Do us all a favor, why don't you write a letter with of your insights. I am sure Apple must have just missed this, so hurry... only a few months before this comes out. Here is the address:

You may climb back under the bridge now...

Actually, he makes a very good point. The web without Flash sucks.

You just don't get it. You may jump from the bridge now.... :D

I am over it. The iPad is such a disaster on so many levels. I'm sure some people wil buy it, but it could have been so much more.

What a load of crap! I predict that it will be wildly successful and that the average consumer won't freak out because a few websites won't work. All this nonsense about "half the web" not working, is just that, nonsense.

Thank you. You rather beautifully made my point. Flash is not necessary. What it does can be done in other ways. The 'tools' you describe are just 'compilers', development environments and they could target different delivery engines. Flash is irrelevant. Turn it off.

I disagree. It's very easy to write, "just target different delivery engines". But let's say they do: how do we get it to work right across many browsers as it does in Flash right now? If it is an Educational product you've created and rendered as Flash files, it needs to work a certain way across many browsers.

Even if all these companies could render it to a different engine today, what engine is going to provide the same range of playback, interactivity, etc across as many hardware and software platforms, and various browsers? That's definitely NOT HTML5 + javascript + H.264.

My, you are the busy little beaver. Only joined three days ago, and already have almost 90 posts, 28.08 posts per day and counting. Basically all of your posts say pretty much the same thing. You almost had me convinced by post number 87...

Yep... I've been busy... the propaganda was uber thick on this one. Nothing like a pissed-off loyal apple customer with reasonable expectations. I was pissed about the lack of flash on my iphone 3gs and still am. I thought jailbreaking would probably allow flash on mobile safari, but that has yet to materialize.

Pissed about the loss of matte screen options, and now wanted an Imac 27" I7, but it appears they are experiencing some pretty serious quality control issues that they are internally aware of but have yet to openly admit (3 week ship time... google "imac lemon" or "27 imac screen problem" if you don't believe that either).

Still no macbook pro I5 announcement either.

Wtf

So just add Flash, whats the big deal. Some people want it others don't care. Just incorporate it already. I don't see why anything should be held back. Everyone should have all options available.

Apple's next Pro app:

A animation/content creation tool that generates HTML5, with .fla file import.

Content will be compatible with Safari 4 / Mobile Safari / Chrome to start with.

If it works and is available soon... why not:) Offer something, instead of pissing on my head and calling it rain.

Adobe is in Steve's doghouse, and the customers have to suffer for it.

Meanwhile I see more and more professional designers switching from Apple to PC's because Photoshop and Illustrator run much better on Windows, and are able to fully utilise the RAM on board their heavy machines. Mac users are still limited to 3 GB.

I've been using Bootcamp lately to be able to normally follow e-learning classes which are produced in, you guessed it, Flash. When following these lessons on my Mac, things start to stutter when I have Maya, Photoshop or Illustrator running along with the courses. And that on a Mac Pro workstation with 16 GB!

Not good, Apple... Not good...

OK, step away from the crack pipe! "switching from Apple to PC's", that's a good one! You had me goin' there for a minute. :D

Hmm... I think, I turn off plugins, I don't Flash, I exist.
I brows the web without Flash and it works just fine.
Flash = Ads & Glitz = unnecessary junk
I want real content.

Click a few of these (from a computer that CAN play Flash): http://www.articulate.com/community/showcase/
...put yourself in a Student's shoes trying to learn those topics, and tell me how it is unnecessary junk or not "real content". These would be very difficult to do in HTML5 with Javascript and H.264 without having to use a capable programmer (which is how these are created- no programming skills required at all).

Again... Ipad is NOT pressure sensitive, so there is no game between a cintiq tablet (single purpose pro tool) and an Ipad (all purpose gadget). So all you people sto thinking you'll be able to draw decently on an ipad. Sure they will build app that allow to use 2 fingers to get more pressures, 3 fingers to add depth to the brush or something else... very funny and entertaining. Nothing pro, of course

EDIT: sorry, I thought you were talking about the ipad :) I'll keep the post just as an info for everyone else

Yeah, definitely nothing pro...

ATVFlash. I manually hacked it at first by cracking the case, but this option is much better since you can load it on a USB stick and it just works. I got rid of my cable 2 years ago and haven't missed it at all.
That looks really nice. I use Hulu, Windows Media Center, the IPTV plug-in for Windows Media Center, and the local library. I do record digital over the air on my desktop but I'm trying to move that to a networked device right now. To be honest I've grown fond of Windows Media Center and it suits my needs. Failing that I can use my MacBook on my lap in bed with Movist or MPlayer OS X. :D

I am afraid so. Steve is declining on home hardware and servers and up on remote cloud everything. He wants to sell you your next Mac, a media server capable device, as an instance on a server farm. The price approximates a Mac-Mini and the profit margin is about double. Apple is all about profit margins to improve sales growth thus stock price. Just like with a mac-Mini you have to bring your own display and keyboard. Enter iPad.

