Isn't the MR headline wrong? "Apple Cuts iPhone 14 Pro Prices in China..."

Is Apple cutting prices or are various retailers having sales? When Costco or Best Buy or some retailer runs a promotion on iPhones, is it Apple cutting prices? I got my iPhone 13 Pro for <$100 after tax from Best Buy (sure, there was a trade-in but it was still a discount through higher trade-in values). Does that mean Apple slashed prices due to poor demand? No. I've done similar deals over the years. I've never paid anywhere close to full price for an iPhone.

That's not GOOD news, but if they're cutting the prices of all brands of phones, then something is going on other than lack of demand for iPhones in particular.
It could be excellent news for consumers and I hope we see a similar pattern across the western World too. Smartphone sales are down Worldwide, lets hope this forces manufacturers to assess their pricing strategy. Prices in the UK and EU are completely taking the mick.

When you essentially make the same phone six years in a row, these things are bound to happen.
Global shipment of smartphones are down for every manufacturers, with Apple actually declining not as much as the rest. Seems like they’re doing well.

We should do this no one buy a new iPhone this year so we can all get a juicy discount 😂
Well, that actually would do it. But the same people complaining about the same iPhones are the. The ones pre ordering and trading in YoY 😂

I mean how many people complained how the iPhone 14 Pro is not much difference than their old 13 Pro or 12 Pro, AFTER they themselves bought the new phone? That’s quite funny.

If they have to keep jacking the prices up to cover the decreasing demand, the drop-off eventually becomes steeper. I'd imagine all manufacturers are concerned, even Apple despite profits being good at the moment.

So it’s confirmed production issues had little to do with poor sales, and apple didn’t sell much because iphone 14 was underwhelming and overpriced. Good, there is hope that apple learned the lesson and will give us something more decent in September.
Not really. The above is conformational bias. Apple could have had production issues and now is trying to regain some lost ground.

If poor sales were due by constraints in production and not lack in demand there is no reason to reduce pride to ‘regain lost ground’. If there is demand people will buy, so prices are kept the same. the only reason to reduce prices is to stimulate demand.

As you said apple is already using old gen chips on the standard iPhone. How did that go? People are not stupid, apple can certainly try and release another iPhone without upgrades… or perhaps do like they did with HomePod and actually DOWN grade it and introduce iPhone 15 with 8 megapixel camera, 4G antenna and low res display but at increased or similar price. I’d like to seek them try, let’s see how many they sell 😉
From the article

" is among the retailers that have taken 800 yuan ($118) off iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models in the last few days."

Neither of those phones use the old chip.

Now they just need to follow suit in other markets and everything will suddenly sell better. Magic! 😉

In France iPhone 13 mini cost 809€ before iPhones 14 came out and… [drumbeat] - the same 809€ after iPhones 14 were released, so 0€ price cut for the last year model. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Had they dropped them as usual, the sales would have been way better, especially through the carrier channels and such.

I know, I was writing in response to someone saying that apple would respond by cutting corners (like it did with the HomePod) and removing features or using cheaper components if it was forced to reduce prices. I was pointing out that it tried doing so with the iPhone 14/14 plus and it didn’t go well (it didn’t sell much at all, it went even more poorly than 14 pro / pro max). But you raise another interesting point, the fact that also the pro and pro max models are being discounted proves that the theory that they were doing very well and compensating the lack of demand of the vanilla version is also misguided: apple is struggling to sell all versions, including the pro and pro max.

I think this will be at least the third time Apple has lowered iPhone prices in China since 2019. Apple cut iPhone prices in China in 2019 and launched the new iPhone 13 models at lower prices (than the 12s) in 2021.

The sad thing in emerging economies like China is that especially young people there spend way too much money on things to impress others. The social pressure there is very high. You get bullied if you do not buy expensive brands. I am glad that we in the west are more or less over that and nobody here cares if you wear are $3 shirt.

The irony is that people in China know more than anybody else how cheap it is to produce electronics in China. Yet they still spend such a lot of money on an iPhone.
Over it? Americans have a weird superiority over anyone with a green bubble FFS 😂

Apple marketing have created that and Americans fell for it.

So Apple found a market where they don't want to spend $1600 on a damn phone?

Refreshing to know that there's a place on earth where folks don't want to just throw stupid money at toys...
Weird to say something you use every day for communication, entertainment, and in many cases business is a toy.

In your opinion.

Correct, after supply constraints.

Yes but they're running a special version of iOS that phones home to their government with the cloud. o_O
No they don't. Or rather: There isn't evidence of that. Cloud data is stored on Chinese servers, yes, but that's unrelated to the OS on the device.

Well, different markets have different situations, so both can be true.
