Generally a huge apple fan. Wanted to love the FineWoven. Think if they could reengineer the concept and bring it back in a way that didn't end up looking horrible after a couple months, maybe worth it? But the FineWoven products that were actually released were overpriced and under thought.

"We saved the environment by blowing up sales at other leather makers like Bullstrap, Nomad, and Andar. We then created a product that wears out in 6 months and has to be thrown away but at least it's made from a frankenplant."

Apple and overpriced in the same sentence? WOW. I don’t believe finewoven is under thought though as you claim.

I like my fine woven.

Please god I hope so. As I've said before, I only used FineWoven as my user name to be ironic and was never meant to be an endorsement of such an awful product. To that point, my avatar pic was pulled directly from Joanna Stern's Wall Street Journal review of the iPhone 15 series accessories last year where she highlighted how terrible it looked after just a few weeks of light use.

vegan leather is plastic...it's not leather. It's like calling impossible burger meat...no matter how hard you wish cast, it's not meat and vegan leather is not leather. It's an fossil fuel byproduct
No one was saying it was leather, isn't that the point. And I have never used it I can't speak to how it or isn't. I currently have a Ridge leather case on my phone.

Socks! I had something similar for my iPod back then with jeans fabric.
I loved the iPod sock! As far as I'm concerned that's when Apple peaked with their clever accessories and fun marketing of them.

While I much prefer real leather, I think Apple should have opted to use vegan leather in their products over fine woven.

I have to imagine there were many internal folks who said the case isn’t durable and looks awful after a few weeks of real-world testing

I’ve had two vegan leather Tommy coats ova the yrs and they Jst don’t withstand me or the elements. I’m very heavy handed, I was a product testa in anotha life -__-

I really, really hope they pull it and kill it. Not just for customers, but for my former retail colleagues who need carefully tap dance around what a miserable product it really is.

Apple absolutely should have just gone to plant based "leather" as a replacement.

Vegan all day but fine woven must’ve really just been the best they could come up with at the time?…that plus the bottom line combined for the perfect storm?..

Vegan leather is a feel-good travesty. I much prefer full grain leather to some 100% man-made concoction straight out of the IG Farben recipe book. It would have to be proper leather, though, not this paper-thin leather veneer over a plastic shell that Apple used to sell as "leather".

And no, not a single cow has ever died for its skin. I eat beef, and I'm all for nose to tail utilisation of the animal.

Feel good travesty?…hmmm. I don’t disagree completely (vegan leathers are environmentally toxic no?), but at the end of the day, striving for the “lesser of two evils” is still striving for good…cows aren’t just stock as Texas farmers would have you believe, no, these are sentient beings with friends and family and a deep seeded need to not want to be executed for any reason…yeah animal chain right? Ok, where are our canine teeth and claws and short length intestines, then??…not to derail at all, only to address this egregious mentality of “using all of the animal is nobler than you give me credit for”…

While I think of it. Did Apple ever announce why no leather aside from “environmental” (if they even said that much)…

Finally, vegan is the truth….it really is, Mother Nature has all the answers/cures…meat and dairy and fish…those are all nerves and blood (essence) and tissue and etc…animals don’t need to cook it just hunt it…

Quite the pickle Apple are in after going to such lengths to trumpet moving away from leather. Any move back to leather (which would be the obvious thing to do) is now off the cards as it would be a PR nightmare. But then, dropping Finewoven would pick a big dent in their revenues from people paying $59 for an iPhone case...

Vegan leather could be an option although it's leaving the door open to complaints that $59 is too much for polyurethane. I wonder if that mushroom-based leather is durable enough and has scaled-up enough to be used...

Mushrooom based??? Ugh so awesome. What a time to…

Finewoven is plastic. 'Vegan leather' is plastic. There is no improvement going from one to another. Plastic degrades, and is just as disposable and non-recyclable when glued to other plastics, regardless of how 'vegan' it is. Calling plastic 'vegan leather' is the attempt to re-brand disposable, non-recyclable, degradable plastic I've encountered.

