Especially since they are not given any information about from where the recording came, or by whom it was recorded.

Since the recordings were anonymized no ones privacy was violated. One of the jobs I had before I retired involved creating anonymized data sets of the patients the organization treated for statistical analysis. All within the HIPPA privacy regulations. And, no, he patients were never told or asked for their permission.

People sometimes use personal information when using assistants that you can decipher who a person is or where they are from. You think Apple shut down this department and put this activity on hold for no reason?

There are clear privacy concerns here. I for one am fully aware and use google products knowing they use my data but Apple goes to great lengths promoting privacy, what happens on your phone stays on your phone which is a lie. For me the issue is more about not being forth coming and selling people on marketing ads that to me promote complete privacy which is obviously false.

So your okay with strangers listening to you having sex our private conversations with out you ever knowing about it?
Are you in a habit of saying "Hey Siri" when having sex?

The iCloud encryption happens on apples servers, that means the private keys are on apples servers. Not much protection when the gov comes by with a warrant.
You got that totally upside down. For encryption, the public keys are used. For decryption, the private key is used. Private keys on Apple's servers would be ridiculous.

Because they have to listen to confirm the AI is doing what it’s being asked and it’s the only way they can check that currently, and if it isn’t then they will teach it what to do.
Apple could send all the messages to Alexa and check if the responses are the same :-(

Personally I’d rather have the level of AI we have and have people listening to what you say, then have an AI that’s much smarter and doesn’t require the checks or has the ability to self check....

I’d rather have humans paid to do the work who I trust more then an AI!
That's a thought.

These things should be opt-in.

If Apple can't get enough participants in an opt-in program, which I highly doubt, they will have to provide users with compensation to sign up.

They should not look at users data as theirs. They need to ask for permission or buy it, like any other third party would have to do.

There is no privacy for any device. We all have zero privacy.

Apple has lied to us for years.

We all accept it. Noting we can do.

It’s the wild Wild West.

Every single letter you type is tracked saved and stored.

Not really. Apple’s product is gadgets and supporting services. That’s how they earn money. Google’s product is advertising. That’s how they earn money.

Not the full story, apple sure has no problem taking google advertisement money in exchange for user privacy..this year alone it was 12billion $

I've always known my recordings were sent. This has been discussed in the years before. I cannot buy that this is some kind of new revelation.

I'm internally always feeling very sorry for when I have music/TV on at the same time and have to yell over very loud and clear "SET A TIMER FOR 4 MINUTES" that some sorry fellow may have to listen to that :p

 This should be an eye opener for those who think Apple doesn't listen in and paid $300 for a mediocre homepod for privacy reasons

Apple is a shady corporation. I’ve always said don’t trust them. They’re usually the better of the evils, but they’re in it for themselves....always have been.

They care about your privacy because it’s a way to have an edge over the competition. They don’t make money off of your data, they make it in other places.

When they need your data, they take it like any other shady company.

Disney doesn’t show G rated content because they “care about censorship”, no, that’s their brand and business model. Apple’s brand is to care about privacy so you buy their stuff....plain and simple.

This, unfortunately, is a breach of trust. Apple should come out and own it like the Apple Maps.

Since you seem skilled in partial stories, here’s the rest: You’re obviously referring to Google paying Apple $12B in 2019 to be the default iOS search engine, not a secret back alley meeting with a bag of cash and your personal life on some list.

Ladies & gentlemen, I present yet another instance from the MR false equivalency engine.

Pro-Tip: Plugging an iPod shuffle charging cable into your headphone jack disables the microphone. For those that still have a headphone jack that is.

I don’t think his point was that this was done thru a secret back alley. His point was that Apple preaches privacy but agrees to work with less “privacy focused” companies for sums of money.

That’s the epitome of hypocrisy. If you’re going to preach something, it shouldn’t be selective reasoning.

Damage control. Bet it took a much of folks several long meetings and gourmet meals to come up with this.

Not at all. Contractors or employees are the same in many companies, and there are valid reasons to hire contractors. They all have NDAs, background checks etc. there is no hypocrisy, only the false outrage over this, especially given the revelations of late.

Siri is actual garbage... I love apple, but NO THANKS.
Yeah, I’m actually surprised that after all of this time and the money Apple has to throw at the Siri development team that Siri remains in a distant 3rd place. A lot of iPhone/Mac owners probably use Google or Alexa in their homes and elsewhere. I know I do. I think if Apple could go back in time to fix their mistakes, (not) buying the company that created Siri would probably be number 1 or number 2 on their list.

The question I have is how often do they listen to what people say to Siri AFTER she gives you a lousy reply.
For example, I was making a long-distance drive on an interstate when my speedometer cable gave out so I had no idea how fast I was going. Thinking the combination of Siri and GPS technology would solve the problem I said, "Hey Siri, how fast am I going?" She said, "I've been wondering that for a while." Yeah, thanks for nothing, twit.

I just assumed that this practice was part of the "send analytics to Apple" checkbox when you activate any new Apple device. It wasn't like the contractors were continuously monitoring people's audio; they were simply checking Siri's response when a query was made in order to improve Siri's accuracy. No one was able to connect someone's name with the query. I can see why this makes good fodder for the media, but IMO it's being overblown.
You are the first comment in this thread being objective and comment with some sort of reality in mind.

Liam: Hey Siri

Siri: (Doo doo)

Liam: ...I don't know who you are....I don't know what you want... If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money... but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that will be the end of it - I will not look for you, I will not pursue you... but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you... and I will kill you.

Siri: bro I’m just a contractor.
Haha niceee

Are you in a habit of saying "Hey Siri" when having sex?

I sure hope that's not a thing for anyone, but you never know about fetishes these days. But the actual problem here is Siri is sometimes quite a bit too optimistic about identifying the trigger phrase. I've had it start listening with sentences that don't have anything to do with Siri or even resemble it. Then there's times like this: https://twitter.com/willhains/status/1165552895149764608

So the issue here is that Siri was unintentionally triggered during sex most likely with sentences with little to no resemblance of "Hey Siri" and Apple contractors were listening to it. I can see why people are upset about this.

As far as the link the obvious explanation is from where people sometimes speak.

However, believing there is a mass of Siri triggerings during sex is pure speculation.

Loving the defense I’m seeing here, from the same characters who would lose their minds if it was an Android OEM doing this

I wonder who else is watching or listening in what we do on our iPhones, or can someone deny this with absolute certainty?

Didn’t think so.

Mostly...
