“For all that we’ve been able to achieve while many of us have been separated, the truth is that there has been something essential missing from this past year: each other,” he said. “Video conference calling has narrowed the distance between us, to be sure, but there are things it simply cannot replicate.”

Yeah, the devices at the very core of our business aren't sufficient for us to run a business.

This is bloody laughable.

Their response to this has been typically corporate. The people have spoken and they told Apple they don't need to return to the outdated model of being cooped up in an office everyday with long periods of travel at either end. Most people are happy to communicate via all of the tools we available to us today. The large company I work in saw an INCREASE in productivity through working from home. It was so apparent they cant ignore it.

What are you on about 'everything is back to normal'??

Yes our UK vaccination program has gone very well however there are still over 30k people a day testing positive for Covid, and a lot of the forward thinking companies here have changed the way they work forever.

I work for a very well known company and we have moved to a model where we can work from home the majority of the time and just visit the offices on those occasions where we need to collaborate on something.

Apple's stance on this is very backward and at odds with the company they project themselves to be. If they truly cared about wellbeing and the environment they wouldn't want to bring in this 3 day a week minimum model. Apple are very good at appearing to care.
who cares if people are still testing positive? the chances of you dying while vaccinated are slmost zero. move on already

Haha move on already. Yeah sure I'll phone someone and ask them to cancel the global pandemic for you.

I think you are forgetting Long Covid (which you will hear a LOT about over the next 5-10 years) and the fact that the virus regularly mutates into different variants.

Luckily I work for a modern progressive company so Apple's out of date, stuck in the past work culture doesn't affect me.

First, it was September... then October, and now January. Can’t even work 3 days a week inside the office. Pathetic!

It cost Apple $5 billion dollars for Apple to build the (Spaceship) HQ and now it’s just sitting there with no employees working inside the building.

What about the retail employees? How come they're still obligated to work inside the stores??

Pathetic?

Okay, they must immediately return to campus and risk getting COVID on-campus on en route, because the world can't function if Apple employees do not work on campus (maybe for some years) till this dies down?

So what if the world does not see new iPhones and iPads and wrist bands and wrist band and cases in new colors and Macs and MacBooks for a few years even? Employees do not need to risk their lives to satisfy the new device itch of the world.

the virus will mutate forever. its endemic. wild animals are testing positive. what youre implying is the vaccines dont work (which is fuel for the anti vaxxers) and you never want societies to return to normal

No, you are wrong. I am implying that variants may (and probably will) render existing vaccines useless. Then during that time where new vaccine research is needed we will be back to increased deaths and lockdowns while they get things under control.

I am also implying that vaccines won't stop you suffering the effects of Long Covid which can give you all kinds of lifelong problems.

As much as you don't want there to be a global pandemic, and as much as you want to ignore it and pretend things are normal, they are not unfortunately.

Tim doesn't say that the jobs can't be done remotely. He says that video calls cannot replicate an office - and I agree with that.
Really?? Lol, if the difference to being creative & making products or curating services requires 4 walls and a roof,..than you probably shouldn't be in that job.

You can be just as creative working remotely. Tim has a beautiful suite of an office, a security detail, car driver to work, not to mention a multi million dollar wage!,..Maybe provide the same luxury to your co-workers?

Tell that to the friends and family of the 620,000+ that have already died, and the 1,000 that are dying every day.

He said vaccinated. What happened prevaccine is irrelevant.

Even health officials will tell you now it’s basically a pandemic of the unvaccinated. The people too stupid to get a shot mainly. The only concern I have at this point are the kids and that problem is solved when vaccines are approved for them in a few months.

Good for the employees.
Bunch of pansies, get back to work, the wheels of economies need to turn. Stop paying people to be at home, they will soon change their minds about going to work. Just think about all the businesses that rely on people going to work, small coffee shops, restaurants and even eventually large manufacturing such as cars as they won't be needed because people are using COVID as an excuse to stay at home. The answer is to get the world vaccinated as quickly as possible.

I am now thinking that this discussion will soon have to be migrated to the Political Social Religious section. 😂

Believe me, they really want people back. These corps with big campuses are actually in trouble now. Employees are very hesitant to return even when govt guidance says it's safe, and companies that previously said no to permanent remote work are having to bend that more and more because they realize people will quit. Where I work, you can optionally return, yet few have, and for some reason absolutely 0 managers, leads, or other high-ranking people are back.

The sad truth I've learned working in this area and knowing many who do is, they want people physically there so they can make sure they work. Same reason they do open offices. Maybe Apple also has one good partial reason, secrecy.

Just to add to your comment, what if a company forced an individual back against their will and then the suffered from Long Covid or worse still, died? I bet Lawyers are already mapping out all of those potential compensation claims that will probably become a huge thing over the coming years.

As an example, I can do my job perfectly, in fact better, from home. If I worked for a backward thinking company like Apple who forced me to sit in their office to do exactly the same thing and I became ill, the company are at fault. I would be able to prove that my productivity is better from home and their enforcement of location was unreasonable and caused personal health problems.

It's going to be interesting.

There's this and the inevitable problem they'll have with employees who refused to get vaccinated and thus are prohibited from returning (since they require vaccination to return). When they go no-remote, what happens to those employees? I don't know if they can fire them, and they probably don't even want to. They've given no answers. I suspect they'll be quietly allowed to work remotely, with a pay cut.

I will never understand how Americans handling this pandemic lol.
Yes you afraid of the virus but you came up with millions of conspiracies, refuse to face-covering and so on.
Yes you afraid of the potential of getting infected by going to workplaces but you have no problem of going to parties.

Points being made, however judging from iOS 15, I doubt many Apple employees do their works better remotely like you...
