As much as I love the iPad... its basically a Tech Toy... and I'm pretty sure that a delay of a toy for grown-ups is the least of Japan's worries.

I'm guilty of coveting my tech possessions but this tragedy has made me take some time and realize whats more important. PEOPLE

If it takes an event such as this one to make you realise this, you need to take time out more often.

Im a miserly person in general (except when it comes to my tech toys) but after seeing the pictures of whats happened in Japan and reading this thread I decided to donate.

Im not sure what it was exactly but reading this thread made me decide to donate some money so I thank all you posters (and macrumours) for pushing me to do something worthwhile (for once). :D

(Japan doesn't need money-it has the money.

Thats wrong, Japan has the second highest finanicial debt behind Zimbabwe. It´s almost three times as high as the dept of the EU or the USA. - And these are numbers from 2009, so the cost of this week are not included.

Their Dept was at 185% of the BIP (whatever that is in english) (if no one wuld spend any money everybody in japan would have to work 1,85 years to pay back all of the countrys dept)

It may be relevant to stockholders, Japanese Apple fans and other people for their own reasons. Basically, if you don't like the headline don't read the story ;)

They only way to know if I like the headline is to read the entire story. That way I don't make presumptions about the article by the title. Something that happens here frequently. Still think it doesn't really rates as news, nor that anyone here would be overly shocked that Apple would make this move all things considered.

(Japan doesn't need money-it has the money. It needs goods to spend their money on).

Disagree. Their economy has been a shambles since the 90s. Currency deflation, the extremely high debt-to-GDP ratio (already mentioned by somebody else), and the shrinking workforce in tandem with the increasing strain on social welfare programs are all grave concerns. So no, they don't really have the money either.

That's true. But personal debt? The Japanese don't really have that at all. There's a big difference between financial debt and personal debt!

Also, if Japan defaults, that means they default on themselves: The savings rate has lent the country the money.

The point being, common people have money, though the country is broke. This is well known. Giving people who have savings money won't do much as there's not enough to spend it on. Adding more money to Japan will make prices only more expensive-which isn't good, since if you know much about Japan, you'd know its too expensive as is, and a good reason its in so much debt is trying to sustain an unsustainable bubble for what is currently a third decade. If you consider PPP, Japan is the 24th richest country in the world-it'd be richer, but everything there is too darned expensive as is.

If everyone donated a gallon of refined gas and sent a tanker full of it to Japan, that would do a lot of help. Sending money to buy gas? Not so much. Any money you send to Japan, anyway, would probably be used to pay down the financial debt anyway.

Don't be so self deprecating man, glad to hear you helped out those good folks. Stay well

So you think Macrumors (an Apple rumors and news site) should have neglected to post the story because it's unsurprising news? I guess they don't need to post about the iPhone 5 at WWDC this year either

If you want to see what its deflating against, check out the insane valuations of Japan during the 1980s. Heck, even after deflating 99%, Japanese real estate is still barely cheaper than Moscow.

Now that might sound insane to anyone normal, to think an economy can deflate by some measures 99% and still have room to go, but it does make a degree of sense if you look at what occurred in Japan BEFORE the collapse.

The money is there, the economy is not. There's a huge disconnect. Imports in Japan aren't deflationary, only Japanese assets are.

No, 100% goes to the red cross.

"Donation amounts range from $5 to $200, and the entire amount is sent to the American Red Cross."

okay so the donation money is not really money that apple is giving but that people are giving. Um so what money is apple giving out of it's own pocket?

Apple should donate lots of money as well give out free iPad 2. Neither are going to happen unfortunately.

Free iPad 2? Really? To who? Oh, so sorry to hear your family died, but here, have a free tech toy! C'mon, let's be real here.

Apple's a private corporation made up of thousands of employees, many of whom, I'm sure, are giving money to Red Cross or other relief organizations.

As a corporation, the reports have shown that they are certainly taking a hit by allowing people to bunker at Apple Stores, providing free connectivity services so people can contact their families, and buying food and water for people. They are also pledging to reimburse the cost of travel and hotel stays for employees and family members.

This is in good taste from Apple IMO.

Its heartwrenching seeing what is going on in Japan and this news may seem trivial (or obvious to some) but it reeks of respect for the situation to me.

Can you imagine people lining up outside the Apple Store for their iPad while worrying about a radiation cloud blowing down from Fukushima? Sheesh. Or spending money on an iPad when you may need it for food and supplies? Or not even have electricity to charge it? What's happening there is terrible but it makes me realize how fortunate I am.

Please contribute to the America Red Cross relief fund on iTunes or Amazon if you are able to!

I thought the exact thing; HOWEVER, hyper deconstruction of someone's post (being heartfelt and well intended) isnt cool under these circumstances.

That's one way to look at it. Although the original post would be considered insulting by many people, and that is probably not cool under these circumstances either.

will the disaster affect Apple's ability to keep manufacturing iPads?
i'm assuming there's like a 2-3 month delay anyway from when they're made and when they actually show up in stores....?

There shouldn't much much of a delay, if any. Most of the parts for iPad are manufactured & assembled in China. As far as I've heard, Toshiba had started up many of its tech factories. Not sure if any of these factories make iPad parts.

I'm actually surprised at what my family and friends there have been doing. Most of them basically spent the night at their offices, went to work the next day, and tried to convince me that it's business as usual. There's a huge difference between the experience of those in the North near Sendai and Fukushima, and those outside of that area. There are also a lot of Japanese downplaying events in Fukushima. I would delay the launch as well, but there are a lot of people there doing stuff many of us can't imagine.

This would be news, how? I mean look a the country. Heartbreaking. Does anyone really think they give a crap about the iPad 2 showing up right now?

Yeah, in the scale of things the announcement is more like a slap in the face. If they cared about anything other than pushing a few more units of a toy they would strip Jobs of a couple of his billions and donate it to a disaster relief fund. Now that would be newsworthy!

This is bad news! I am in Japan and was waiting to get the iPad 2!!

Doh.

My local KFC was shut down today so I couldn't get a chicken sandwich for lunch. That's when I knew things were really abnormal.
