The governments are doing these things to enhance the situation for their citizens, and generally at the behest of their citizens.

You may not like it, but many do.

False. The government is doing this at the behest of other companies who are only interested in making more money by regulating another company they can’t compete with.

There was no public outcry for third party stores on iPhones. It was all companies like Spotify or Epic that were making all the noise. The EU had formal discussions with these companies when drafting the DMA but public input was only voluntary (meaning people could send their input to the DMA for consideration, but that was the extent of it).

If they truly wanted to enhance the situation for their citizens quickly, they would restrict sales of the devices in the region until Apple met their demands. China and Indonesia had their demands rapidly met, no fines, not back and forth, “We want this” and Apple says “done”.

That’s ONLY if they were really solely interested in enhancing the situation for their citizens. Perhaps if they weren’t so desperately dependent on revenues coming from Apple technology, they’d be able to do the most effective thing they could do to bring about that enhancement as soon as possible.

Remember, all of Apple's EU and in this case, UK problems go away if they just install Android on iPhones! And consumers would lose all choice entirely.

This chart should be appropriately scrutinized according to the population percentage as it pertains to immigration at the point in time of said polling

I'm not an EU or UK citizen, so I'll leave the debate to you all over there. ✌️

I was just pointing out that the UK is not in the EU, as we so often have folks comment in a way that seems to not recognize it (for some reason).

Apple might as well just give in and open up iOS / iPadOS almost every country is going after them

This would be the best thing for Apple and for us consumers. Apple has given up on innovation ... is there ANYTHING really new in the iPhone 17 family? (the "thin" one has no innovation, it just compromises on features) ... and others need the chance to bring new devices and SW to us.

Let's break up Apple into several smaller separate companies so that the phone company part would have to ensure interoperability with many other devices.

I've said this on other threads, but I really think the best approach for Apple at this point is to allow side loading. Then, to be in the App Store, developers have to abide by Apple's payment rules. If they don't want that, they can promote, deliver, and host their apps themselves.

Apple shouldn't be forced to open up a platform they developed for their own business growth (no company makes products for consumers), but that seems to be the way things are going, so they may as well do what they can to protect their business model as much as possible.

"NO UK! The UK is trying to break encryption! Apple shouldn't comply - you have to fight unjust laws! Apple shouldn't just roll over and do what the UK wants, and should even pull out of the UK if necessary to protect their customers. The UK clearly doesn't know what it's doing when it comes to regulating tech, and Apple is correct that weakening encryption will harm it's users' security and privacy. It's not FUD - it's the truth, there is no such thing as a backdoor only the good guys can use."

Also MacRumors Posters:
"YES UK! The UK is trying to break open that app store! Apple must comply - laws are laws! Apple should roll over and do what the government wants, and threatening to pull out of the UK would be ridiculous! The UK clearly knows what it's doing when it comes to regulating tech, and Apple's is wrong that opening up iOS will harm its users security and privacy. It's FUD - it's a lie, opening up won't be worse for security and privacy, even though it's demonstrably true on Android."

Or just restrict the sales of iPhones to the region. It would take a few months but Apple would drop from being a gatekeeper just like that. :D

It’s the problem of regions with no world class consumer tech companies to speak of.

Both can be true. Broken clocks, or something.

The UK by 2030…

I keep saying it ...
Enough is enough!

Apple ... Time to pull out of doing business on EARTH!
Imagine Apple launch their app store in orbit...

Accessible to everyone and beholden to no governments.

(Obviously the USA government would impose their will if operated on satellites launched and operated by a USA company for USA Apple.)

:)

I'm in the UK.

Hot take:

No one much will bother with other app stores apart from those who want to play Fortnite on their iPhone (which admittedly will be quite a lot).

Another country pushing this? Man, I'm really starting to think Apple is in the wrong here!
...and don't forget that even in the USA they're facing pressure over very similar issues, except it takes the form of civil lawsuits rather than legislative or executive pressure (the judiciary is still a branch of government, though!)
