Hmm, I'd want width too.

4" on the same ratio as the 3.5" works great when horizontal and browsing a webpage.

There's no problem with making it wider as long as it fits in a standard shirt pocket.

The only 2 things making you doubt about getting a Galaxy Note are:
- It doesn't fit in a shirt pocket
- The screen is not unbreakable.

Also, no one would waste precious homescreen real estate on the GameCenter app. Just sayin. :p

[C&P’ing from my post in the iPhone area]

Interesting, and I think someone suggested something to this effect last year during the last “the next iPhone will be 4 inches” debate.

re: the aspect ratio

So many apps are lists, or scrolling pages of data (contacts, Twitter, Facebook, text editors, readers, music playlists...). These all (like the Verge mockups show) would be easy to redesign. Simply keep all the fixed UI elements the same, and lengthen the visible scroll area. Heck, I could see this as a simple bit of dynamic code to account for the available area.

Fixed layouts of course would be a little trickier, and I imagine some apps would want to be written to capitalize on the extra space (like make tabs an option in Safari).

Another thing to note: 1152x640 = 1.8 ratio, and widescreen TV sets are +also+ ~1.8 (1920x1080 = ~1.77)

That would mean the device would use most of the display for widescreen video.

Full screen video

I sure as hell hope not...

When it comes to videos on the iPhone, a 16:9 would still look great when you stretch to full view. But a 4:3 video would get trimmed even more than it already does on the existing screen.

Right now the screen size is optimal for most videos out there. Besides they probably spent many months debating on what size would be the best size for consumers. They settled on this size for a reason, why change that now? Don't tell me it's what the market is going to either. Since when does Apple follow what every other manufacturer does? They set the standards anymore and everyone follows in suit.

**okay those last few sentences were borderline fan-boyish, I apologize in advance...**:D

The point is not to make a bigger iphone, but to have a bigger battery that will be enough for 4G LTE, unfortunately, that means increasing the dimensions of the phone.

What's this? It's not even a rumor. Did you know? Apple could make a 100", 40:1 iPhone by just increasing the height!

Apple isn't going to kill off it's biggest advantage over Android, namely it only has two (x2, for custom artwork) resolutions that developers have to take in account.

This would be a complete disaster for developers, introducing not only an additional resolution, but a third aspect ratio to the iOS system. .

I don't think so. Developers could choose to support only the old aspect ratio-- there would just be unused screen at the top/bottom for such applications. Apple would have to support this deployment model, of course, but that's something Apple would be likely to do.

Doubtful. It would fragment iOS like Android, into multiple aspect ratios and screen resolutions... causing huge headaches for developers.

As someone who works at place that makes iOS apps... it's already fragmented. It would blow your mind to find out how many people are still on 4.3, 4.3.5, 5.0, 5.0.1, and NOT on 5.1.

Changing aspect ratio? I think right now as long as you can type you can write articles.

I've started a poll in the developer's forums asking how difficult this would be to implement:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1356409/

I suspect we'll find that the developers will say it won't be difficult. I know that personally, I wrote my apps so that they automatically adjust to whatever aspect ratio/resolution they're displayed on. (So all my interfaces work regardless of Retina or not and whether the aspect ratio is 4:3 or 3:4 or 2:3 or 3:2... unless I'm mistaken, my apps will display just fine in 5:9 and 9:5, as well, without any modification.)

Hmm.

I know I'd like:
More real estate
Less wasted space on the current interface - I'd like the screen to fill as much of the device as possible.
Better movie "fit"
I don't really want it much wider (small hands) but longer is ok.

this idea hits all those pretty well, but will yet another form factor be ok internally or not? that is the question... Certainly a better user experience without getting all bulky and nasty, and the developers make money developing, so sounds like a winner to me,

A slightly larger display would be great for typing and general app ux, I am willing to carry a slightly larger iPhone as long as it's light and thin with great battery life.
