I wonder if the jailbreak community will be able to amend Airprint. It's odd that some apps can print to network printers and that Apple can't simply incorporate those aspects in their system wide Airprint feature (perhaps they have good reason though, nevertheless it would be nice to integrate Airprint with the Eurosmartz features and not have to go through the encumbursomeness of those apps).

my conspiracy thought...

I'm betting that HP did an under the table deal with Apple to not include AirPrint for other devices until after christmas so that HP printers with ePrint would be high sellers for the holidays.

There is simply no way that compatibility with normal printers and print servers isn't in its way. All these supposed enterprise customers ( what was the announcement the other day.. one business made and order for 4500 of them? ) will simply not let this happen. Apple isn't going to alienate them.

What a paperless office will look like. Too bad it's still messy!

Yeah. That would be almost as crazy as dropping xserve's with no notice and no announced upgrade and support path.

Oh, wait....

This is a perfect example of why I have a HATRED of Windows. I'm not going to the da*mn registry and screwing around with a bunch of f***n dll's and all that crap...

The Mac OS may not be perfect, and I'm sure the Linux geeks think they're the S**t, but after years of using Apple's products and having to provide troubleshooting and support for my friend's and colleague's Windows machines, I'LL TAKE A MAC EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR!!!!

Steve Jobs just phoned...he said you can have your brain back - he's done washing it for you...!

p.s. He asks if you could please remove your nose from his ass !!

Interesting as it works for me

This is interesting as it works quite well on my 4.2 GM with Windows 7 64 bit and a samsung laser printer. The fact a user actually has to setup sharing, particularly with Windows, may have caused Apple to hold on this feature. Apple is all about simplicity, and using control panels and working with sharing isn't very simple. They probably should build a server type program into iTunes to setup the feature for a user adding to the simplicity.

From 9to5Mac.com:

A MacForums member posted this purported email exchange with the Apple CEO:

Good Morning, Mr. Jobs: As a release-day purchaser of an iPad, I was elated when you revealed iOS 4.2 would support AirPrint. Now comes reports AirPrint support has been pulled from 4.2. Between announcements/assurances of the white iPhone, and now the pulling of AirPrint, is Apple going to lose credibility and become known for announcing “vaporware”? Respectfully, <redacted>

El Jobs:

AirPrint has not been pulled. Don’t believe everything you read.

Of course there is significant room for interpretation there. Being pulled and being able to only use certain HP printers are two separate things which Jobs doesn’t delineate. We should know more by Friday, right?

Whether AirPrint has been pulled is not in question/discussion. Printing via Macs and PCs is what is being debated. So Steve is technically correct.

...I set up an email address called "homeprint@________.com", then set up the email client on my home computer to check that email address. When an email comes in with an attachment, Mail copies the attachment into a folder on my computer. That folder has a folder action that opens file, prints it, then deletes it...

Off topic but I'd be curious to see (read: interested in having a copy of) your Applescript (or Automator script or whatever you use)! :)

Apple Printer?

Wonder what the chances are of Apple coming out with a printer again but one that works with all the Apple products and is supported by Apple.

Maybe Apple should just support a few popular printers instead of canning it altogether, unless they are coming out with a printer or some new patented way to print to any printer maybe through Mobile Me.

I doubt it. Since Apple seems to want to put everything in the cloud, it wouldn't make sense to have something that makes physical copies. Besides, Apple would probably say that printers aren't "sexy" enough.

I added a column for router - i suspect some problems may be caused by ports not getting set up right or something.

Good idea. Thanks for adding it. I also added a column for if it worked before.

And about those emails that someone supposedly posted - AirPrint hasn't been pulled. AirPrint exists but it doesn't support non-AirPrint devices.

Mmmm. Nope. Printed to a Xerox WCP7665 this morning with the latest iOS and OS X builds, using Xerox's hardly ever updated drivers (drivers that don't show all capabilities in 64 bit mode unless you switch to 32 bit mode in the host app!) and I can STILL print two sided to it! And of course my Brother printer at home too, which has native OS X support. I think it's a misnomer to say "non-Airprint" device, if it's got a driver for OS X (or even Windows) it's an Airprint compatible device. Now, if you want to print without a host computer sharing out the printer then you'll need a native Airprint printer, like HP is sellling.

Maybe when Steve gets up today we'll get one of his world famous "Don't get your panties in a wad. Everything will be OK" emails.

See, not to worry! Close enough to what I said he would reply.

I've got the same installs of OS X, iOS, and iTunes as you and I cannot print to my network HP printer or my wireless Canon. Either Apple removed support out of 10.6.5 and not everyone running the betas is experiencing it or something didn't get installed right. It worked for me right up to installing the latest beta.

Calling something "non-AirPrint" isn't a misnomer, it's likely going to be the truth.

Your mad at Windows because it offers a way to get something which Apple removed? Shouldnt you be mad at Apple? Also the solution offered didn't require registry editing. The terminal is present on OS X for power users. Ive had to use it to repair file permissions. Your just a dumb user who doesnt seem to understand certain features of your OS.

Ouch! Okay, so I may not be a power user, programmer, or developer, but I can run circles around folks when it comes to Avid and now Audition.

My point is, the Apple products I purchased have always worked fantastic for me RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. No terminal, no jailbreaks, not a lot of extra utilities or 3rd party stuff. I just use the devices the way you're supposed to and I get a lot of joy out of them. We bought a new Epson Scanner/Printer and my Mac recognized it and was wirelessly printing and scanning within seconds. With Windows it just looks like a lot of frustration any time you want to do something.

To say that Airprint is a highly anticipated feature is an understatement, but I'm in the camp that would rather wait for Apple to get it to work correctly right out of the box, instead of having to mess with it or the terminal or a jailbreak or whatever...

Call me a sheep, or a fanboy (by the way, its NOT spelled fan-boi) or what have you, but my Apple gear works and keeps working just fine for me.

That's why these are betas. Is this what happens when betas are available for the low price of $100 a year? The sky is falling!!! No, file a bug report....

Wireless Ready Printers?

I'm not too familiar with AirPrint either before or after this announcement. I have a wireless ready Kodak printer. It's directly on the network, not connected to any computer. Will AirPrint work (or would it have worked prior to this announcement)? All the language I'm reading seems to specify that printers connected to a Mac or PC are no longer supported. Not sure regarding my set-up, though.

Thanks in advance...
