Couple of months ago many here did believe 5.5" iPhone 6 was non existing!!

Every Apple product goes through its "It doesn't exist!!" phase. It'll happen every time Apple does something new, because people struggle with change.

I call it now. If they ever move forward with this product, continuity is going to be a fundamental part of it. As a tablet it uses iOS, when connected to the base it switches to MacOS keeping your jobs open.

Shrugs. I can certainly believe that Apple are disappointed with the output of the iP6+ and want to catch up to demand, but as others have mentioned, the larger iPad has not even been announced yet so...

These constant backtracking rumours are making me weary.

It seems this is the cycle:

1) Analyst makes an unsubstantiated guess on a new Apple product and its release date
2) No part leaks/product not released/product never existed
3) Analyst stipulates why this didn't come to fruition (e.g., iPhone demand, iOS bugs, Saturn's alignment with Jupiter)

I know I'm probably on the wrong website to make this comment, but it seems every time there's a rumour about an upcoming product, there's a conflicting rumour a few days later.

The difference here is the Wall Street Journal. Despite the Murdochization of the WSJ and the attendant loss of quality they still have the best investigative business reporters in the US. And while you correctly describe the rumor swirl in the 6 months before a major Apple tick announcement you'll also note that about 5 days before the announcement date the WSJ typically has an article nailing down a subset of the rumors as factual - and that article turns out to be ~95% correct.

Making tablets gizmos for noodling on the World Wide Web and consuming content is what's seen their sales slide. They are just not essential enough unless they can be, for at least some users, laptop alternatives.

Thank you! This is what I've been trying to express for ages. If Apple keeps targeting their iPad to consumers who only want to use it for basic tasks then they are also going to have to deal with consumers who are least likely to upgrade on a frequent basis because even an iPad 2 does those basic consumption tasks just fine.

Apple needs to make the iPad more flexible. It is entirely possible to make a device that is still simple to use for basic users but that can be extended (by open file systems, active styli, multitasking and proper external keyboard support) to serve productive users who will upgrade much more often as these extensions continue to improve.

Personally I still think 12.9" is the wrong form factor. I'd be much more interested in a surface pro that was similar in size to the current iPad. Tablet use requires ease of use when holding the tablet. If I have to set it down on a table to use it comfortably I might as well use a laptop.

The report also states that Foxconn is having issues with hiring enough factory workers to assemble the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus at its factory in Zhengzhou, China

This is actually fantastic news. Maybe they'll improve conditions enough to not need suicide nets to keep employees from jumping to their deaths...

Just how many believed the 6+ didn't exist?

There was already an established market for large phones, which made the 6+ rumors pretty easy to believe. I haven't seen any indication that there is significant interest in a larger iPad - in fact, interest in tablets seems to be dwindling (or stagnant, at best).

If Apple does release such a product, I doubt it will sell well.

It is because iPads have a 4:3 screen ratio and MacBook Air 13" has 16:10 ratio.

So the display area would indeed be much larger on a 12,9" ipad than on a 13" macbook.

D'oh! Sorry for being a noob.

With that said, I still think the iPad looks disproportionately large in the pic. Given a 13" diagonal, the sides of the MBA's screen would be 6.875 x 11 inches and the sides of the iPad screen would be 7.75 x 10.375 inches. But the long side of the iPad screen still looks clearly longer than the MBA's screen's long side. With depth taken into account.

Anyway I guess whoever made the render would have used the right dimensions of course and what I'm seeing is only an effect of the depth in the pic. I guess all I'm saying is that the iPad maybe won't look quite that humongous in real life.

Whenever they do start selling this giant iPad, it - along with the Apple watch - will be two of the most underwhelming products in Apples lineup in terms of sales.

And oh, by the way Apple - just making the same basic product thinner and/or bigger every once in a while doesn't count as ground breaking innovation.

And i will buy both. Did you do martket research or are you just making crap up?

The Bigger Picture

I agree with those who think it is quite possible Apple is working on a new 2-in-1 form factor. What has not been discussed in this regard is the work VIA and particularly AMD have been doing with regard to ambidetxrous computing. VIA has been working on Isaiah II and AMD announced first pin-compatible ARM and x86 CPUs and later their Skybridge ARM/x86 platform, which coincidentally is supposed to release in 2015.

Does this have anything to do with Apple's possible (momentary) shift to AMD GPUs?

What if the 12 inch macbook and 12 inch iPad were the same device? A hybrid?

On a separate note that concept of a 12 inch iPad next to the 13 inch macbook has the iPad with a much larger screen

I have to agree with the majority here. I don't see a big enough market to justify a "big iPad" on it's own. If it's really just the screen for or a hybrid new MacBook Air/ detachable iPad that's a different story.

If you kept your eyes and ears open, you would have noticed that Adobe just announced that it added touch interfaces for its destop apps, Photoshop and Illustrator, to run on 2-in-1 devices like the Surface Pro 3. I'm thinking the new iPad will be able to run such apps.

