What was the advantage of the solid-state trackpad?

If that was a rhetorical question, I honestly don't know the answer to that either, so feel freed to elaborate. Maybe it saved some space underneath the track pad? But it's also much larger than the side buttons.

From my personal experience, the old analog trackpad had two weaknesses solved by the solid state button.

First, the analogue trackpad required different amounts of pressure depending where you clicked, so clicking in the top corner was more difficult compared to the bottom center — applicable when dragging or using a gesture. The current trackpad responds to pressure equally across the entire surface.

Second, the analogue trackpad was more prone to failure. I myself had one go bad on a new MacBook Pro that cost me almost a week of work until I received a replacement from Apple.

in the case of solid state buttons for the iPhone, the rumors suggest Apple will add increased functionality which is why this will be limited to the Pro line at first.

Just put a new chip in the iPhone 4S body, maybe extend the screen closer to the edges, maybe Touch ID in the power button. Sell it for even $1000 and I’d probably buy one.
Ok, I do like this idea. I don’t necessarily agree with the price though. Make it around $450 and you could probably sell it.

I also hope usb-c is green-lighted for the iPhone Pro’s, mainly because it will simplify travel for me with one cable for both my iPhone and iPad Pro.
You can get a very tiny USB-C to Lightning adapter for the end of your cable and travel with one now. Or use a magnetic ended cable and leave it's adapters permanently in each device.

I have one of the adapters - but because it’s so small, it often gets lost in the bottomless pit of my bag (which is a different issue I need to deal with at some point). I just end up taking a Lightning to USB-C and a full USB-C cable with me every time I travel, just to avoid the moment of worry I have when I can’t find the adapter.

Note to universe. Please give me the strength to ignore the hype this year, & stick with my 14 ProMax. Mantra: I will again be disappointed by the lack of difference between my current phone & the new one. Ignore the marketing!
