Let's be honest. The iPad IS a laptop replacement for MOST people MOST of the time.

We aren't talking about Enterprise where you're using Access, Excel, and SQL all day. Most people sit on their computers and use them for:

Facebook
Google
Internet
Mail
Twitter
Snapchat
Instagram
Banking
Reading

iPad checks all of those and does some of them better because they were built on mobile.

This seemed like an inevitable to me. Most people bought a computer in the last 20 years mostly because they wanted internet access. But they didn’t really want a computer, just the internet. In an abstract way it’s like how if you wanted a portrait of your family. You’d either have to paint it yourself or hire an artist. Then photography became a thing, became cheap and accessible and the painted portrait remains on the fringes.

The problem here is that Apple is assuming that nobody in a flight is going to open a Terminal and invoke the C compiler.
Ridiculous
That assumption is entirely your own.
It could be easily assumed that Apple expects people who need to “invoke the C compiler” on a plane will opt to bring their MacBook or some other laptop.

It’s the OS. Until iOS supports all the same use cases as a laptop, it won’t ever fully replace a laptop. I can see how people were clamoring for a 13” laptop with touchscreen

Again, it depends on the user and their specific tasks. I have used an iPad Pro exclusively for work and personal use since 2017. So yes, it absolutely can replace a laptop. It did for me and does for many others. It's totally fine if it doesn't for you though.

My wife uses her iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. I know this because I have her laptop.. There was only one instance where she needed to borrow the laptop: A particular website required Flash in order to play a video.
She is the typical user case that Apple is targeting with these ads. I however use the laptop for my recording studio. I tried using the iPad but it just didn’t have a smooth enough workflow for me, or enough CPU power, RAM or storage. But for her it’s perfect. I say keep it up Apple keep making products people want. I know some of those sales $$ filter to the Mac product line and that’s what interests me

This is exactly what I have been saying that Apple is angling to do for the past few years now.

And, Apple will do something like this, then quickly start talking about how iPads aren't meant to replace laptops, but the ads they create say otherwise.

Truth is, Apple wants iPad to replace a laptop for MOST people. They want to scale back the laptop lines so they don't have to produce many variants. I just wish they'd actually admit it.

Yes, some people need an actual laptop or desktop machine. But, by the time Apple is done with this whole thing, MOST people probably will not need them for personal computing.

The iPad Pro is AMAZING ....LOVE IT

BUT it is definitely not a laptop .

Apple the videos are a “bit” unrealistic . How many here bring the iPad outside without a protective cover ?

Just imagine a student taking notes on a bare iPad ....cringe

And the all the scenarios the Apple Pencils will likely get lost easily LOL

What makes me worried is , can’t Apple see the difference between laptop and iPad ..
Apple do you use the iPad to render high definitions graphics of the next IPhone ?
Apple let be realistic , show us how many of Apple engineers / designers ONLY use an iPad at work ..

Then come and tell us it is laptop replacement

Agreed. That is why I said “fully”.

Apple, make a laptop half the size as mbp and name it whatever you want. That's what I want. Stop wasting time to change people's minds by ads. That's low.

How many general consumers are rendering high end graphics? I use my iPad without a protective cover... Seems to work just fine.

I remember in the 1980s when microwaves were touted (by some) as replacements for conventional ovens and even stoves.

Apple needs to be more sensitive to a vast base of consumers who prefer tactile, textured experiences over flat glass touch. I'm pleased to have my iPhone, but I *rarely* use my iPad Air 2 except for occasional browsing and games (and yes, that's me). I much prefer using a keyboard and mouse for writing, design, composing music, and other activities.

As such, Apple needs to get back on the stick of updating their desktops and laptops like they used to. Not all of us - and I suggest MOST of us - do not use an iPad more than their laptop or desktop.

That's fair, but it has "fully" replaced a laptop for some people.

By that token my iPhone is my laptop replacement. It can for me, maybe not for you.

I don’t need or want a laptop. Serves no purpose for my usage.

That's fine, all depends on the user. I can get by on my iPhone for work if needed in a pinch, but prefer my iPad Pro.

Apple is showing off their product in the videos. Why would they cover it up? :)

Of course, the average person is probably going to put some sort of case or cover on it.

Note: I use my iPhone X without a case. I know that everyone does not do this, but I prefer it.

This.

Apple seems vested in positioning the iPad as the general-purpose computer for the masses, and I fully support Apple's efforts in achieving this.

Lol. The iPad is a toy and nothing more. It will never replace a laptop/desktop

I can back up my iPad to my Mac. I won’t be able to do that with just an iPad.

Also I enjoy running full desktop applications on my MBP, it’s just not the same on a touch device.

Not yet anyways.
me too i enjoy running and using the ipad at the same time its hard..i tried my MBP too it wasnt the same and even harder !

Exactly right. People just want to read news, check social media, watch videos, and read mail. iPad is FANTASTIC for all of those, much better than a traditional PC/Laptop.

Frankly, even most executives at Fortune 500 companies need iPads because they don't do any actual work. The only people that need powerful PCs and Laptops are people that do things like crunching numbers, pulling data, animators, video editing, graphic design, etc. You know, real work. When people aren't working on complex tasks, an iPad is better anyway.

Do you actually think you understand Apple's customers better than Apple?

Remember, you are speaking for yourself and have a focus group of 1, NOT the Apple user base.

Apple also still makes Macs and Macbooks...

All the iPad needs is mouse/trackpad support, only then will it be a serious contender in the computer space.

Apple is more interested in redefining the modern computer than competing directly with existing PC form factors.

The future of the iPad is not to being exactly like the PC or Mac. Otherwise, that completely defeats the whole point!

A Toyota Camry is a great car that satisfies the general population. It works for a lot of people. If Toyota were to create an advertisement depicting a Camry roaring through the snow, it doesn’t mean it would be able to do what an AWD Subaru can. A Camry, while a great car for what it is, does not replace an AWD Subaru. If Toyota added AWD to the Camry (aka the mouse), then it could satisfy the Subaru crowd.
