Apple, shut up and just make new macs lol iPad is not a laptop.
An iPad will never be a laptop replacement without mouse support. An iPad is a superior product in many ways than a laptop, but for specific situations, a mouse is needed in order to truly replace the laptop.
Put a mouse and Desktop applications on the iPad and we can start talking about being a "real" replacement for a laptop.
You realize that the vast majority of the population will never want to do any of those things, correct? So the iPad can back up iPhones and other devices now? They can connect to / format external storage drives, run 3D printers and Blender?
No? Guess it isn’t a laptop replacement yet.
This. Apple isn’t saying the iPad is a laptop replacement for everyone (it’s not). But no doubt a lot of people were/are using their laptop for things that could easily be done on iPad.Lol why do some people seem to get irate that Apple is pushing the iPad as a laptop replacement? For a lot of people it is. Everything you “present” as “evidence” against the iPad being a replacement device is purely anecdotal. Hate to break it to some of you but the iPad/iPad Pro CAN be a computer replacement for some people. Not everyone is a “pro” user. I’d argue that half the people that refer to themselves as “pros” aren’t.

And where excactly is Apple saying that the iPad is a Mac replacement for pro users? They’re not saying that. The problem here is that Apple is assuming that nobody in a flight is going to open a Terminal and invoke the C compiler. And the shocking reality is that one of the main reasons why I switched to the Mac years ago is how well the Terminal worked (as opposed to Windows) in a computer that "just worked" (as opposed as a Linux PC).
But now, Apple says to us: "go away, use a Linux PC".
I can back up my iPad to my Mac. I won’t be able to do that with just an iPad.
Also I enjoy running full desktop applications on my MBP, it’s just not the same on a touch device.
Not yet anyways.
. . . . . It's just that even with the iPad Pro handwriting and note taking still doesn't feel like a first class feature of the iPad. It's good, but not still not great and I think Apple could do better especially if the are starting to promote this as a differentiating feature from the rest of the tablet market.
Are you saying it cannot do excel, word, or email?I regularly commute to London and what I see is 90% of the people using Excel and then followed by word docs and email etc. I see the same in coffee shops or hotel lobby when people are working remotely etc.
I like the iPad for personal use but I don't see how Apple can position it as a laptop replacement when it can't do the main tasks that people need it to do.
Thanks
It's funny how much Apple has embraced the stylus while Jobs was vehemently opposed to making the iPad a large PDA.
I have 12.9 (1), waiting for new same size screen (need more storage-notwithstanding cloud) and I think what you are saying is same screen size as 12.9 with smaller footprint. I’m all in for that but won’t give up my larger screensize.Really really looking forward to the iPad with FaceID. Hoping for the same size 12.9 but in a smaller form factor!
Why does it need to replace a laptop. My guess is a lot of people were/are using laptops for things that don’t require a precision pointing device. For me personally if Apple allowed media to be synced to music and TV apps, allowed metadata editing and provided access to this media in the Files app I’d never have a reason to use my old windows PC. The only reason I use it now is for things that can only be done with desktop iTunes.

I thought those ads were actually quite good. My iPad Pro is my favourite Apple product by far. I prefer the touch screen to a touchpad and mouse. My only gripe is that using the iPad can be frustrating sometimes as Apple have deliberately limited some of it’s functionality to the extent that you have to use it in conjunction with a computer so it’s not an entirely standalone device.
I prefer to think of the iPad as a laptop alternative for people who aren’t being adequately served by laptops. An iPad will never be a laptop replacement without mouse support. Documents app from Readdle. This is a continual annoyance, inflexibility of putting media on iOS devices. Android has this better, you can plug them in and copy media onto device. Same goes with emailed media, you cant store them on the iOS device directly from email or web browser - only PDFs and eBooks so far have this capability in iOS
I don't currently agree with that. A precision pen (with a very fine point) *could* recoup most all of the functions one would typically use a mouse for on a tablet (such as photo editing).
What functions do you find that necessitate a mouse?
Of those functions, which ones do you find that a pen could not do?
The first ad is for an iPad Pro and not a iPad. You cannot buy a detachable keyboard like the one shown for the iPad.

To use an analogy, these are the people who were trying to drive in screws using a hammer because the screwdriver hadn’t been invented yet. I can’t do everything I need to do on an iPad, but I find my iPad pro does what I need it to do well enough. For the rest, there’s my iMac and school-issued laptop and I am content to spread my work across so many different devices.
