Darn those Chinese

First it's stuffed toys at Wal-Mart that say "I hate you" to your kids... then it's melamine in pet food and baby formula... now it's stinky Mac Pros that cause cancer.

Anyone else see a pattern here that goes beyond incompetence and bad quality control?

If only Apple's beyond-premium cost was because they were made in the USA...

I have a February 2008 eight-core machine (I ordered it as soon as they announced it) and have not noticed any smell emanating from it.

im gladd to see people houding electronics manufacturers about the fumes their products emit, but apple is a funny company to pick on because apple has led the way in reducing the toxic **** used in electronics. even though apple takes these measures i believe the french guy and say theres still more work to be done. NO MORE LAPTOP CANCER FARTS

ok, I never had a computer smell unless a part burned up or it overheated.

Interesting, what about all those laser printers where the dust and fumes let out is worse than smoking a cigarette (several articles on that). Yet we still have thousands of laser printers in homes and offices.

In this country (Denmark), for one, you're not allowed to have a laser printer in the same room as the room you work in. In many places the "printer room" is even ventilated by a fan to the outside.
My private laser printer isn't even close to constant "on", but is turned on when I need to print, otherwise it's shut off. It's in a closed cabinet in a room where neither of us (we're two) stay for long. So, yes, what about them?

Apple hasn't lead in anything relating to "reducing toxics" or being "green". What gave you that idea?

This story is no surprise. Of course Apple denies it. They'll continue to deny it, and then will release a fix to a problem they say doesn't exist. The fix won't actually fix it though. This scenario is starting to sound familiar...like the missing key press on the MBPs...

Despite some of the humorous posts, I gotta tell you that I just stopped cold when I read this (and felt compelled to register/reply). Three weeks ago, while driving home with my brand new MP, I could hardly breath, and in fact, thought something had either spilled in the car, or I had left some wet gym clothes that soured badly.

Unpacking, the intense odor hit me so hard, I contemplated calling the store to see if they had had any serious water, or fire/chemical damage. I first thought the box had absorbed something while in storage or transit.

By the next day, the odor had permeated the house to the point of discomfort. I removed the box which seemed to help, and then it gradually went away.

I suppose if this was a typical electronic emission that would be one thing, but for someone else to write about this on the other side of the globe, kind of freaks me out right now.