Just use leather. The animals are getting killed for their meat anyway, might as use all of their parts. It's much more environmentally friendly. Apple absolutely has the resources to dictate what tanning chemicals and procedures occur, and how any potential waste is managed.

See my reply to dotnet…vegan the only way

My wife has one of these cases and it looks terrible after only a few months, with light usage. The silicone cases are garbage, as well. I'm on my second silicone case for my 14 Pro & won't be purchasing another.

Durability issues with your silicone case or something else?…

I could not understand how people defended this case honestly

See above your post, ppl saying they don’t get the hubbub as theirs are not that bad plus they like the look and feel of em..

Leather made from pine tree oil. It doesn't contain eggs or dairy.

So cool…what a time to….

Vegan plant based the best ppl! Get w the program!!!!

There are vegan leathers made from agricultural sources, but it's the same stuff in the end as if it was made from petroleum. Both sources are hydrocarbon strings at the base level, and crude was originally plant material.

Source: Organic chemist for years, before moving on to pharmacy.

So you’re saying they both break down real real slow but are a natural source and so not harmful to the earth really or am I reading too much??…

The mob hate for Fine Woven is wild. Maybe the cost isn't cheap, but I've had a Fine Woven on my 15 pro for about a year now and it's by far the best case I've ever had. I hate leather, silicon, hard plastic.

Wow see posts like this are very fascinating…how did you keep it from looking so grungy as ppl are saying?…why do you hate leather etc?…

Everything about these dire so-called fine-woven cases disgusts me: the egregiously poor quality, the feel of them, the appearance of them and the cynical attempt by Apple to appear concerned for the environment whilst profiteering outrageously from selling an inexpensive and inferior product at similar prices to the leather versions.

I suspect these are no better for the environment, and if a cow is slaughtered for meat, why not make use of its hide? How they must have laughed when they came up with this one, but hopefully it has come back to bite them on the backside. I like most of my Apple products, but heads need to roll over this misguided project.
I had the FineWoven and I agree it was awful. Worst case I have ever had from Apple by far. But do some research. It isn't the fact that it is a cow from meat that is the issue. It is the Tanning process which is far worse to the environment than any plastic product.

1000%. Being against leather is one of the most brain dead environmental takes of all time.

Mine looks almost the same as the day it arrived on launch day – what in the heck are you people doing with your phones? Sure, it's NOT LEATHER or even a substitute, but it's not some fall apart garbage that it's overwhelmingly made out to be.

Nope! Never wasted my money on that junk and never will. Apple screwed me a couple of times with their overpriced and underperforming phone cases. So I've gone third party ever since.

Turning petroleum into "leather" also requires massive amounts of energy and dangerous chemicals, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes, some of them cyanide-based.

I guess that's what you meant?

If not, and you actually meant "skin into leather", then I wonder how leather managed to become and remain a product of choice and in high demand for tens of thousands of years.

Well the original Apple leather cases are very durable.

I beg to differ. They were made mostly of plastic, with a thin leather veneer. Mine never lasted more than 1-2 years, then they started fraying and cracking. For my last iPhone (12 Pro) I didn't get an Apple leather case anymore, because I thought it was a rip-off. It's been 3rd party cases for me ever since.

My FineWoven wallet is in worse shape after less than a year than my last leather one was after 2 years.

And my beautiful leather case on my iPhone SE still looks great after 4 years. Just a little bit of patina. So who's more eco-friendly?

I'm still wondering, wouldn't it be eco-friendly if cases could be reused between multiple generations of the same device? It certainly wouldn't be necessary to resize the camera bump every year. I mean, it's actually best not to buy a new phone every year because each successive generation adds less and less value.

All this eco-marketing pisses me off. Very hypocritical...
“I mean, it's actually best not to buy a new phone every year because each successive generation adds less and less value.”

Wow! How long did that take to work out?

iPhone SE2 user. 4 years and perfectly happy until it dies. Then I’ll upgrade.

They should look into Apple Leather, some luxury brands already use it and it would be very on brand lol. Or there's others, cactus leather etc.

Artificial materials in many ways still just can't keep up with what millions of years of evolution made. It's hard to do the randomly linked fibres in mass production.
