😳 😒 ”Apple is rumored to be working on an iMac that's larger than 27 inches, which we'll presumably see next year.”

I wonder how many customers are going to continue buying the inferior Intel model only due to the sheer ugliness of the new one.
An iMac is a device you buy for the next 5-10 years and since I’m mostly happy with my 2017 revision, I’m pretty sure its successor will look better than this... childish model.

Or to get far more RAM, storage options, eGPU support [Downgrade to Catalina] and even better on-board GPU support to work with much larger workflows that the 16GB unified cannot manage.

Technology should never be heavier or bulkier than it absolutely needs to be. This holds true for just about everything, from phones to televisions to PCs.
Which is why we don't have cool androids following us around, and instead of just tiny pieces of soulless hardware.

Apple overshot their estimations in making progress on much larger scale unified memory SoC designs and have to punt for another 12-18 months. They jumped the shark.
This just a personal suspicion? Or do you think they are saving unveiling pro-level machines at WWDC? Think higher-end iMac, mac pro mini, etc. etc.

What is this next year crap? I thought the general sentiment was WWDC or at least sometime in 2021? Did I miss something?

Well considering Apple has said 2 year transition, and we now see that they've updated every device that they get away with including the M1, I presume we're gonna have to wait a while before we see Pro level machines. iMac Pro, MacBooks Pro, Mac Pro...my assumption is these will be M1X or M2 powered and are a long way off. 6 more months until MBP's, 12 months until iMac Pro, 18 months until Mac Pro. If I had to guess based on how this is going.

M1X for iMac Pro & MacBook Pro (16") coming WWDC?
That's way too optimistic. If that were correct and these launch by the end of the year, that would leave what? All of 2022 for Apple to update just the Mac Pro to complete the transition?

Nov '21 - 14" and 16" MBP Pro.
Early '22 - iMac Pro
Late '22 - Mac Pro

Disappointed that no 27" is available yet - I updated my iMac last year to a new 27" and was hoping to pass that off to my son and get a new 27" (or preferably 30") Applie Silicon iMac - perhaps in the fall event.

I really like these new iMacs - if I hadn't updated last year I probably would have updated my son's machine (currently a 2013 iMac) to one of these. Might actually think about updating wife's Mac mini to one of these...

I mean it's progress towards what we know is happening, the complete transition to Apple Silicon, but they are pushing out lower end updates first clearly. Later in the year, we will likely see the rumoured 32" iMac, maybe with the same design like this one but more normal colours.

Later this year or early next year Apple will probably bring out a black framed (non-white) model featuring “pro” features like ports, a 30” screen, SD Card, hard drives that fit stuff, and hopefully featuring a real upgrade over M1. I’d like a modern wired keyboard option too. We won’t get a wired keyboard and mouse but Apple should offer wired peripherals as an option as they are IMO fundamentally better and much better for professionals at a desk.

A safe bet is the Pro model is offered in just grey and silver. “iMac Pro”.

Did I miss something or did they announce iPad Pros with more memory and storage (16Gb, 2Tb) than the new iMac (8Gb, 512Gb)?

So M2 and black color only in 27" replacement.
Rumors says Black iPhone 13

Black will be the new "Pro"

I took the 2 year transition to mean every Mac on Apple Silicon by Fall 2021 and Mac Pro Summer of 2022 (less than 2 years) but the Mac Pro to be what really comes way after every other Mac.

We'll have to see how June goes.

The 2012 non-Retina Macbook Pro 13'' was on sale for many, many years at $899(?) on the official store, and I personally know people who purchased it in 2015. You will not be disappointed.

FWIW, some education market contracts have required machines to be available for "X" number of years. They almost always linger so they can be easily replaced as needed. Do not see many schools adopting M1 short term unless they suddenly have budget increases.
My large public university has gone M1. M1s are very competitively priced, and we only get 16 gb ram models.

I agree, but I am giving them a pass for now. this is the mass-produced, consumer version. there is nothing pro or even prosumer about this machine. will have to wait for the next rev of the M1, whenever that is
If it is for the average person, then it should have been priced at $999 at least. $1299 won’t sell for me.

Honestly, if I really needed a new one right now I would go for the current 27", not the new one, I would be embarrassed if that was on my desk.
Dang - I was going to upgrade my Late 2015 iMac Retina 5K with something faster and nicer - I certainly don't want to get a smaller screen. I have to think any new 27"+ iMac is going to have an M1X or M2 chip - since these new computers all come with a chip that came out in 2020, I am going to let my 27" chug along another year.
