Do I need to say why that's a rather silly thing to say on here?

No, you didn't even need this post ^.

Some people need reminding. Most people here are adults that know once a rumor comes in, its best to use logic regarding where it probably originated.

However, the very vocal section of this site is age 10 - 13, and they wouldn't/couldn't possibly respond appropriately to any rumor.

wow, i was going to buy a new kodak printer compatible with this function.

Gotta say Apple is starting to drop major balls and be problematic. Hell, the iphone has a crappy email app which gets itself beaten hands down by the blackberry app. Apple hardly holds any emails on it.

Stinks about the printing, but I will put the iPhone email client up against any other mobile device.

This seems typical of Apple, if they can't get it right, don't offer it. I hope they come out with it soon. It is interesting how they have been delaying MacOS 10.6.5 and iOS 4.2, maybe they just can't seem to get the bugs out...

So you'd prefer them to release the feature, never mind the bugs, like many other companies do?
And I have no functionality problem at all with the mail app in my iPod Touch.

This x 1000000. Get it right, or don't release it to the public. The reason for me to switch to mac was because I don't want to have to deal with buggy "features" that only work 50% of the time.

Uh, what about bank deposit slips? What about a letter to my grandmother who doesn't own a computer, let alone know how to use email? Etc. While there are plenty of things that we can avoid printing, there are still plenty of things that simply need to be printed. Trying to omit printing altogether from a "workflow" is potentially as big an error, or bigger, as insisting on having everything in hardcopy.

You have to admit, though, that needs for printed hard-copies are getting few and far in between. Nowadays you don't even need a printed boarding pass on some airlines, just show them the barcode on your iPhone and you're good to go (e.g. United Airlines).

I definitely won't miss having to print stuff in the not too distant future. Save money on those expensive cartridges (reduces terror threat too ;)), etc.

There hasn't been a need for printing for almost 10 years. We just continue to do so.

Not saying there is anything wrong with that at all. We just don't have to, as so many people pretend.

I found a way to use the AirPrint without Apple's support & iTunes 10.1; (PC only)

1. Extract AirPrint.exe/libairprint.dll/XpdfPrint.dll from iTunes 10.1 beta 2.
2. Copy the files to Program Files(x86)/AirPrint/***
3. Run a command: "sc create c:/Program Files(x86)/AirPrint/AirPrint.exe"
4. Reboot
5. Share a printer.
6. Print from your iDevices with iOS 4.2 :D

This is a perfect example of why I have a HATRED of Windows. I'm not going to the da*mn registry and screwing around with a bunch of f***n dll's and all that crap...

The Mac OS may not be perfect, and I'm sure the Linux geeks think they're the S**t, but after years of using Apple's products and having to provide troubleshooting and support for my friend's and colleague's Windows machines, I'LL TAKE A MAC EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR!!!!

This may be something as simple, but as disappointing, as they can't get the feature working well enough to release it in time for the promised November launch of iOS 4.2 in which case you would likely see the feature return in the near future, perhaps as soon as OS X 10.6.6 due no later than mid-Jan for the launch of the Mac AppStore. I doubt Steve himself promised this feature on stage only to pull it with mear days to go to hold it for iOS 5.0... it was pulled because it just didn't work well enough in testing.

The point of things like iPad is the device is portable and prevents the need for printing anything. I'm glad they dropped the feature. Stop printing things. There is nearly no reason to do it anymore. If you are printing, your process is wrong. Re-evaluate! Challenge your company to reduce paper waste.

With all due respect, that is a ridiculous statement. Try handing your iPad to the gate agent when you're trying to board a plane. Or, try handing your iPad to someone when you go some event that requires printed tickets. Or try giving your grandmother directions to get home that she can take with her ON YOUR IPAD.

I personally don't care too much about printing from the iPad/iPhone. But that is just me - I can see that it might be useful to many people.

What I would care way more about is, the ability to read and write from any application to and from my dropbox folder. I rarely have the need to print while on the go, but editing some stuff in pages or just plain text editor would be great and sync it automatically through dropbox across all my machines. That would be true living in the cloud (with the offline access of dropbox, since not everywhere I go there is network) where it no longer matters where you are and on which device you work. This is a MUST for me (and printing is a 'would be nice' for me)

But hell, they are getting everybody excited about printing and then they limit support to special printers? Hope this is only a temporary pull (to get 4.2 out of the door without delay) with an update coming out in 1-2 weeks to support it.

Stop listening to rumors. It's not canceled, but is delayed.

No, it's cancelled.

That is stupid. You clearly do not fly. That alone requires me to print something. You clearly don't go to any events, tickets are often printed. You clearly never had to walk into a place and hand a resume over ... again, your narrow minded thinking makes me think you live under a rock, are too young to understand why a printer is still necessary today, and are likely not yet at a point in your life where you've needed to print something more important than the latest cheat codes.

I can only imagine the AirPrint, given multiple printer drivers, has been a programming nightmare. That having been said, this will definitely give fuel to those who argue about the impaired functionality of the iPad.

In addition, it deals another blow to Steve's credibility. Between the white iPhone and delayed print function on the iPad, is Apple becoming a "vaporware" company?

You need to drop your windows hatred and re read the post. There is NO mention of anything related to the registry or anything about "a bunch of f***n dll's and all that crap."

You copy 3 files to a directory
run one command line command
reboot and share your printer.....

This is a hack , a workaround. IF Apple intended for us to do this there would be a installer that would do these steps for you.

come on....there are many things one might have issues with Windows and there are places were the Mac is better, but this type of histeria does no one any good.

May they have removed it in the very last version, but it still works in iOS 4.2 GM and Mac OS X 10.6.5 10H574. It's really strange that it works in the very last betas/deltas and not in the final version...

It doesn't work in that beta. I tried it last night. I confirmed it in the original thread that was merged with this (which no one read).

I was under the impression that the wireless printing was just through a networked printer. With the revelation that it was going to require Snow Leopard to work kills that for me anyway. Guess I'll be buying another printer.

I was excited about AirPrint. It would make my iPod touch do more things that y computer does. Instead of using my Mac to print all the time, I can use my iPod. I hope they fix it, and release it in the near future.

Rediculous

They should have some form of basic printing. There is no need to support all possible printers. Any specialty support such as for my label printer should be handled by me, the user, with an installer from the printer vendor and actually it should simply go on the attached computer, not the iOS device.

iOS needs printing. Print anywhere to anything in some form.

Originally I thought it would require special printers to use it anyways. So I already had this reaction months ago. In a few months, you will calm down too. 10 years from now, you won't even remember this.

...It's ridiculous that a $800 computer that is over 50 times as fast as my first Mac can't print.

Spending $800 in a device doesn't make it a computer. This is why I don't have an iPad. As cool as they are (I've played with them a lot and they are wonderful) I need a real computer.
