Seriously, the college kids and their teachers are still heavily using laptops as their go to machines. A multitasking windowing OS, lots of production applications, highly configurable memory and storage, keyboards, mouse/touchpad, headphone port, SD card slots, various USB ports - that's appealing for folks that need to get things done - teach, do research, or just get a degree.

Looks like. Two of mine doing college started out with tablets and both are using laptops at present.

The problem with the faster horse/car analogy is it doesn't hold up when what you've already got is better suited to the job.

If you race in the kentucky Derby or The Grand National a "faster horse" is exactly what you need regardless of car manufacturing. Similarly if you make mobile computers then improving laptops should be your priority not introducing a new tier of device and saying "well it's good enough for some people".

I think the analogy holds up remarkably well, even the way you extended it. The Kentucky Derby is still around, as a side show. Very few people are riding a horse to work or to the shops these days, and almost everybody is driving a car (including Kentucky Derby jockeys). Riding horses is a pastime, or specialist pursuit, and will likely remain so for a long time. Traditional (mouse and keyboard) computers are headed the same way. Nobody is telling you to stop using them, and Apple doesn't require you to turn in your Mac when you buy an iPad. Keep using them as long as you like, just don't think that your own personal preference (which is entirely rooted in the past) has anything to do with the way things are going to be.

Apple need to follow Microsoft Windows 10 on ARM and do MacOS on ARM.

I think they're already there, they just haven't figured out a way to tell Intel :D

I use a pc desktop. But for email, web browsing, PDF reading/markup, note taking - the ipad pro 12.9 is king - for me. My husband bought his 12.9 for controlling a soundboard, it is the perfect tool. Then he found reading books, web browsing, and email work exceptionally well. He still uses an imac at work for filemaker pro and printing labels and whatnot.

So no, the ipad can’t replace a laptop/desktop. But it can do some things exceptionally well.

It looks like Microsoft Word but you can use the Apple Pencil to make smart annotations on both Word and Apple Pages documents.
My husband and I are both moving to Pages on the mac and ipad. It is wonderful. We also use Readdle PDF Expert for markup.

Have been iPad Pro exclusive since September last year, I still have to find something I cannot do with it, it took a bit to get used to a new workflow, but now, I can say the iPad is a laptop replacement for many.

No it won't replace it for everyone (nor it is ment to otherwise they would not produce laptops anymore) but for many use scenario it is a full replacement.
Have you tried to connect an external HD?

Your first example sounds false, if it isn't, then it's a serious oversight with your openVPN app. iCloud, email, web, there are numerous ways to copy files onto an iPad that dont use itunes.

Second example is absolutely false. There's no need to use the built in Video app on an iOS device to get videos into and out of the device and play them. Look up "PlayerXtreme Pro" for one of dozens of examples. Hell if it's a native format you could load them all into iCloud drive.

Lets see, starting with the basic, cloud anything means someone elses computer/storage, so by consequence, someone that i dont know will have a copy of my openvpn profile.

Yet, because you and many others white knights, needs to daily go to the Internet to defend every single bulls*** move or decision that apple makes, the rest must also be that dumb?

Besides, again, why on this day and age, i need to jump thru so many hoops just to copy a file to a device that apple claims is a proper laptop?

Worse, how is that crap ok with you?

The funny part is that people do not understand that the "Pencil "is embraced as a DESIGN TOOL not as a pointing device, and had you tried using the stylus ehmm pardon pencil as a pointing device on the iPad you'd understand why it sucks at such job.

The Pencil is an awesome tool for the right "Jobs" ;)

P.S. Jobs was NEVER ever against design tools and the iPad is definetly NOT a large PDA :D

On the morning news radio I hear commercials from a hearing aid company that keeps referring to their product as a "hearing instrument".

There was a documentary video on the Coke vs Pepsi wars where during interviews, the CEO of Coca Cola constantly referred to Coke as a "sparkling beverage" while claiming that he has never drank Pepsi in his life.

Is there a marketing or psychological term for this blatant repeated use of alt vocabulary?

Nope, I have no need for that ;) (but there are some wi fi hdd that works quite well), as I said, it might not be for everyone, but if you embrace the new workflow it can do wonders some people really neeed a computer, but for many an iPad can do just fine).

I use streaming for Video and Music, and the cloud for file sharing / backup, and it does wonders, and for when i need to export my Affinity Photo retouches, there are plenty of USB sticks (even wireless one) that do the job.

Can your computer back up into tapes? Probably not, and as silly as it might sound it is what you are trying to do with the iPad, plug a very old tech to something new.

I agree that Apple views the iPad as a general purpose computer, but I don't support Apple's efforts to achieve this for one simple reason--it will be the end of Macs. Feel free to quote me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is Apple's vision--iDevices and eventually also SaaS.

