apple ads used to have substance

They definitely have some extremes in their marketing approach/voice/style:

One end being really touching, people based ads, with focus on the what you can do with the product, and at the other end, tragically hip ads (like this) where it’s like they’re winking and saying “Hey, we know, you know, how hip we are... it’s Fallon and JT and they’re making wacky sounds! Right? Right?"

(and then some serious train wrecks like the “genius guy” ads from last year[?])

I don’t mind the minimalist presentation, but I like when it’s done with a simple, voice over that clearly illustrates the feature and the benefit. They’ve also has some outstanding celebrity voice contributions by folks like Bryan Cranston and Robin Williams, so identifiable voices, when combined with good writing and be really effective.

As a marketing major, I'll still readily admit I'm not an expert, but the Timberlake/Fallon "huge" one sucks (haven't seen the other). That's harsh, I know, but it's harsh because this is for the most valuable company in the world. It leaves me thinking "wow that was stupid, they tried so hard to be funny." Besides that, 95% of people won't know who's doing the voices unless someone tells them, they'll just think it's a couple of people who think they're funny.

Sorry, Apple. You can do a lot of things in-house and you do them excellently. I wish advertising were one of them, but advertising is something completely different. This is Apple thinking they can do anything, it's arrogance. It's not much worse than their previous agency's work but it misses the mark.

You're thinking way too hard. The ad works. (I actually work/live/breath marketing). It's not sophisticated but it's fun.

I'll say it again. These ads are simple, effective, to the point.

The ending of the Camera ad had a flare of fun to it, and that makes it better than the Huge ad, imo. If they managed to incorporate more of that creativity into every ad, that would make this campaign so much better.

I think they are counting on recognizable voices that are clearly voicing strong features of the phones. The viewer should be focusing on the phones, not on faces.

These ads work. (proof is in this very thread... people are TALKING about them)

Part of me thinks that while it's true that bigger phones have been available for quite a while, this is the first time the iPhone was this big.

Steve Jobs famously made a joke about bigger phones and clearly did not consider them meaningful. But also, he also told Tim Cook to not think about what he would do, to just do what he thought was right.

For that reason, I can respect Apple because last year I felt that Apple had done as SJ said and introduced a new design for iOS, this year they announced several new features that were noticeably missing. Plus, they're doing big phones for the first time.

Yes, all those things we could have found in other mobile OSes. But that doesn't mean they haven't done anything new and original either. They still managed to develop an extremely well fingerprint reader, make the first 64-bit SoC for a mobile phone/tablet, and they still managed to create a new popular category of tech, smart-watches.

I'm actually having fun watch Apple change without Steve Jobs, even he made mistakes.

With that being said. I like the ads. It's very similar to the iPad Air ad.

These ads are so terrible that, when I first saw them on TV, I thought they were another Samsung mockumercial. Imagine my disappointment when I saw it was an Apple ad.

I don't know if this was an internal ad or a vendor ad, but they need to fire the people responsible immediate. We've had such a great run of ads and now this.

Oh, I think anybody with half a brain can come up with a better ad than either of these.

How about an ad that shows off various people using the large screen in situations that would be beneficial? I'd love to see an ad with three people with different size hands using the 5s/6/6+ at the same time.

Or, show real people using the iPhone with some of the new features of iOS 8 - like Health or Time Lapse.

These are my '11:00 at night' ideas - come see me after coffee tomorrow morning and I'll bring more.

Apple needs to go back to the classy/inspirational ads - those were great!
(Specifically the 'Every Day' ads.)

Show a man prepping a kitchen/dinner table for date night with his wife and talking to her with the speakerphone on an iPhone 6. He has a bottle of wine in his left arm and some groceries he just bought in that hand. He uses the reachability to get to something at the top of the screen. He mumbles, "Huh.. it just worked." Then he remembers trying to do it with a big Android and has to use his other hand. The bottle slips and smashes on the floor. His wife asks "what was that?". He responds with something made up that's actually funny.
iPhone 6, big that works.

I consider myself a real Apple fan. Do many of us real lack a sense of humor.

It doesn't matter what the ads are, there will always be a chorus of people complaining, especially now that smartphones are such a regular part of daily life. There is no way to be all things to all people.

Logic doesn't follow. People are talking about them in this thread because that's what people do in forums; discuss posts. ;) The effectiveness of the ads can't be ascertained because we're discussing them. The following is not the most appropriate response but it will work in a pinch: correlation does not imply causation.

Recognizable voices? Fallon and JT sound similar. A certain segment of society might be able to pick out Fallon's voice but who knows what JT's speaking voice sounds like? James Earl Jones, Robin Williams, Morgan Freeman, Patrick Stewart, Samuel L. Jackson... those are recognizable voices.

Pathetically cheesy ads, im sure you could do worse but this is bad enough!

Very good point!

Reachability,

Concession for larger phone,

Common sense for larger phone.

Do android phablets have this feature?

Most of them have a similar feature. My G3 allows you to shift the keyboard and dialer left or right to assist when using with one hand. I believe Samsung also has some "one hand" adaptive features as well so it's not new.

They're just standard commercials, some of 'em okay. Perhaps they would have done better by owning the name dropping and shown Fallon/Timberlake in person.

I like the ads but do you really need to advertise the new iPhones?

Is there any consumer on the planet who is not aware of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus?

Incredible demand. And incredible awareness.

These ads seem to be taking Apple in a new "less sophisticated" direction. Maybe they are designed to target a different demographic since Apple probably figures they already have their core customers locked in for life.

+1

Couldn't have said this any better. Apple knows its core group is going nowhere fast. Apple pay was the final step, not that that step was actually needed, though

I wondered that to I, even kids at my work (restaurant) that are 16/18 knew all about this new phone! I'd be amazed if many people didn't know about them. Minus droid people (Although they probably did to just to find something to talk ****** about)

I kind of felt like the "Huge" ad was a subtle jab at those who have been complaining about the iPhone's screen size for years now. Kind of like saying here you go...it's huge now...you happy?
