How are they so far behind the competition? What is the competition doing that’s so earth shattering it would make one sell their iPhone for something else? Understanding this is subjective topic.
You are conflating two separate issues. Fortunately Gemini, Alexa and Chat-GPT are all available as apps on the iPhone so we don’t need to switch. The issue here is the lack of advanced AI functionality in Siri.

Some of the AI features I’ve seen like conversational AI, circle to search and the ability to do multiple cross-app actions in one go look very useful.

Those features would be a lot more useful to me that a better camera.

See. I’ll take a better camera any day and twice on Sunday - if I had to prioritize what I want first.

Every single AI company is actually wildly undervalued. Compared to Apple, OpenAI is worth easily 500 times maybe 1,000 times what Apple is worth. That’s just in the next decade. In 15 years OpenAI will be worth 1 million times what Apple could ever hope to be.

AGI and ASI has essentially infinite value to humanity. It’s essentially the tree of life or the holy grail. Whatever mythical thing you want to attach it to, it’s that in value. It will replace all human jobs, it will cure all diseases, it will solve problems and make scientific discoveries and theories we couldn’t comprehend.

For example, Einstein made multiple theories that science could not empirical prove for about 100 years after he made them. Now imagine the theories AI will make that won’t be able to immediately be proven experimentally, but nevertheless, be true? It will be unimaginable. We will also trust they’re true because it will become clear that it’s highly accurate at theory accuracy.

It’s like if you could copy human intelligence millions and billions of times and have that shoved into a number of large data centers working 24/7 on certain tasks. The advancement will be unreal. The only things getting in the way will be physical experimentation and human society. We will slow it, but even still, it will be unbelievable advancement.

I get that it’s still very hard for a lot of people to accept or believe, but I’d say by this time next year people will finally start understanding what’s going to happen. Because this year a lot of AI agents will be starting to come online which will really get people to understand that this **** is real.
the year they turned skynet online eh? lol

ChatGPT got pwned by DeepSeek earlier this year and people are still acting like LLM AI is difficult to produce? It's not. All kinds of companies have their own LLM AI programs. With AI, the dirty little secret is that it's the TRAINING DATA that's actually important. You know, all the stuff that the companies programming the LLM AI apps didn't actually produce themselves.

I am in the kitchen finishing setting up the coffee machine. I speak into my watch with the iPhone on the counter behind me and say "Siri set an eleven minute and fifteen second timer". The watch responds and even the iPhone sometimes responds that the timer is set for the stipulated time. The timer runs-out while I am reading the forums in the office and I go into the kitchen just as the coffee machine chirps that it is done brewing. I take the fresh cup of the morning coffee into my wife in the bedroom.

Siri does this very elementary task well. When I ask for directions from where I am to a location in another state (I drive the route at least once a year for the last dozen years and sometimes twice.) the answer is NOT the preferred route. There is no way to "grab" the route line and go a different way.

So the tens of thousands of dollars of my latest Apple hardware still seem to have an Achilles Heel called Siri.

Siri for me has not evolved since day one as the two scenarios above have been done since "Siri" day one with the same results.

I do NOT buy Apple's latest and greatest equipment because of Siri but in spite of Siri.

YMMV

My use of Siri continues to be less. There are areas that Siri does OK. One turn or off a HomeKit device. Even that, the HomeKit app just works. Search is now almost exclusively ChatGPT. ChatGPT voice commands work very well. Apple can take all the time they need on Siri. Even remove Siri all will be still be good.

Seems Apple has been doing this a lot lately. Their keynotes are filled with stuff that's all show now, promise for later, then underdeliver.

Based on last quarter’s disastrous earnings report and being the only company in the Magnificent 7 underperforming, how will Apple ever recover from this AI crisis Gurman is reporting?
Apple will take some hits in the press in the short term. But the vast majority of people right now in both the Apple and Android ecosystems have seen and experienced enough of on device AI to all give a collective yawn. No one is really impressed, no one really cares except for the tech press or tech geeks always clamoring for the cutting edge. Google’s Gemini can only run on the Samsung Galaxy 25 and top end Google phone and even then is only doing what Apple Intelligence is doing now.

It is impossible to do ChatGPT or DeepSeek like conversational AI on device. I read somewhere that someone had to spin up a cloud instance that consisted of over 100 AMD CPU cores, over 200 AMD GPU cores and over 100 gigs of RAM just to run DeepSeek R1 personally. You can also find online the guy who clustered together 8 M4 Mac Mini’s to run the entire DeepSeek R1 model….albeit very slowly.

This is the challenge facing Apple and Google. How to shrink these massive LLMs down to something that can be run on device. Adding to Apple’s challenge is how to make a MORE useful and SAFER AI than OpenAI, Grok or DeepSeek. Not to mention how to make Apples LLM an enhancement across an entire platform of various devices and applications and not just bolting on a generic LLM just to satisfy an ignorant tech press and geek base.

Apparently the new Alexa can walk you through how to bake a cake, Siri can barely turn off my bedroom light. Guess I’ll wait until iOS 20.5.
LOL….you mean Alexa + ….the $20 per month Anthropic add on to regular stupid Alexa ? I mean…that’s what Apple is doing right now with ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence….for free !

Plus as an Amazon product you know that privacy and security are baked right into that monthly subscription to your cake recipe reciter !

No the new Alexa is categorically different than the pathetically bad ChatGPT integration. Apple’s ChatGPT integration is using older models and it isn’t really integration. You ask Siri a question and it doesn’t know most questions you ask and then it very very slowly sends off a query to an old model of ChatGPT which is much weaker and slower. The entire process and integration is absolutely garbage. It’s far far faster and better to simply open the ChatGPT app and ask the good model.

The Alexa integration with Claude will absolutely wipe the floor with ChatGPT integration in iOS. Alexa is actually going to be using it, fully. Actually direct integration. It’s like if Siri stopped being Siri and was just simply ChatGPT..that’s what Alexa is going to be except with Claude. And by the way it’s a free included feature for Prime subscribers.

This is what I keep going back to. People keep saying Apple is behind but like with what exactly? Actual and potential future delays are bad but far from the fatality forum users are making it out to be.

Is that supposed to be a defense of what Tesla has pushed out? But it never had any other type of driving assist just slam the brakes for no reason. Tesla is unusable.

Clearly it's not unusable since just 5 seconds on The Internet will show you a multitude of examples of people using it.

"Apple delays..." is becoming business-as-usual for Cuprtino when it comes to its 'AI' offerings. Not only were they late to the game, but their catch-up execution is just pathetic at this point.

[load of stuff, over and over]
Dude, nobody doubts that actual AI would indeed be world changing like the agricultural or industrial revolutions (only much faster), though not necessarily in a good way (frankly I think Skynet is more likely than a Culture Mind). What people doubt is that this technology will be that technology.

The source of disagreement, I think, is the faith you have in LLMs to advance that far (by 2027, apparently) while many experts say the technology is plateauing and may not have much potential left. You keep saying it's a fact, which is, frankly, a stupid thing to say. It's a prediction about the future, it's not a fact.

I believe that the Apple model is based upon there being some user privacy. When one steps off the Apple platform to some other non-Apple source, your privacy is GONE.

The odds of your personal data being secure is about as good as playing Russian roulette with a fully loaded semi automatic pistol.
