Smart? The refurb discounts are usually a better deal, and come with the same warranty. And don't require misrepresenting yourself to take advantage of.

In the UK they dont check either. I'm a university alumni and am eligible for a discount, however its not behind closed doors or anything. They even give you the 2 year AppleCare upgrade here. It's a fairly hefty discount too. I've been using it since I was back in College and have never had to send off any form of College/University ID.

Oh and the refurb deals for us are never anywhere near the edu discount, which is around 15%.

i bought 3 macbooks under the education program so far and not once did they ask for any prove or anything

As a rule they don't. It's basically the honor system. However, if they did audit the purchase, you would have to prove your education status, otherwise as it says in their terms, you'd be charged the difference of a non-education machine.

I've used the discount while in school, and I also know people who are not in school, and who abuse the system.

Refurbished computers will not sell for as much when you want to upgrade, and you run the risk of getting a bad one. Also, can you get Applecare on them?

It's been my experience that the market doesn't care if the used Macbook Pro I am selling (after owning and using it for a couple of years), was a Refurb, or "new in box" back when I originally purchased it. If you are purchasing it from Apple, or some certified channels, Applecare is 100% available on those systems, with the same terms as applied to a new Apple Product.

I have lost track of how many refurbished Apple products I have bought and sold over the years. Giving Full disclosure on my sales (selling them as a used Apple Refurbished), I have sold them alongside non refurbished laptops for similar, or higher prices depending on what memory / drives I have installed in them.

I can't see how this would get the stock price up....media would spin it as Apple' laptop's not selling so they're forced to reduce prices, and reduced prices result in reduced margins.

True, didn't think about it that way. I was thinking increased sales would be good for the stock.

I would go for the air, 5400-rmp drives are to slow.

yeah but you can always add an SSD and upgrade the RAM on the 13" :p

run the risk of getting a bad one? I think you have a better chance of receiving a refurb unit without issues than a new one. A refurb Mac is a New Mac without the Box, and comes with 1 year limited warranty.

Yup, you can get AppleCare on them. And yes you run the risk of getting a bad one - just like you do when you buy new. They are both certified working by Apple before being sold and come with the same warranty, so if it's bad they will repair it.

People, I mean PC buyers, I mean Mac buyers don't have a grasp on reality and pricing anymore.

999$ and 1299$ is still a HUGE rip-off for computer that old, fat, limited and outdated.

Of course when your mind is limited to the world of Apple product and so you don't have a grasp on the reality of prices anymore you can find numerous rationalization BS reasons, but a quick look at the PC market or even the refurb Mac market will show you how expensive this "deal" is.

If you have problems with a refurbished computer, you do exactly the same thing as with a new one: You get it repaired under warranty.

It depends what you class as a rip off. As far as I'm concerned a ~$500 dell is a pile of junk. What smart idiot thought putting the intake fan where your knee is would be a good idea?

The difference is, you invest in a mac and you sell it 2 years later and loose around 20% of its value. You invest in any other brand and sell it 2 years later you loose about 80% of its value.

By getting into a regular refresh cycle you can get away with paying around $300 every couple of years for a new mac, as you'd be selling your old one.

Spec it out part for part and don't forget the high quality materials of the enclosure vs the crap other companies make.

They dont check online, but they do at the Apple Store, at least in my experience.
They do at the store and are sometimes d-bags about it. I told an employee there I was going back to college for continuing education and since I didn't have current student identification he wouldn't sell me anything... and this was with me with a handful of other accessories and bags and whatnot in my arms... then this larger gentlemen must've overheard what was going on and shoved him out of the way and said "let's complete that sale for you!" Tried very hard not to laugh.

This. I don't understand why people miss this since it's the most glaring reason people buy Mac laptops (even people that don't want OS X buy Mac laptops and just use it for Windows or Linux). It's not cheap, plastic crap like 99% of the laptops on the market. Even the MacBook knockoffs aren't built as well as Apple's... they're getting closer, but my god the trackpads are still far away.

Just looked at the Government store for Federal and State employees and the price change is the same for it as well.

Because the people that quote 'specs' are usually the engineering number types that have no clue what design is and counts for and why Apple products are successful.

You know....its no different then someone touting some specs in a car with more HP, bigger engine, etc...but that car gets beat by a car that is better designed aerodynamically with superior parts, lighter body materials, etc.

They'll still tout 'well my car still has more HP'...that's nice.

Hey! Thanks for posting this, I've been looking all over for a price lower than $1099 for a 13" MBP for my daughter's HS graduation present; just ordered from Apple's website.

Thanks for helping save me an extra $100; it'll pay for 1/2 textbook when she gets to school in the Fall.....:p

You have to pay extra if you don't want a stupid 1080p low-res display. I cheaped out and bought a $75 LG display, and it's good enough for me, but I got what I paid for. No extra features or hub capabilities, low quality screen, and annoying notifications about how much CO2 I have prevented from escaping into the atmosphere (???).

obviously 75 dollar screen is going to be crap. there are better screens that are under a grand is what im saying.

The 13" cMBP is Apple's best-selling machine. They won't abandon or get rid of it until they can sell a 13" retina at the cMBP's current price point. Maybe next year.

I'm not 100% confident the cMBP line will get discontinued this year (I'm just playing the devil's advocate here), but I don't think sales numbers are any proof it won't get discontinued. The iPod mini was also the best-selling iPod when it was discontinued. Apple has a tendency to force what they see as being the future on people (think about optical drives, Flash, mechanical hard drives, ethernet…).

Apple treat students very well. Hefty discounts and free repairs in the UK. I remember my intel core 2 duo iMac needed its logic board replacing 2 or 3 years after I bought it. Apple didn't charge a penny. Great stuff.
