HP printers. Right... A lot of companies build their workflows around HP printers. For example, Troy Printers are built on top of HP and are used to print cheques secured with magnetic MICR toner.

@retroneo: You can continue to believe rumour sites like this one but don't forget that there is no Verizon iPhone even though it has been talked to death in supposed "credible" rumours from 2007 onward. If it was delayed or cancelled, Apple would have removed referenced to it from their 4.2 site as it is scheduled for release some time this week.

Yes I know big companies use them that is why big companies pay me the big bucks to trouble shoot them. You obviously know nothing about HP printers, their crappy drivers, especially if its an all in one unit that is a bit older, or their constant need of firmware updates.

Like I said before, if its a true rumor, and its because of compatibility issues, my bet is that it has to do with HP printers.

Let it go. Save some trees.

The point of things like iPad is the device is portable and prevents the need for printing anything. I'm glad they dropped the feature. Stop printing things. There is nearly no reason to do it anymore. If you are printing, your process is wrong. Re-evaluate! Challenge your company to reduce paper waste.

LOL @ post

Potentially upset

If true, I will be upset. If untrue, I'd like the name of this alleged developer so I can avoid his apps.

wow, i was going to buy a new kodak printer compatible with this function.

Gotta say Apple is starting to drop major balls and be problematic. Hell, the iphone has a crappy email app which gets itself beaten hands down by the blackberry app. Apple hardly holds any emails on it.

If an iPad needs a compatible printer to print, printing won't really be of any benefit for quite a while until everyone has one of them.

The most important thing (to me) was that you could do it through a PC or Mac!

So I guess the letter I got from my insurance company today via email that I need to print, sign, and send back is unnecessary now because my "process is wrong". Give me a break. You go save the planet, and I'll print what I need to print, when I need to print.

Hello? Bubble Wrap your iPad and send it to them. They can then scan the screen and send it back to you.

I don't know why so many people insist on destroying the planet.

If it's true (that's *IF*) - I'm sure, soon afterward, there'll be plenty of posts on here explaining how it was the very best decision Apple could have made and it's unrealistic that anyone would expect anything different. :D

I would say their process is wrong. Progressive has e-signature for almost everything. Isn't it a pain to have to print and mail? Multiply that by hundreds of thousands of customers. Such a waste. Demand better from this company.

And since they're dragging you to a stationary device to print that has to be plugged in, might as well fire up your computer, doesn't make much difference printing from it vs. directly from an iOS device.

Thanks a lot, developers...

You were printing the wrong way.

Do you literally mean that the iPhone holds only a few messages, or am I misunderstanding? You can increase that number if so.

I wonder what is NEXT........I/O ports? Click Wheels?

Think they're dying? See 6th gen Nano or 4th gen iPod Touch.
Think they're living? See 7th gen Classic and 4th gen Shuffle.
The Click Wheel's fate is up in the air, and it's unfortunate.

Considering where the message was posted, the ADC iOS 4.2 Beta forum (that's under still under NDA, BTW), he probably contacted ADC Support.

However, I'm skeptical that even ADC Support would know at this point.

ADC would not be authorized to make such responses, without explicit authorization. I used to be on the receiving end of those Developer Support questions and such an issue would never be filtered out to then be prematurely broadcast to the globe.

that sucks

This seems typical of Apple, if they can't get it right, don't offer it. I hope they come out with it soon. It is interesting how they have been delaying MacOS 10.6.5 and iOS 4.2, maybe they just can't seem to get the bugs out...

So you'd prefer them to release the feature, never mind the bugs, like many other companies do?
And I have no functionality problem at all with the mail app in my iPod Touch.

Umm just figure I would point out to you that hard copies (print outs) have been shown in multiple studies to be easier on the eyes and you can read it faster than off a screen.

Uh, what about bank deposit slips? What about a letter to my grandmother who doesn't own a computer, let alone know how to use email? Etc. While there are plenty of things that we can avoid printing, there are still plenty of things that simply need to be printed. Trying to omit printing altogether from a "workflow" is potentially as big an error, or bigger, as insisting on having everything in hardcopy.

To be fair, why not just sign on your iPad, take a screen shot then email that back to them? ;)

*********

On the topic of the thread, I really don't understand what the problem is. I have had printing from my iPad from very shortly after getting it. How, you ask?

I set up an email address called "homeprint@________.com", then set up the email client on my home computer to check that email address. When an email comes in with an attachment, Mail copies the attachment into a folder on my computer. That folder has a folder action that opens file, prints it, then deletes it. While, in principle, this would work with any supported file format, in practice, I always send PDFs. As all of the iWork apps on the iPad have PDF export options, this is a very painless method, with virtually 100% reliability.

So, if I've been able to do this essentially from day one, why can't Apple get it done?!

I'm pleased apple have the balls to hold back then something doesn't work
Saves me pulling my hair out trying to get it to work

I'm sure you lot would go mental if apple knowingly released unfinished software

It´s funny cause Apple ist testing and testing things to make a difference with their magical and revolutionary products and software, but it seems that when they reached some point in the size of their company they face the same issues like microsoft or others.

Normally they don´t care about faulty software so much cause when people are concerning about issues then the response from apple will be it´s the users fold or don´t do it ...... and a lot of users are so happy and will say that they don´t need the features anyway.....
