It's a shame. It's such a great innovation, but Apple seems to be slacking on the marketing. The ads sort of make out FaceTime to be an awkward joke of an experience.

The ads will win many awards. Most Americans are sentimental and shlocky, I expect these ads to work quite well. Personally I prefer ads that appeal to my intelligence, but I'm one of those nerd power users that nobody cares about anymore. :(

Or they show normal people how a phone call can be enhanced by visuals.

The emotionally numbed geek generations don't listen to adverts, but the other 90% of the real population care more about what tech can do to make their lives better.

I am all for a bit of healthy cynicism, but sheesh! :D

I think even emotionally numbed geeks can feel sentimental, but these ads are just OTT especially with the Louis Armstrong music.

These ads are now airing in the UK, and people are making fun of them already. "iPhones - for people too snobby to see their family in real life" I believe was one comment I saw.

Not that it's a bad thing, of course. Parodies and word-of-mouth piss taking only serve to provide more marketing to the product/company.

Given this forum's initial reaction to the iPod, the Mac vs. PC ads, the iPad, and myriad other decisions Apple has made, I am going to go out on a limb and say that these ads will sell Apple another few million iPhones.

Just two points.

1st, anyone who has not experienced an awkward situation in their family or personal relationships that are similar to those portrayed in these ads are either liars or borderline dysfunctional.

2nd, Facetime equipped iPhones are potentially going to be for the forthcoming baby-boomer grandparents the equivalent of those bulky, over the shoulder, video cameras that were bought by grandparents 25 years ago.

Ah facetime. Just like video calling that "three" network launched here almost 10 years ago. Been there done that have a rotting video conference phone in the cupboard as proof.

Its a gimmick feature and after using a couple of times wont be used again. The reason ? You both have to have the same setup for a call.

Yeah, I remember those old Three video phones, still have a Motorola A835 in a draw someplace :D

No, this is the reason why there might be a semblance of a possibility that it moves beyond gimmickry. Couples living in Georgia will have iPhone 4, their parents live in California, Washington, and New York will have iPhones, and everyone can see the grandchild grow up.

That was why it failed in the past it was only on a few high end models
(that and the ropey quality)

But..... When the 3gs is retired next year - EVERY iphone sold will be setup.
And ipod touches too probably.
And anyone with iChat ready desktop/laptop (presumably)

And there suddenly LOTS of people who are available for a bit of facetime.

Would i use it every call? Probably no.

Do i see something every week i would like to share and discuss with someone? Probably yes.

The acting wasn't that bad. C'mon. I've watched worse acting in the past 6 months, and I had to pay to watch it. This is free.

Let me go through a list of movies I recently watched were not only was the acting horrible, sometimes the plots were worse:

Losers
Hot Tub Time Machine
Unthinkable
Iron Man 2 ---(btw, never watched Iron-Man 1, but I expect it to be just as bad)
Transformers 2 --(I really regret this one)
Kick-Ass
From Paris with Love

---the list could be longer---feel free to add any summer blockbuster where most of the budget was spent on CGI and the plot is nonexistent.
