I never thought I'd be here, but I already have a surplus of USB-C chargers. It is unlikely that I will need another adapter until the standards change.

I have a box in the closet full of older chargers and adapters. If I don't find a use for them, they will eventually be given away or sent off to e-waste.

The iPad line up is so confusing. I literally thought the entry level iPad still had TouchID
It does have Touch ID in the button on the side and no Face ID, just like iPad mini and iPad Air. Just no Home Button. Apple ditched that when the iPad Faux Air 10th Gen. launched.

iPads Pro are the only iPads to ever get Face ID.

Absolute madness to think that iPhone got Face ID in 2017. And the mid-tier, non-"Pro" iPhones have had it since 2018.

Maybe iPads Air can be blessed with this 2017 tech sooner than 2027-2028?

Only Cook knows.

Do you think this might be a sign of the upcoming Macbook Pro’s regaining price parity in the UK compared to the US? Most other devices are priced the same in £ as in $ yet the Pro’s are currently £100 more.

One would think so, as at current exchange rates your still paying more even with 20% VAT ($999 is £768 right now, +20% VAT makes that ~£922).

But I just checked, and the iPad Pros are the same £ as they are $?

i use the iPad 9 myself bought when it first came out thought about buying the 10th generation when it came out but now with it being several years old now it would be pointless to buy it I do wish they would update the chip at least I’m sure with 8 gigs of ram the a16 might be able to run some ai features at the most!

Yeah most products are equal or slightly less in pounds compared to dollar yet the iMac and MacBook Pros are £100 more than their equivalent US model in dollars. Hoping the Base Pro with M4 will start at £1599 instead of £1699

Though I appreciate what you are saying...

The idea with CEX is that items are graded A, B, C. An A grade (always my stuff!) is well cared for and sold pretty much as pristine including all original items in the box.

If I were to omit an original accessory then it goes immediately from A to B regardless of the pristine condition of the iPad, box, and cable. The difference between the two in terms of value is £49 which is far more than a replacement charger.

I guess the problem is mine and not CEX's. Someone buying an old A grade iPad expects a charger in the box.

Frankly a new Apple branded one in Amazon is £15 for 20w - so I just have to suck that up if I am heading upwards from now on.
That's the point, CEX's gradings will need to change so that A grade doesn't require any sort of charger, or they'll likely start losing business and people stop trading with them due to that requirement.

I think, to be fair, its just going to be a case of 'tough luck on me' really.

CEX want to sell the original, as bought package which included the charger. I guess its my decision to 'sell' to them rather than trade in to Apple etc and for A they will always expect 'as new'.

Frankly, I buy from CEX myself and always go for A grade and you can usually expect them to include everything. Im not sure I would support them grading as A and missing original components.

So yes this works against me right now.

The only thing I would suggest is maybe introduce an 'A-' in that it's just missing the charging plug for all the reasons we understand in here. Id be happy to buy A- too.

Cutting the price and making me chose if I need another charger (or want two good-quality third-party ones for the same money) was the right thing.
Too bad they didn't cut the price when they did that with phones, which made them look like cheap ******s.
I agree with the sentiment, though having counted the asterisks does your epithet start with an " F " or a " W " 😉

They have to create a new SKU, and new packaging label text. They also have to create a new packaging procedure, but it will be the same procedure as for the next iPad, so it's no extra cost. That all probably cost them $10K. Meanwhile they save $3M. It's not that much trouble. I'm sure there is an edict, even at Apple, to create efficiencies where they can.
Not “even at Apple”, but “especially at Apple”.

The thing is, if a new base iPad was coming in 2 weeks, than this would only cost them money. New SKU, slight changes to production process, shipping them to retailers, etc.

It’s a very clear sign they aren’t announcing a new iPad 11 in 2 weeks time.

So the charger trade-in folks: Do you own only one charger? Do you have a separate USB-C charger for every device?

I have Anker 67W three-port chargers at:
  • My home desk
  • My office desk
  • My laptop bag
  • My travel bag
  • Next to my bed
If I didn't mind unplugging it each time, I could use just one of those for all my devices. (However, I'm forgetful, so at a minimum I need one at the office to stay there, or I'd forever be missing it at the wrong time.) In any case, it charges my laptop, phone, watch, and iPad. And yes, while that is about US$200 in chargers, the beauty is that I won't need any more for many years, and without thinking I have one available anywhere I am. The last thing I need now is to get a single-port charger with every new device. I have a small bin full of those.

And don't even get me started on the fleet of iPads at work, which charge in a rack and don't require a new charger every time we replace one. That's another bin.

I still have a mix of devices using various ports—lightning, USB-A, micro USB, USB-C, etc. I’m not willing to start buying all USB-C chargers yet.

<sarcasm>Wow, it’s very inspiring to see how brands take sustainability to such high levels of commitment, no matter if they lose money in the process or even run out of business (they say “planet is first”): by removing chargers we are saving the planet three times at least.</sarcasm>

Other non-European countries also received a price cut. This is just Apple updating pricing after 2 years to reflect current exchange rates.
That fits. The Euro had a very sharp drop before October 2022.
Apple doesn't usually decrease prices on old products to adjust for exchange rates (increase them, they do, of course).
But the removal of the charger might have triggered it (new SKU or whatever).

Anyway, I was hoping for a new model as the kids are now old enough and its either 2 iPads or 2 Switches this Christmas. Looks like I'm buying old hardware in either case now. :\

I’m waiting for both iPad 11 and Switch 2 for the kids. I’m not going to let Xmas ruin the upgrade cycle. ;)

How is it confusing? You can go to Apple’s website and do a compare:
Air and Pro monikers are fine. But not the size / naming / pricing of “iPad” and “iPad mini.”
I think the entry model should be renamed and marketed as iPad SE to match its features and price point, bringing it in line with the iPhone naming scheme for better consistency.
I think iPad mini should join the iPad Air group. This would clear up the lineup greatly.

The iPad Mini will definitely not get updated again anytime soon. Now that Apple had just updated it, they’ll forget about it for a long while (as they do with anything that has “Mini” in the name).
Didn't you know MINI is actually Apple's acronym for Maybe It'll Never Iterate?

Price cut is due to exchange rate changes, instead of the removal of the charger. Other non-European countries also received a price cut. The title is misleading.
While things like exchange rate changes are undoubtedly major catalysts, there's no way for outsiders to know all the exact influences of when and by how much a company changes price.

This also means no new iPad until at least next Spring.
Dang I thought that Apple was doing good by charging less because they removed something.

I agree. SE might make sense for the entry level. All the same, I don’t find it confusing. Maybe it’s just me.
