Apple continues pushing their easy to use the video conferencing of the iPhone 4 as its main marketing message. Four new FaceTime TV ads debuted tonight on Apple's website. Two (Meet Her and Big News) are embedded above. They include:

- Meet Her
- Haircut
- Smile
- Big News

Each commercial shows personal conversations and moments where video conferencing plays a key role. The iPhone 4 sold 1.7 million units in the first three day of sales, making it Apple's most successful product launch to date.

the only thing that bugs me about facetime is the whole wi-fi thing, and i know that's been said a million times.
but you can video chat on a laptop/computer from your house,
doing it with iphone 4 is cool because it's portable. but still, if you can't do it on the go, it seems way less useful/cool.

you pretty much have to sit down and plan to facetime someone, rather than just do it. if you want to show someone something, you can't be like. oh hey, check this out. it's more like, hey man. are you in a wifi area? ok, get to one. now turn on your wifi. alright. now look at this.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one with common sense!

These are well filmed and full of emotion. Apple does well at creating and associating feelings.

BUT, I don't think FaceTime is the selling point of this phone. At least not for me.

i definitely think these ads will attract people to the phone.
especially those kind of people who are like "well just in case"
the same ones who buy a huge truck to hitch their boat that they plan to get and use all the time in the future. and also, the extra back seats for when they go camping all the time.
you know, just to have it. so they can technically use it for things they won't actually ever do.

but they keep doing the same kind of moments, like.
a baby?
going to college.
pretty much being there with a loved one when you are far away.
and at 'emotional' times.

they should do some more common uses, such as.
hey man, i'm at a concert. which t-shirt do you want me to get you?
what are the options?
i'll show you.
facetimeeeeeeeeeee.

I'm sorry, but these commercials are horrible. Are they really going to run these on television? The only decent one is the grandfather one. The rest are embarrassingly awful.

I like how the AT&T end screen says the worlds largest WIFI network. Even AT&T itself is avoiding its terrible phone network.

or just promoting that the carrier that the iphone itself is on is the world's biggest wi-fi network. to which is required for facetime, which is being shown off in the ads. one stop shop.

Ask Apple
Is it me or is the haircut one a little too stereotypical? The female is almost asking for permission to like her new haircut from the husband/boyfriend.

Am I the only one who got that feeling?

Not in my opinion, but we all know that and a quarter will get you 25 cents. Its nice for apple to be talking about actual features they offer instead of what other companies do or don't have.

Nice ads. Apple always knows how to do ads.

Hmm, well I definitely like their style of advertisements. They're emotional, and I think they're much better than the Sprint ads for the Evo which just show the specs of the device. Those ads tell you facts about the product, but they just aren't engaging and they're forgetful.

I really like "Meet her". "Haircut" is alright, just the subtle flirting at the end is sort of awkward and has me thinking that they're planning some inappropriate use of FaceTime right after. "Smile" is nice, but silly when the dad says "They look good" and she says "Really?!".

And "Big News" is pretty awkward as well with her asking him if he's got a minute and is alone.

You want to start the "Common uses for FaceTime" thread?

Jony: Hello?
Phil: Hey dude there's this totally hot chick sitting right behind me.
Jony: Why don't you go talk to her?
Phil: Can't... i need a wingman...
Both: FACETIIIIME!

I wouldn't look into it too much. I did the same thing when I got my haircut, and im a male. She's just asking his opinion and she's unsure. I don't see it as a sexist thing at all. Maybe gender stereotyping but...that's what ads are abot, stereotyping the consumer.

facetiming might actually be fun to watch people with,
i mean. using the back camera so nobody knows you're watching them.

i do that with my first gen iphone sometimes in camera mode if i'm bored in a restaurant or something.

Wow, I feel manipulated now.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I feel somehow that Apple is showing me a new feature while at the same time daring me to use it, as though if I DON'T use it and miss out on these heartstring-tugging moments, I'm some kind of jerk.
