggled to cope with demand, ISPs were facing issues trying to keep traffic flowing through their networks, as Apple device owners attempted to download at least 600 megabyte updates,” Brian reports. “One ISP, AAISP, was ‘caught unawares’ and yesterday evening saw ‘silly high usage since around 18:40 [BST]‘ leading them to think that ‘something [was] clearly ‘up’ and there [was] some ‘internet event’ happening.’”

Brian reports, “As Cult of Mac notes, that ‘internet event’ was the release of iOS 5, Mac OS X 10.7.2 and a number of new applications. Throughout the evening, AAISP engineers posted on the company’s Incident and Status Page, noting just what was happening to its network as subscribers fired up their iTunes clients and updated their iOS devices.”

Yes so smart of them to make me download the binary multiple times for my devices. Brilliant!

But truth be told, the traffic was about the same as a major sporting event. The internet was in no danger of breaking. Only Apple's servers.

From the same article (and obviously omitted by LTD):

"The traffic was around twice what we would see on a typical Wednesday evening. There was as much traffic as we would see for a major sporting event (such as England playing in the World or European cups). Such volumes have never been seen before for a software upgrade."

2-hour downtime in the wake of a mass-migration to a new system. It's a pretty impressive result considering what's involved, and considering Apple made it happen all at once (the wisdom of which might be questioned, but Apple did pull it off.)

It's true now. Sorry to disappoint you.

That involves the competition moving to a closed-licensing model.

I've got anecdotes, too. And I can make them the exact opposite of yours.

Cool story. Here's the REAL story:

"MY phone works like this" . . . "MY device works like that" - Me me me, I I I.

Let's look at everyone else, since you're not the only tech consumer out there.

It would appear that Apple is doing most of the ass-kicking. I.e., iPhone 4S pre-orders are sold out at all U.S. carriers.

Ok.

They did. Which is why they can't make enough of them to keep up with demand.

Catch up . . . with themselves?

Oh my, I guess the truth of my experience is too much for some.

I'm a huge Apple enthusiast, yet that doesn't prevent me from being honest about my experience.

If we all sucked up to Apple how would they improve?

Please do not misread the line above.. I am NOT suggesting that you suck up to Apple, just sayin....

I think they're deliberately halting me.com/move because of the email issues with iCloud.

I know I'm glad I wasn't able to transition, because then I'd have no email!

This is a pretty epic **** up considering how this was supposed to be the not-MobileMe. I don't care myself, but they seemed to be disappointed with the performance last time and wanted to make it flawless this time.
