Convenience, eBay fees, PayPal fees, potential for fraudulent buyer ripping you off, etc. Yeah you’ll usually make some more selling it on your own but for a lot of people it’s not worth the hassle.

Count me in as one who will gladly trade in an iPhone to Apple, simply to avoid the hassle of a private sale. I know I’m taking a big hit on the resale value; that’s the price I pay for the simplicity and convenience.
And for avoiding fraud.

Yeah, though I still use ebay for stuff that's not likely to be fraud targets. Won't sell high value electronics there though.

Last couple phone upgrades have been via carrier trade in promotions - T-Mobile/Costco - and provided a much higher value than even selling via private party. Downside is the best promos seem to occur close to Thanksgiving.
