stupid ads

apple should ask for a refund from their advertising agency

totally! imagine how much they paid those 2 for that ad? at least they can laugh all the way to the bank along with their brand new iPhones! wonder if they signed a deal that requires them to use iPhones in public as well....

They should have let Fallon write the ads too because I seriously doubt he would have written something so unfunny, that is attempting so hard to be funny

Out of these, I only liked the "cake" ad. The rest are just horrible. I have no idea how Apple just accepted these ads and probably paid their ad agency a lot of money for them. Saying HUGE HUGE HUGE isn't a very satisfying thing if you ask me. It's more like an ad of a Ford F-250 truck.

iPad 2 ads were one of the best modern Apple ads ever made.

Lol

But nobody wants big phones...Apple just learnt a big lesson in why you should respect consumer demands and trends rather than Steve Jobs' old assumption that consumers don't know what they want and have to wait for Apple to deliver it to them. OBVIOUSLY this was the biggest decision Apple made in a long time and it wasn't based on some arrogant assumption that consumers do not know what they want.

Apple needs to send Samsung an apology/thank you letter because without Samsung blazing the way for phablet sized phones Apple would not be enjoying this kind of success with the iPhone 6.

haha yup. that's comedy, but i can see the russian-doll premise carried out over the next few years. i wouldn't even call it a bad thing. everybody uses these things for vastly different purposes with different size requirements based on their day. no two [x] brand owners are the same, regardless of how much you think your phone is 'perfect for you and you alone'. that's why all this flamewar stuff is such ridiculous garbage.

I'm really surprised they didn't release an iPhone 6c as well:

  • 5s internals
  • new body design from 6 and 6+ in a 4" size
  • metallic colored bodies
  • 16/32GB of storage
  • $100 on contract
  • drop the 5s and 5c

p.s. - the base storage on the 6+ should be 32GB!

I was unapologetically amazed by these ads. Amazed that someone actually got paid for doing a glorified middle school A/V project.

Better idea? A child with a box of crayons and some construction paper could have come up with a better idea. These ads seem lazy; as if someone just gave up.

Bolded: Challenging the internet? Are you of the younger generation?

If you like the ads, good for you. Not everyone shares your opinion. I don't think anyone is bashing Apple. These commercials are just plain crappy... imo of course.

Sounds like you should go watch a Michael Bay flick.

if that's even remotely true (which it's not) then Samasung should apologize to apple for considering the 1st gen iPhone's screen 'too big'. their entire mobile phone division was listed as 'other' on inventory sheets before 2007. i mean, who cares, really, we could do this all day. they're all awesome phones. and if you hadn't noticed, people's opinions evolve and their wants can change. like wanting a keyboardless touch screen device when there hadn't been one readily available and optimized before.

Samsung needs to wash Steve Job's feet for creating the modern smart phone. The S5 doesn't exist as it is without him.

In the camera video, you can see the lens of an iPhone move as if it has optical zoom? Is this a 6+ feature because my 6 lens does not move when zooming.

EDIT: Never mind - it's autofocus.

Part of me thinks that while it's true that bigger phones have been available for quite a while, this is the first time the iPhone was this big.

Steve Jobs famously made a joke about bigger phones and clearly did not consider them meaningful. But also, he also told Tim Cook to not think about what he would do, to just do what he thought was right.

For that reason, I can respect Apple because last year I felt that Apple had done as SJ said and introduced a new design for iOS, this year they announced several new features that were noticeably missing. Plus, they're doing big phones for the first time.

Yes, all those things we could have found in other mobile OSes. But that doesn't mean they haven't done anything new and original either. They still managed to develop an extremely well fingerprint reader, make the first 64-bit SoC for a mobile phone/tablet, and they still managed to create a new popular category of tech, smart-watches.

I'm actually having fun watch Apple change without Steve Jobs, even he made mistakes.

With that being said. I like the ads. It's very similar to the iPad Air ad.

You presented an excellent point: Apple is not doing as Steve Jobs would have, that's for sure. This means that Apple might move past the limitations Steve put on the company, and that is a positive thing in many ways. And they are certainly innovating still, as the Mac Pro and the :apple:Watch indicate.

That said, it's a shame that no one at Apple has equally good taste as Steve. My biggest gripes with them lately has been design-based, not functionality-based: ex. I like how iOS functions but HATE its look. Same with the :apple:Watch.

Regardless, it is encouraging to see Tim make some decisions that do cater to the market out there, even if it brings Apple out of their shell a bit.

Now, bring back a 17" MBP and add a non-tube Mac Pro (or screen-less iMac) to the lineup so we'll have something to talk about, Tim. I still want computers from you, not appliances! :p

I wouldn't say Reachability is a concession. It's the only way to make a large phone manageable. It really is common sense.

