It's pretty clear that when this thing gets introduced the first gen is aimed at only 2 real categories of users:

1) Developers in this space who need to get their hands on hardware to start working on things they think consumers will want further down the road

2) Consumers with a lot of money to burn on something that isn't really consumer focused yet
When Apple has ever released such a product? Why do you think they would do it now?
The 3000$ price tag does not make any sense. There is no go-to-the-market strategy for a product that expensive, even with Apple's logo on it.

Not a big deal. WWDC is the better platform to launch an entirely new product segment that will need significant developer support to succeed.
Yes this is indeed a situation where software content needs to be developed that something like this can be used with. They previous acquired Akonia Holographics a few years ago.

Potential ‘aluminium lining’ to this:

A event in early spring for the rumoured new MacBook Air 15” + other fresh products now seems more likely than a release via Apple Newsroom.

And then next month the rumor mill will say it’s delayed until the fall. And then it will be delayed until 2024. Meanwhile no one can explain why it needs to exist other than Apple hasn’t had a major new product since the Apple Watch in 2014.

They don’t nee a media event for new products that are basically just spec bumps. Though they could announce new stuff via video and not just a press release.

Never. But I agree with OP. You have to realize this is a different kind of launch for Apple and calls for a different approach. According to Cook's comments to the press, Apple sees the AR platform as being "bigger than the iPhone" and something that we won't imagine being without in X years. So this is the beginning of a long term strategy.

This is going to launch with a very impressive UX that fascinates the world, but not a lot of ecosystem content. It'll be a pricey product, like a Mac, that is going to need to offer a strong value proposition.

This first, "Reality Pro" product is going to attract developers and creators to build compelling ecosystem, so when Apple launches the rumored lower cost version of this device, there will be a lot of consumers who will want it.

Think of it like this: The first product being launched is the "MacBook Pro" of AR devices, and in a year or two, the "MacBook" of AR will launch.

I can already see the lawyer ads. Did you use Apple's headset? You may be entitled to compensation since Aluminium leaked into people's brains causing X Y Z......

Delay, delay, delay and delay some more. Coming from a *long time* customer, Apple has become a serious disappointment machine over the past several years. I can’t remember the last time I was actually “delighted” by a product announcement, price announcement, new software release or anything else Apple. Maybe Apple Watch? That was probably the last time. Under Tim Cook, Apple really has lost its shine. It is a sad realization to have to come to terms with after all of these years.

I think Apple has it ready to introduce, but they are waiting for the time that will have the most impact. WWDC probably makes the most sense, with many sessions about the device and software — and as others have pointed out, making a big enough splash to get developers on board.

This is always the pattern. Apple leaks when it’s releasing something. Then right before the date it “gets delayed” to let people think it’s not coming. Then they release it at the original “leaked” time.

1. Leak
2. Delay
3. Release
This could be the case, as Apple does leak incorrect information to track down leakers.

OR it could be that the people like Gurman of Kuo (forget his name) are literally paid to read tea leaves and their employment is never at risk when they’re wrong and people just accept “delay”.

yawn….who cares at this point. It’s not like there will be thousands lining up to get one at 3K LOL
thousands will line up for sure - but Apple needs millions to line up to make a successful product. And that's just not going to happen at this price - and this dork factor (not many people are willing to make complete dorks out of themselves donning a headset for multiple hours a day).

Makes sense to announce it to developers first as mainstream users are going to need a lot of games, apps and content to justify spending $3k.
Yes just like they announced the DTK (Mac mini w/A12X) to test out software compatibility before the AS Macs shipped. This would be just a another DTK involving AR/VR this time with some early version of a headset they have long been working on.

Hopefully, they don't delay it too long...or else they might end up like RCA and their CED (Capacitive Electronic Disc) - a technology that was well ahead of its time when conceived, but was so costly to develop and took so long to bring to market that it eventually killed the company. It didn't help that it was more expensive than its competitors.

At this point the analysts will say outs coming out in 2030 just to cover their bases
