This will be cool to see - the talk of AR integration when I would have thought that would be in the Facetime app is a bit puzzling (as I always think of video when I think of AR). But whatever they do should be cool (could even see them integrate Facetime into it possibly too - most other chat apps do that).

Bud Light and high school football on a Friday night in Texas and iMessage....

The rest of the world does not use it or need it or want it ;)

I hate the app drawer in Messages, always an extra tap to access my photo library, or wasting space if left open. This could go between the emoji and dictation buttons on FaceID iPhones. Oh and dictation button is annoying too, easy to invoke when swiping home.

Never really liked the iMessages format so I don't use it that much. Whatsapp to me has the best UI out of all the apps I have but their problem is security etc.
Revamp of iMessages is long overdue. Its cluttered, their reply function is visually unattractive and overall they would benefit from update so I'm all up for this.

Lets hope its nice so I'll get the desire to use it again.

how about a redesign calendar app...
Yeah, and a redesigned contacts app. It is utter garbage by today's standards.

If you have multiple accounts, it only adds new contacts to default account. Surely Apple understands people have accounts for private / work / sports / etc, so it's nice to be able to add a contact and immediately add it to the right account. Not possible yet...

What's wrong with whatsapp security? It's actually much better than the likes of Telegram. Whatsapp is e2ee by default, and now you can encrypt your backup as well. The only one better might be Signal. I dislike Whatsapp, but now after all the added features like encrypted backup and option to transfer data cross platform, it's actually very good. The only issues are severely resizing photos, and the fact it can only be installed in one phone device. But security wise, it's very good.

Time for Apple to move iMessage and FaceTime compatibility from iOS 7 to iOS 14 devices.

Maybe they can bring green iMessage bubbles into WCAG accessibility compliance for contrast ratio by default, like the blue ones are. Or do they like the situation where people with vision trouble only experience difficulty reading texts from non-iOS devices?

Yeah, Signal is the best for security.
Whatsapp might be ok now but there were some issues in the past. Not so much in Europe as they are protected by the law but elsewhere.
Maybe the policy changed since then though. Also, Meta owning whatsapp is never a good combo :)

They could do a lot of fun things in AR, like have avatars with your contacts' faces mapped onto them and the avatars would move around (forward/backward) depending on how active they are in the chat.

Muted avatars would have a mask. Favorite avatars would have a halo. If one of your friends was listening to something you'd see little musical notes coming off them, and you could click and listen in. You could optionally see what's on their screen (ie: auto-group screen sharing)...everyone could.

That would actually be pretty neat.

Although meta's ownership might be a concern for me previously, adding encrypted backup eased out my concern away.

Gahh, keep Messages simple please. It's a phone messaging app, not social media.
Keep it simple, we have too much social media crap already
Personally, I like how it works now. As others have said, it's just a messaging app and not social media.
It's become more than just a "simple" phone messaging app when you're able to send emojis/memojis/animojis, search for and send memes, send money (Apple Cash), share recently listened to songs, etc.