I'm a complete hypocrite because I own the 6 Plus and have been criticizing large phones for years. I accept my own hypocrisy. But I do argue that there has never been a large phone done as well as the 6 Plus. And Reachability plays no small part in that.

Back to the ads, though. I don't care for the "HUGE" ad. It feels forced. The other one was good, though. :)

This is a matter of opinion, of course. I concede that Apple's attention to detail is second to none in the industry.

But the Note 3 is a compelling, well thought out phone. The integrated stylus is useful, and a lot of its other features are still unmatched by Apple (like its IR blaster). I can do more with it, and that's the point, despite the fact that I prefer iOS functionality for what it does provide.

For me, it got to the point where the device's external appearance just didn't matter (I actually prefer plastic to metal on my phones), and functionality and customization became king.

Even if Apple released an iPhone with ALL of the Note 3/4's features, I'd still wouldn't get it, because Apple's iOS lock-down is too much for me. So I agree the iPhone is nice. Very nice. Two years ago, I would have remained ignorant of Android had Apple released it then and not forced iOS 7 on me.

But alas, once I regained control of my devices, I can't give it back to Apple.

Hopefully this behavior will not continue and or migrate to the Mac, or we're done.

Sorry for the hijack..:D

Baby Boomers got Lennon and Letterman.
Generation X got Cobain and O'Brien.
Millennials get Timberlake and Fallon. Ugh.

I don't mind these new ads from Apple.

I see a lot of people posting "this is not like Apple" not just with the Ads but on the screen size etc. But honestly I would be more surprised if Apple was to stay the same.

The reason why Apple had 3.5 Inch screens back in 2011 is because it worked back then, people wanted it. Now people are use to bigger screens and thats what people want now, hence why the 6+ is a huge success. Apple made the 4.7 for those who want a smaller phone, everyone is now happy.

Lord Jesus, someone finally gets it.. The bigger screens are in. Apple would've been foolish not to capitalize, copy, or whatever you wanna call it. Companies who do not adapt usually get left behind. Netflix changed the game with its streaming and methods of dvd rentals. The Dinosaur that was Blockbuster decided they didn't have to adapt. Blockbuster is dead now. Back in 2007, you had the iPhone makes it debut. Google saw that it was taking off and saw that touchscreen devices were what the people wanted. Some on here say it's copying, I say its smart business. If you see that the masses want touch screen devices, and I'm talking the touchscreen devices with multi touch that actually work, why not capitalize and change your OS to fit phones of that nature? While Apple had the iPhone, you had game changing device like the og Droid, Nexus and Evo. Then you had Blackberry. There's a reason why they are where they are at, right now...especially when compared to android and iOS.

Great post, Sean #

those ads are horrible, feels cheap like samsung ads.

whoever designed them should be fired.

Ugh, ads with annoying voices are never good. They even sound condescending. And these particular ads had no thought put into them. Usually Apple's ads are quite good.

meh

Working in advertising, maybe I see these differently... but I agree with most of you. I think these ads are a strange departure from Apple's commercials the last few years. I chuckled a bit, but probably mostly due to the fact that I like JT + Fallon. Overall, though, I think it was kind of forced and a little cheesy to focus on the obvious. After all, the big size is nothing new to phones, so I kind of don't give a *****. I think it could have been more clever, given the talent used.

I would have said the same except without any "IMO". They're bad, period. Anyone in middle school could have topped this with some "real life" shots.

And let me remind you of how Apple has adapted iOS 8 on iPhone 6 to continue with this philosophy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqx5ANqFFiU

Apple knew a lot of customers wanted bigger screens, and they managed to give us the bigger screen and give us the ability to operate the iPhone 6 one handed.
iPhone 6 doesn't need this funny gimmick. You can't reach your phone one handed on the 6+. The 6 can be operated fully without this "feature", so it's pretty much useless for the 6 and aimed more towards the 6+, which doesn't really help to reach the corners. I love my 6+ though, I operate my iPhone with 2 hands most of the time, so it's not a big deal.

Apple today debuted two brand new ads called "Huge" and "Cameras", focusing on the larger sizes of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and all of the new features of the highly praised new camera in both devices. Both ads once again feature Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake having some banter.

The first ad, "Huge", has Fallon and Timberlake talking about how big the new phones are. While Fallon points out "huge" new features like the Health app while Timberlake repeatedly points out how the phones are literally "huge".

The second ad, "Cameras", has the duo talking about the camera features like time lapse, 240 frames per second slow-motion video and image stabilization for video while using their voices to vocally represent what each app does.

The ads are the third and fourth in a new series of ads starring Fallon and Timberlake. Earlier today, Apple announced that the company sold 10 million iPhone 6 models over the weekend.
