The only thing I think is weird is keeping the iPad 2 for $399. Who's going to buy that when they can get a retina Mini with all the upgrades for the same price?

I'm not get why the iPad 2 is even $399! I was hoping for $299 and a $199 original mini.... or $249 mini.... $399 for 3 gens back tech is insanity

So the updated iPad mini gets a price increase of 21 percent compared to the last one. That was pretty unexpected.

When the full sized iPad got retina display, the price stayed the same.

And as I posted in another thread I can't believe apple is still offering 16gb as an option and charging a premium price for it with Rom chips so cheap now, 32gb should be what a 16gb is going for now. I won't pay what they are charging, I would 2 years ago not now. I'm going to a Win 8.1 tablet and sticking with my Nexus 7 2013

The question is not "Why would anyone pay more for the new Mini?" It is "Why would anyone pay even MORE for the full-sized iPad?" Next to the iPad Air (ach, dumb name), the Mini is actually a bargain, considering the specs, higher ppi screen, and the size/weight advantage, all for the same technology.

In my view Apple did not do enough to differentiate the two products. It's a strange logic the way they set up their products and pricing, but it's not a stupid logic. The current logic pushes people towards the new Mini, which at the new more expensive price still comes off as the best deal of the lot.

If component prices for the current iPad Mini have not dropped 10%, then Apple just shot themselves in the foot financially by dropping the price to $299, much less it they had gone to $249.

Trust me, prices have fallen, and apple gets pricing well below others.... when you see those tear down estimates, those go on standard wholesale pricing... they do not account for any deals apple has for volume with vendors...

The mini was price a bit high in the first place... okay, not even a bit. WAY high.

Yes, I'd much rather have a price increase and the mini get the latest technology than no price increase and skimping on specs.

Me too! I really wanted the mini to be equal but smaller and that's what we got!

Can someone confirm please: are there pre-orders for the Mini with Retina? Or is it like the iPhone 5s where sales won't start until Nov. 1st in which case I'd just pick one up at the Apple store on my way home after work.

Mini with Retina is not available November 1st!

not according to the literature thats out post keynote. still $329

You are in Canada. (So am I). The iPad mini was $349 here. It has been reduced $30 to $319. So, it's not $299, but it's still $20 more expensive than in the US.

There's a lot of talk about the Nexus 7 today.

Is it really a hot product? I don't recall seeing record sales numbers for the thing.

If the Nexus 7 is listed under Asus' numbers... Asus only sold 2 million tablet last quarter.

In contrast... Apple sold 14.6 million tablets last quarter.

So it doesn't look people are buying the Nexus 7 as much as people are talking about it.

Maybe this will give the N7 a boost when the inevitable comparison commercial pops out with the price as the last view. Who knows. Who cares. I posted a week or two back that I was torn between the N7 and an rMini. The price bump sealed the Mini's fate for me. For my particular use case (email, internet, consumer stuff), the price difference can't be justified. That $170 can go towards 3 extra games for my new XB1.

The N7 may not sell a lot of units but at least they will soon have 1 more.
My youngest will get the trusty old iPad2 (that thing was/is a workhorse). My MBA has long since been co-opted by my teenager. This whole announcement was sort of meh for me. The rMini looks nice but for my use case this :apple: is not worth an extra $170.

Eh. I agree and disagree. I think the pricing is more likely to push potential mini purchasers to the Air. This is the dilemma I was dealing with momentarily. As for the specs, they are differentiated by their size. There are a lot of us who prefer the smaller size and we're unhappy that it came with older specs. I'm thrilled that the two are finally equal internally.

I'm not cheap by any means, and i still will be getting the new mini, but 399 kinda sucks, that's literally double what similar specd android tablets sell for. I think people would of been more happy if they made it 349 and the old mini 249. I think this might push more people to go to android, But that's just my 2 cents

I posted a few times, speculating whether Apple wanted to tier the mini and regular at different feature/performance levels, or reach a parity where they're the same other than size - I guess they chose the latter.

I'm a tiny bit surprised the rMini is $100 cheaper and not less (i.e., higher price).

So I'm guessing we'll be waiting until mid-end of Nov. for the Mini with Retina?

What makes this tablet $170 dollars more expensive than a 16gb Nexus 7?

Android hardware is pretty comparable these days, although the iPad is still better built than most.

Apple's App Store has better quality content than Google Play Store.

But yes, if you're only using it to surf or email, either will do - from a numbers perspective only, the iPad mini does look expensive. Ecosystem wise ... maybe a wash.

I do think ultimately Apple needs to lower the price of the iPad to ~299 or even 199 to start.

Hahaha, they have to save something for next year...

They did it with the cameras on the original iPad > iPad 2. Next year's model will be the one to get. If you already have an iPad, wait for it.

That is if next year's iOS models even get Touch ID. I've read about people having issues with Touch ID. It was a little disappointing that Touch ID was excluded this year from both iPads (especially surprised with the omission from the iPad Air), but definitely not a deal-breaker for me. I was pleasantly surprised that the iPad mini 2 got the A7 and 128GB capacity.