I don’t think the Mac will go anywhere anytime soon, but if and when more people start transitioning from Macs to iPads, they may start resembling the Mac Pro in terms of update cycle. Like a minimal lineup of products (eg: MacBook Pro, iMac, iMac Pro) that gets updated every couple of years for the developers and people requiring more powerful hardware.

My daughter is studying vet med started with an iPad. Now uses a hybrid ASUS through the school. Said everyone in her classes uses a laptop. Tablets have vanished. She does use the iPad to read material.
She had my old Surface Pro but broke it
Of course she is. Try assembling a serious report with multiple references, documents, webpages open at the same time. Just impossible with iPad. Apparently, Apple is led by people that haven’t assembled a report since George Bush Sr.

While Apple is trying to make the iPad perceived to be a laptop...
Thx. But I m afraid Phil isn’t going to wake up over his TouchBar as nobody dares to disturb him.

Ah. And I guess next to surfing, you’re doing your e-mail and birthdays ?

And you would guess wrongly, mostly Photo edit with Affinity Photo, some youtube stuff with a GoPro, and lots of paper for work (Excel and Word mostly) and receipt.... yes WORK.

I also manage few website trought wordpress and keep them up to date, edit their plug in , all from the iPad.

Yes I do occasionally surf, mostly youtube, but I would not say it is my main task, Photo / Video and Documents....you know what you normally use a computer for.

Why are you so sour about people actually working on an iPad? It can be done, and quite well, not for veryone, but doesn't mean that if you can't nobody can't, oh and stop pretending your "work" is more important than others ;)

Someone jumped the gun. Wasn't suppose to be announced until tomorrow.

RIP iPad

It's now #1 Surface Go and #2 ChromeBook/Tablet.
And so much for andromeda, it seems. Funny how so many people were singing praises over what was clearly a doomed project to begin with.

The reality is that those surface go devices are going to be used primarily as laptops, while iPads are mainly used as tablets.

So there really isn’t much overlap between the two. I am not going to be replacing my iPad Pro with said device anytime soon, simply because the user experience is so very different.

The iPad will continue to do just fine. Much to the consternation of many an iPad hater here, no doubt.

Your iPad-centrism hasn’t inspired you yet to update your signature

Laptop replacement for me? Not even close. For that one family member that does very basic computer tasks....very close. However I know they would want a keyboard and mouse. Personally I think it would almost be better for them then their current laptop as it would be low maintenance likely be faster, better screen is a sure thing. They basically check webpages, e-mail and facebook, messenger. (They don't even use You Tube) *shrugs*

I'm a bit behind. One major thing would be needing to add or read video files from their device. I'll have to check on that.

Uhu? What does a signature about a vintage computer have to do with how I use my iPad? Now you are just trolling ;) .

On a serious note though, yes from time to time I still use the G5, but not because I have to, but because I like to....yes I am sucker for old stuff.

I said this before and I will say it again, iOS was made to compete against Nokia and Blackberries. It will not replace a laptop. This exact thing happened with the original Mac OS where Jobs said it started as one thing and they just kept adding to it technologies that it became clunky and bloated by OS 9. Jobs had the courage to switch to OS X which was ready for the future of technology.

Its time for Apple to ditch iOS and start something totally new, something for the future use of smartphones and tablets. Just adding pens, Files app, iCloud drive, and adding to the bloat won't fix it. Every one is complaining how Apple software is no longer intuitive and "just works" like it used to be.

That being said, I do realize Apple with their iPad laptop-replacement ads are reaching to the common consumer who is... a consumer. They just browse the net, view media, and socialize. many people have ditched their computers and are satisfied with just a smartphone...because thats all they want. Socializing, viewing media, internet access.

From your activities, I fail to see anything that would require a professional OS, Multi-windowing, high-bandwidth or large-scale storage.
So to call you a Pro from a computer users' perspective (whatever great content you make), would be a little much for me.
Sorry. But you're free to consider yourself a Pro - in the Cook definition of high-profile usage - so happy hiking with your iPad/G5.
(to be honest, I don't think Apple's modern nomenclature is helping this discussion very much - let alone themselves...)

Because the only thing worse than a butterfly keyboard is the smart keyboard. What a joy for, say, a copywriter to use the „replacement“ device. But keep on spamming us with this pr stuff, maybe some stuff sticks.

Never said I am a pro, never said I am not, and also never said theiPad Pro is a replacement for all needs you are just making stuff up.

Again why so sour?’ The iPad is not for you we get it, but doesn’t make other more or less of a pro based on what tool they use.

Use the tool you think it is best for you, why do you care about what I use to be or not a Pro?

By the way, Let’s define the word pro. For me a pro is a professional, one that earns money with his/ her work, and by that definition, I am a Pro. And the right tool for me to make money right now is the iPad, like it or not, might not be yours and I am happy you decided to go your way, but don’t pretend to be better than someone else because you use “ a computer “.