Indeed. But there is a crucial difference - a larger phone made sense. A larger ipad does not. Who the hell wants a 12.9inch tablet? That would be totally impractical. There is also the rumoured fanless 12" macbook air - a product which makes far more sense. Now why would Apple be working on a 12"ish MBA and a 12"ish ipad that would only end up as direct competitors ??? No siree - I say there is one product - the 12" MBA. These reports of a 12"ipad are most likely simply confusing information relating to the MBA for the ipad.

Outside chance Apple are doing the unthinkable and making a MS Surface competitor - i.e. tablet form with attachable keyboard that would explain origin of both rumoured products. But given the abject failure that is Surface, I don't think that is likely.

Well spotted buddy -- sorry for jumping the gun.

If Apple wants to truly shake up the iPad line to counter slumping sales, they should release a 4.7" & 5.5" iPod Touch. They're more iPad than iPod anyway. I think more people would buy a 5.5" iPod Touch aka iPad Nano than would buy a 12.9" iPad pro. But I like the idea of a 12.9" iPad pro as well. ;-)

nope.

Truth.

Although the iPad screen does look wider as well as taller, though it could be the POV being rendered that makes it so. The rendering seems upon first glance to be closer to a 12.9" iPad sitting next to an 11" MBA, as has been suggested before:

I think it will appear, for these reasons:

1. These is a space for these, with Final Cut Pro and other applications from Adobe.
2. It will run OSX, as it has the capability to handle touch via the trackpad on the Mac, so changing it over to a touchscreen shouldn't be that difficult.
3. It will have a detachable keyboard additional to it, like the iPad covers,,, auto on/off.
4. Some kind of thunderbolt dock for the addition of peripherals.

I guess, I think it will be like a Mac mini meets the iPad, rather than the MacBook meets the iPad.

All this on a product unannounced...

On the last earnings call Cook said Apple had "interesting" things planned for the iPad space. I doubt A8 and Touch ID qualifies as interesting.
Tim Cook often places also "incredible" in his phrases, but seldom we see something "unusual" from Apple
Edit, better version: I've lost count on "incredible"'s in Tim Cook quotes, so I find it difficult to give weight to a single "interesting" placed somewhere

Rumours going up and down and up and down...

So basically all we're getting Tuesday is an iPad Air 2 that predictably packs in an A8 chip and perhaps TouchID.

Everyone keeps saying there's no way to do the touch screen with OSX. Modbook http://www.modbook.com/modbookpro has been doing this for years. So this would not be a difficult task for Apple. If it turns out the iPad Pro is announced and it's running iOS only then it may change my decision about it.

But the problem with this idea is that it only caters to a small niche of market. The iPad is a mass-market device, as it meant to do what a majority of people use a PC for: web-browsing, social media, videos, e-mail, and some light productivity like some word-processing or making videos in iMovie. A 13" iPad would be a total waste if it's limited to that kind of usage, and I don't see how anyone would find a much better use for it over the 10" iPad.

As for a digitizer, one can only dream of Apple doing such thing. But seriously, if they do it, then it would truly mark the end of the Steve Jobs-era of Apple. :p

Who says it wont be able to do more?

Many Artists out there bought the Surface Pro line simply because it was a good drawing device. If the 13 Inch iPad had a digitizer Input device I would buy it day one.

^This

I will also buy a larger iPad on day one. Wiesenlooser has one use, I have several others. I use iDraw, CoachMe, Numbers, and a few other apps that will greatly benefit from the larger screen.

Xeyad, just because it's not for you doesn't mean it's not for anyone. And Apples 'niche' market for this one version of the iPad will be the envy of almost every other tablet maker in terms of volume and revenue.

I just don't get why anyone would need a 13" iPad. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPad, and I use it every single day, but a 13" iPad seems like an overkill for what it's capable of. Wether we like it or not, a truly productive device needs a keyboard and a mouse, and iOS apps were never designed to have a mouse.
What I bolded is nothing more than your opinion that you are masquerading as fact.

Mac OS X on the other hand wasn't designed for touch interfaces, so I don't think we'll see a 13" Macbook Air Touch either.

Many of the great iPad apps fit perfectly at 10 inches, but at freaking 13" diagonally, they'll just be way too big and don't offer extra productivity over the 10" iPad, or maybe even the iPad Mini.

I think splitscreen multitasking on iOS will be gimmicky at best, and will complicate the experience even further.
I have used split-screen on a tablet (Surface RT and Surface 2). For those of us who use our tablets for productivity (in addition to entertainment and casual uses) such a feature is very helpful.

I am quite productive on my iPad4 and having split-screen windows on it would be a welcomed addition...especially on a larger tablet.

It all comes down to one's perspective is. But those who claim that the iPad is nothing more than a toy of leisure should not stand in the way of those who use it productively.
