Apple is shooting themselves in the foot by not giving more of a discount to the old mini. $250 would make a much more compelling argument for it, or even $270 and then $370 for the new mini.

If component prices for the current iPad Mini have not dropped 10%, then Apple just shot themselves in the foot financially by dropping the price to $299, much less it they had gone to $249.

What makes this tablet $170 dollars more expensive than a 16gb Nexus 7?

I'm guessing you've never owned a Nexus 7.

I got one for web testing purposes. If I didn't need to keep it for testing, I would have sold it long ago.

Apple pretty much laid out why it doesn't compare well to the iPad during the iPad Mini event last year - the screen size / aspect ratio makes web browsing and lots of common tasks not great, and Android apps on tablets are similarly not that good. I can relate from personal experience to why the usage stats are so skewed between iPads and other tablets (4 to 1).

If you only use it for gaming, reading ebooks, etc, it works well and hey, it's cheap. But it is nowhere near the all-around tablet the iPad and iPad Mini are.

Why do you think Google puts out a tablet at such a low price? Maybe they have to compete on price because they can't compete on quality and experience alone?

Although I'd love to be able to get Apple devices for cheaper, the price difference is there because the products are more fully realized.

The price drop was announced during the presentation and the Apple Store now reflects the $299 price.

ignore me :p Canadian site now updated... 319 Canadian. Wonder if this will be further adjusted, or if we're goint to be paying a $20 premium over US prices for the Mini.
Edit AGAIN: Apple Canadian site has the AIR at 519 as well.
Apple to be charging $20 premium for Canada market it seems.

Double BOOURNS.

Either way, they've priced it well outside what I can justify and will be going elsewhere for our "mini" sized tablet purchases...

Can someone confirm please: are there pre-orders for the Mini with Retina? Or is it like the iPhone 5s where sales won't start until Nov. 1st in which case I'd just pick one up at the Apple store on my way home after work.

Anyone? I'm at work. Don't have time to go through all the articles. Didn't get a chance to watch the live stream.

If they were taking pre-orders, you can be sure they would have announced it. They didn't.

The retina panel and the A7 are more expensive and when you consider the iPad Mini at $329 was eroding margins, if they had kept the price the same, they'd be taking a major hit. And dropping the price of the non-retina iPad Mini to $299 probably hurts margins on the product even more, so the iPad Mini with Retina is likely at $399 instead of, say, $379 to help recover those margins.

I'm not doubting that they want to cover their margins and I think they have to charge whatever they think they need to charge. What I mean is that, as a consumer, I don't really appreciate the big price jump. If they can make a full-sized iPad smaller and thinner and keep the price steady, they should be able to put a retina display on a Mini without charging 70 bucks more to do it. If the margin is so terrible on the 1st gen Mini, why reduce the price?

Holy crap, I'm now thinking of whether to get a new mini or an Air now, since they both have A7, retina, and 128GB storage!! What to do?????:eek::eek:

Buy an iPad Air as it's better value for money.

What makes this tablet $170 dollars more expensive than a 16gb Nexus 7?

The Apple logo on the back, the people who happily pay that much, nothing else.

Can we all be more outraged that Apple keeps up with the $100 price increase for 16 GB --> 32 GB across all iDevices?

Both have A7 chip so both have M7.

Apple states that Ipad air will be available online and instore on Nov 1, pre ordering doesn't seem to exist. Buy it on Nov 1!

Hope Ipad mini 2 isnt nov 30th release.

wow very disappointed the the new price scheme...:(
$400 for iPad mini is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE.
when they upgraded the full size iPad to retina, the price stayed the same..should have stayed same here too.. I'd accept a little price increase but $400!??

I waited 1 whole year for the Retina mini..and now extremely disappointed with this stupid price.:(

So the updated iPad mini gets a price increase of 21 percent compared to the last one. That was pretty unexpected.

When the full sized iPad got retina display, the price stayed the same.

However this got more than just a Retina display. Power and specs went from an iPad 2 too an iPad 5. Look at it this way, you are getting an iPad 5 with a slightly smaller screen for $100 less.

I hope someone can find out whether nor not the new iPads have 2GB of ram. Since going back two generations it has had 1GB of ram, I hope they've increased it. Adobe is working on Lightroom for iPad, and other future apps and iOS updates will likely put a strain on that 1GB. 2GB would give me peace of mind to upgrade. My iPad 2 with only 512MB isn't running iOS 7 very well, with lagginess and app crashing more common.

This.. I'm a patient, but long suffering photosmith user, and I'm sure the crashes I still get when going through quick rating sessions would be eased with more RAM. Think next years refresh might be my time to upgrade my 3.

Apple doesn't really care about what the public wants, they want profit margins. If it doesn't fit with margins it wont happen. People will still buy it.

In a magical world apple would reduce their prices by 50% take over the world, and receive about £3.5million of profits per quarter rather than £7mill.
Surely there comes a time where they say "we have enough money lets take over the world and market now".

Fat chance you'll be able to just "pick one up". Where have you been for all the launches?:)

But for my mother who's looking for a 7-8" device, mainly for reading and news, $399 for the retina Mini is out fo the question. its not an option. She will not spend that on tablet. But how do i then weight the pros/cons of the normal "mini" at $329, when she can get the Nexus 7, to do everything for nearly $100 less than even the old Mini.

I understand, as most do, that there is a difference in business model between Apple and Google when they price their devices. That significantly different, They make ti a very very hard case for themselves for those on a budget.

From a consumer perspective, I would think you look at her usage pattern and see what kind of tablet will fit her needs that best. With Ipad, you get all the IOS apps. With Android tablet, you get all the Android apps. With Amazon fire, you get Amazon apps. I think that is the most important deciding factor. If you mother only want to use the tablet to occasionally go on the web and read books or magazine. May be an Amazon fire will work well enough (it would be an extra bonus if she like to shop at Amazon). But one of the strength of IOS device is the fact that we can keep using the same device as our needs change. There is almost always an app that fit our need. So you would be able to keep the device an extra couple years (??)

Shoo... go away troll

Why do you even read MacRumors? If you bitch about Apple prices clearly the products are NOT FOR YOU! Go away and let those of use who can buy a new iPad for $829 every year read up on our next purchase.

I don't go trolling on Samsung message boards about how apple products not only work better, but look nicer!

Seriously - get over it - if you can't afford a Mercedes stop coming to a German Car Club page and saying your toyota is just as good. No it isn't and if you could afford a BMW or Mercedes you would be driving one. Since you can't afford an Apple, you drive a Samsung.

Finally Retina display, but no TouchID? Looks like I'm waiting yet another year for an iPad.

Thats what I'm doing.
my mother is already coming from android ecosystem. I told her to hold off purchasing anything new (she typically just goes and grabs a box that says tablet) till after today's announcement.

I would have loved to recommend her the ipad mini retina. But at $399 ($419 Canadian prices), I can't. I'm not saying its not a fantastic device, I'm sure it is. But at that price, when she can get the nexus 7 at $229 (Canadian), keep in the existing ecosystem she already has, its a lost sale for apple. $190 is a lot of difference in price to justify.

For my own device, $419 puts it out. for that price, I would consider a lot of other options for myself, since I already use well, just about EVERY ecosystem and am Not tied to any specific one.

My dad will likely go buy the ipad Air... he's of the mindset, "i'll just go buy the most expensive option, so it's the best"
