How is it confusing? You can go to Apple’s website and do a compare:
Bro. There are too many iPads. Remember the famous Steve quadrant?

The standard iPad should be discontinued. The iPad Air should be rebranded to just iPad to replace that. And the iPad mini should just be part of that mainstream iPad line, just marketed as a smaller screen size version of that line of iPads. And the iPad Pro should remain as normal.

So it would be just iPad, and iPad Pro, is my suggestion.

This post is probably annoying a lot of people right now, sorry. 😆

Sure. Sell the iPad Air at the entry level iPad rate, and I’m all in.

But that won’t happen, and I think that as a consumer I bear a very slight responsibility to do a couple of minutes work to simply compare the models and find the right fit. I’m good with more choice.

This iPad mini seems like a stop-gap model tbh. Very minimal update.

I'm sure Apple wants the base iPad to be AI-compatible soon but it definitely cannot have a better chip than the mini.
It might seem like a stopgap (seems like a fine update to me), but this is the only iPad Mini we are getting for the next 3 or so years.

It took 1000+ days for Apple to go from the Mini 6 to the Mini 7. There won’t be an iPad Mini 8 next year.

Good to hear about price reduction. As for lack of charger, expecting it to be gone for all iPad models in the next 1 to 2 years.

But that would eliminate the lower price entry point into the iPad world. Suddenly a consumer who was happy with the £329 iPad is going to have to pay £599 for an iPad Air.

While things like exchange rate changes are undoubtedly major catalysts, there's no way for outsiders to know all the exact influences of when and by how much a company changes price.
It’s easy to guess. Just check non-European countries. Those that had large exchange rate changes received cuts. Countries with currency pegged to the USD did not receive a cut.

The difference being that even in these "quadrant" products, there were a lot of configuration options, sometimes even going as far as allowing you to configure different optical drives (CD, CD burner, read DVD/write CD, SuperDrive).

So you could just combine the regular iPad and the Air, and then have the SoC configurable between the A14 (or maybe something newer soon) and the M2. You'd still have the normal storage and cellular options. They could even make the display lamination on optional build-to-order thing.

So it's all a matter of perspective I think.

As I said, the exchange rate was undoubtedly the major factor, but it doesn’t exclude other factors.

I highly agree that the mini should merge into the Air or just general iPad moniker. The current “iPad” could be marketed as SE for a clear distinction for lower cost option.
Having a consistent, clear naming scheme across all devices is very important.
And also, yes there’s too many. Steve would be screaming at them!

Just leave iPad as iPad. It’s by FAR the most popular one after all. The iPad mini is a much, much less popular product.

Does it matter how popular the mini is? They can adjust their orders to match demand.
There should be some consistency in naming across their offerings to make it easier for the average consumer to understand and make decisions.
(“Air” used to mean lighter and thinner. The iPad Pro is no now thinner than the Air. 🤦‍♂️)

Apple is already selling these. All they need to do is tweak the names of a couple of them.

Heck, they can even sell old M1 MacBook Air as MacBook SE option, and the base MacBook in the new lineup would be the current M3 Air.

While they’re at it, they should absolutely not sell a MacBook PRO with NON-PRO CPU. It’s a mockery, ridiculous.

Yes. The iPad is the most popular, and it makes the most sense for it to keep its original name, because it is the OG line. There really is no reason to confuse everyone with a useless name change, cuz nobody outside of MacRumors really cares about your hypothetical new naming scheme.

That makes even less sense. The MacBook Pro is a form factor that will be shared between the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max. The CPU choice is actually secondary for many. Some people need faster SoCs yes, but not everyone does. Some people need the advantages of the MBP design. It should be noted that the M4 MacBook Pro will be faster than every single Intel Mac ever made, aside from perhaps the top end Intel Mac Pro in some workloads. Also, in terms of multi-core CPU speed, M4 is roughly as fast as M2 Max. And in terms of single-core, M4 blows M2 Max (and M3 Max) out of the water.

EDIT:

I just checked, and the M4 iPad Pro is faster in Geekbench CPU multi-core than both the 2019 2.7 GHz 24-core and the 2019 2.5 GHz 28-core Mac Pros.

Can you tell me where you get your sales statistics from? As far as I know, Apple stopped sharing unit shipment data six years ago. I am just curious.
And regarding the "OG line." Apple has changed that a lot. iPad Air replaced the "OG" line in 2010, then they went back to simple iPad name in 2017, then in 2017 started selling iPad and iPad Air simultaneously. You see?

The MacBook Pro is a form factor
that's a very arbitrary line. By that logic, there should be an M1 MacPro?

True, but you can't cater to everyone's particular set of needs and create a product for them. Companies create different lines of products for different sets of needs, and it can't always be all the features you want and none of the ones you don't. (Think of trims in modern cars. Some features come bundled with others. If you want MBP's display, sure, it comes with an M3 Pro.)

M4 MacBook Pro will be faster than every single Intel Mac ever made
That's just the progression on tech though. It doesn't mean much in this context.

But then again, it's just us talking and no one at Apple is listening. Moot.