So you may well need to ALSO own a Windows based Media Server and if you are somewhere with crippled bandwidth, it may become your primary option.

See? No fanboi here! But no matter what, you will view your 1080p HD and 1080p 3D and 4028p 4K movies from a file not a plastic disc. Probably store-forward to RAMDISC.

Rocketman
I'd rather pay up front for the server that handles my network PVR and Time Machine backups with the ability to expand the storage. Computers on the network with Windows 7 will just see the recorded shows in their Libraries. I've thought about getting a HP slate and then I'd have a networked TV device. Handbrake my DVDs and they'll playback in Windows Media Center once again over shared libraries or plain old SMB.

I'm still poking along with 768 kbps DSL but damn is it cheap here. Hulu is just barely watchable but over the air takes up most of my time. The local library usually has the new release DVDs three days after they're on retail. No Blu-rays yet but some of the more techie people do ask from time to time. :D

I'll have to invest in a larger display though from my current 22" one. We have a 27" tube in the TV room but the motivation to fix what isn't broken isn't that high. I get more bang getting a larger computer display.

\

TV network home pages -- all of'em have streaming content these days that let you watch episodes and clips, all Flash based AFAIK. And it's not just the US ones, every country has a few of these.

This is the one thing that is upsetting about the iPad. In fact the majority of programs I try and watch on Hulu take me directly to the Network web page full of clanky flash.

Tried it... Safari plugins disabled... nothing.....

Now I'm going to turn flash back on and go watch some vids... later:)

Because Steve Jobs is a stubborn old man.

I guess that you're one of those children (age 16 to 23) who believes that anyone over 30 is "old."

A better adjective to use, when describing Steve Jobs, is "determined."

To my knowledge, Apple was the first computer maker to discontinue floppy drives (Oh no! What will we do without floppy drives?), and to include optical drives. Apple appears to be encouraging the use of more efficient and innovative software by not supporting outdated software (Flash) in hardware that is negatively affected (performance, heat, battery life) by it the most..

actually Adobe stopped caring about the mac years ago...

Somebody else pointed this out, but you guys do realize, that if Adobe stops developing for the Mac, the Mac will die....

Anyone remember how long Adobe took to release software to run on the Intel switch (I mean natively, and not under Rosetta). I don't blame Apple one bit for not wanting to be beholden to Adobe, their track record speaks volumes.

I used to love Adobe products, and used to even teach pshop and other products to other professionals. 90% of my imaging is now done with Aperture, so other than adding type, working in layers, and a final CMYK conversion, I pretty much have cut way back. I do a LOT of imaging too. While Adobe offers useless feature creep, and outrageous pricing schemes, Apple actually functionally changed by workflow, and for the better. Two days ago I taught a professional photographer how to batch correct a few thousand images, and I did in over the phone in less than an hour. He had blocked about four days out to do the task in pshop, and was able to FINISH in less than 2-1/2 hours (a good bit of that time he wasn't even at the computer, as it processed through the files).

Face it, Adobe has moved on and is trying to grab the larger market. Despite the fact their company was basically built developing products for the mac, they have turned their backs time, and time again. Apple has gotten past the point of having to depend on others to develop software for Apple's success... and that is a good thing. We are a secondary market for Adobe, and you can really feel the love too...

no flash forever

Apple will never implement flash. here's why: h.264/mpeg. They want these standard to become ubiquitous and replace flash. So far, they are playable on almost all Apple products. And I feel Apple believes they are confident enough to control the market with their products which in turn controls the future of Flash (less) and MPEG (more) in the web. They were able to influence Google to convert almost all Youtube videos into h.264, which is major! Apple knows they can change things and they will resist flash as one way to do so.

power pc moment

"Remember how much better PowerPC was than Intel because Apple said so... until Apple decided to switch to Intel and then Intel was great"

it really does look like a return to apple hubris. ipods reversed apple's sales momentum because they were good products that functioned flawlessly on pcs. boot camp removed the osx only stigma from mac books and apple enjoyed a notebook sales revolution.

But now its 2010 and we have a web browser that won't play with a third of the internet and a magic mouse without a middle button funcitionality.

Is the fact this product revolves around an apple only chip a coincidence

Tried it... Safari plugins disabled... nothing.....

You're point- about turning to plugins in Safari off and generally browsing around favorite sites on the web- is a very good sampling of the web browsing experience sans Flash. That people here are still claiming Flash is useless, etc, all they need to disable Flash for a while and see how they like Safari browsing without it.

Why do some people think obnoxious ads will suddenly disapear by simply eliminating Flash?

One can just as easily replace them with obnoxious html5 ads...

That's fine, but h.264 doesn't do the complete job. Flash is more than just flash video. Flash animations allow playback to stop, wait for a user action, then branch to other parts and do something else. h.264 is terrific- a great video codec. But Flash does a bunch of other things beyond being just a video codec.

If Apple wins this- if all video goes H.264 everywhere- it still wouldn't eliminate the need for Flash. A lot of the attraction in Flash is for features beyond just a steady stream of moving pictures.
