In 1984 there was little competition to ibm. In 2022 there is plenty of competition to Apple. Apple in 2022 according to global market share is a minority.
In 1984, there was little competition to IBM and their computers.

In 2022, there is zero competition to Apple and their App Store and control/restrictions over developers... not to mention their control over/restriction of what the own can do with the iDevice that s/he paid for.

It took a lawsuit to force Apple to let developers tell users about purchase options available outside of Apple's App Store.

Android and all of its app stores are a decent competitor to Apple. I wouldn't call that zero.

It is the inevitable result of third-party app stores. A significant number of developers will choose cross-platform UIs when given the choice.
Cross-platform UI is very different to an "android store". There are apps in the App Store right now use cross platforms UIs, and apps distributed via the web on MacOS use native UIs. You're trying to make a link where one does not exist.

Sure. It’s not really related to the original point though, is it?
Yes. My original point was that some developers will choose to repackage an Android app in there was an option to have it run in "compatibility-mode" on an iPhone.

Why should the complaints of "a few iOS devs on Twitter" be considered representative on a larger trend?

This case is about billion dollar corporations trying to take power from a trillion dollar corporation. Not about small indie developers.
This is actually a case of a Billion dollar corporation trying to take power from indie developers by attacking a trillion-dollar company. They want to control billing because if the Netherlands wanted to truly ensure fair commerce they would allow anyone to sell IAP inside any app. Why should I have to buy the brand name DLC when some third-party developer could offer an equivalent for Binder Gold + at 1/3rd the price?

@WiseAJ beat me too it. Literally dozens of manufacturers, but the apple iOS store apple is the most popular. Not to mention console makers, tv manufacturers etc

And it wasn't just an Ad. Steve was fully aware of the Orwellian future. From his philosophy all they way down to how he see things. He is very much a libertarian.

Tim Cook, not so much. You can tell by his talks and his philosophy.
I would say he was more of an old-school hippie that believed the government wasn’t to be trusted very far. But that is pretty much a new-school libertarian….

The App Store mentioned are not in competition. The devices might be. I mean how can say a Store in NYC be in direct competition with one in Denver. Just because both entities are Stores, and may even be selling the same kind of stuff it is not a sufficient condition to be in competition.

This is nothing but farcical argument. People opt for devices like choosing between living in NYC or Denver, not which App Store to go.

@I7guy, yup farcical plays have a lot of adepts.

Cheers.

The App Store is just a feature of iOS devices. As you point out, Apple is in competition with other device manufactures.

On the other hand, Google Play uses retrictive licensing agreements across horizontal competitors to ensure that it is installed on a large majority of devices in the market.

A few devs out of how many are unhappy? Maybe they all are unhappy and should just leave the apple platform and see if the grass is greener.
That exact attitude killed Intel and many others before that.
Third party Developers are the unknown, backstage 50% of the contributors that make Apple ecosystem a magical place.

The Netherlands are really making an example out of Apple. It has been interesting to watch the new and creative ways that Apple is putting off the inevitable, but this squirming shows Apple’s hands early when the EU and US bills/courts will account for these choices by Apple.

Devs need to understand how good the iOS app store is compared to the play store. There will always be unhappy devs…such as epic. Imo, businesses can’t afford to cater to the minority, such as epic… apple kicked their butt out of the App Store.

This! Intel went bankrupt and no longer has influence in the market because... they didn't give in to... um... the whims of... hmmm... third-party chip developers?