Now, with the same components, it really only comes down to 1.8" of screen size difference, a quarter pound of weight and $100. I think this is Apple's test to determine the future of the 9.7" iPad Air, given that an iPad with a larger screen may be inbound. I think the iPad mini has earned its spot in the lineup with its excellent mobility/portability factor.

(new Retina Mini) WAY too expensive :(

And the old Mini was already on sale for $299 on and off for about 6 months, so Apples price drop is nothing special (guess Wallymart might sell them for $279 some day soon).

And the $399 for the Hi-Def will be a huge turn off when someone looks at a hi-def Android tablet for half that (yes, not as good, but still).

Last July buy.com had the iPad mini bundled with $80 credit for $299, effectively making it a $219 device. If I knew then what I know now, would have santched one.'

Let's not forgot resale value which I don't know about some of guys but it's extremely imporant to me. It's one of the big reasons I keep updating my Apple stuff. Because I know I'll get a fantastic return when I sell on Craigslist later on.

Example: just sold my iPad 2 32GB recently for $300 cash. If you do the math and forget about taxes I basically got to use the iPad 2 for 2-1/2 years for half price. Retail was $499+$100 for the storage bump. That to me is awesome. I know in 2-3 years when I'm ready to get the iPad Mini Air or whatever is out then, I'm confident I'll get $200 for my new Retina Mini. How many of the Android tablets can do that? Most of them I bet people will struggle to get decent cash back for them.

Apple doesn't really care about what the public wants, they want profit margins. If it doesn't fit with margins it wont happen. People will still buy it.

In a magical world apple would reduce their prices by 50% take over the world, and receive about £3.5million of profits per quarter rather than £7mill.
Surely there comes a time where they say "we have enough money lets take over the world and market now".

Of course they don't care. They're in it to make money. Just like every other company in the world.

At the end of the day, all I can say is whether I'd spend what they want for whatever it is they are selling. Sometimes, the answer is "yes!" Other times, it's "nope."

This might be a "nope" sort of a time. I need to think about it, of course. :)

The problem with the mini is that iOS is still just scaled down for the hardware, and not truly optimized for the smaller screen. This makes things easier for developers but suckier for all of the users who have to deal with smaller tap targets and cluttered interfaces.

Seriously, you're going to complain about smaller targets? The new iPad Air is for you then... unless you're going to complain about the price next, which seems to be very popular in this thread.

Come'on people... these are amazing prices for the BEST products on the market. The competition giving away the good at underpriced values does not mean that Apple needs to do that as well. If you want cheap, go by cheap and enjoy the [lack of] enjoyable experience.

I just wish the the Nexus 7 had the same 8" form factor as the Mini, which is the perfect size (even better than larger displays). I greatly prefer Android over iOS these days, and I don't mind saving the Apple markup on my Chinese-sourced consumer electronics, so an "N8" would be ideal. Samsung also makes an 8" tablet but it doesn't run stock Android, doesn't have the screen of the N7 or mini, and costs quite a bit.

Oh well.

So Americans demand that Apple build products in the USA, which is obviously going to increase costs dramatically over the low labour cost overseas, but then they complain when the price of products either stays the same or goes up slightly? You can't have it both ways. If you want cheap, there's plenty of cheap options on the market that come with an equally cheap and unreliable experience.

128gb LTE Space Grey for me.

Likely be hard to get hold of pre Xmas, but the sku I'm getting will likely be easier to obtain. Good luck getting a 16gb wifi.

People keep complaining about prices but obviously consumers are willing to pay. The iPad mini wouldn't exist, or have a price "increase" if there wasn't demand.

The doughnut shop down the street raised it's price by a quarter. Guess what? it's the same damned size, and same ingredients. It's called ****ing demand, get over it folks. Apple has more analysts and information about the market than you ever will. If you don't want buy, good, vote with your money, go buy an Android. Otherwise whining and trying to compare specs is pointless.

And just like pure capitolism, those of us who can't spend, or justify spending that kind of extra money will go elsewhere, and Apple ends up With 0.00

I was in the market to replace my 7" Playbook. Based on my recommendation, my mother and father were in the market to replace 2 other tablets that were dieing or on their way out. (HP touchpad, and a first gen Acer tablet who's screen broke).

We were holding off our decision making till today.

for $499 for the ipad Air, I might be able to recommend to my Father. and I Might consider it for myself...

But for my mother who's looking for a 7-8" device, mainly for reading and news, $399 for the retina Mini is out fo the question. its not an option. She will not spend that on tablet. But how do i then weight the pros/cons of the normal "mini" at $329, when she can get the Nexus 7, to do everything for nearly $100 less than even the old Mini.

I understand, as most do, that there is a difference in business model between Apple and Google when they price their devices. That significantly different, They make ti a very very hard case for themselves for those on a budget.
Your mother might also look into a Nook HD with Play Store support (US$109 this week only for 8GB - although it includes a microSD slot for expansion) or the original Kindle Fire HD (US$139), both of which might do all your mother wants for a third of the cost of the mini.

for the money they are charging they should have added the touch sensor, then the prie is justified, as it is its a new case and a new processor, same prices

Thank you for the advice. Looking at those for an option now.
