Explain the notch and hump design..

You carry your phone with you possibly 8-12 hours a day. You possibly look at your iPhone 3-5 hours a day. That's ~1000-~2000 hours a year spent looking at a phone.

If you included a bezel at the top instead of a notch, that means you're shifted the status bar down a bit, essentially reducing the amount of space for user content, and have about 5% of space of the front panel doing absolutely nothing for the user. That's ~1000-~2000 hours a year where the user is viewing a useless bezel and viewing a screen that contains less space that could have been used for user content.

similarly, this reasoning can be applied to the headphone jack. the jack takes up ~1-~3% of the volume of the phone. Assuming you carry your headphones with you about 30 minutes-1 hour a day, you're better off carrying a dongle for 182-365 hours a year compared to carrying a useless port that could be used for battery or other essential technology for ~3000-~4000 hours a year.

They do what there told and the designs all stay the same. None of them care about changing things, same lame design
MacPro and Mac Mini will probably be dropped after the release the iMac Pro and the Macbook Air will be dropped next year.

That was savage! You gave definition to all of my shapeless thoughts regarding the incessant but otherwise pedantic complaints people keep posting!

I'm looking forward to hearing from him. People can say what they want about him, but I've is a forward thinking person, he's got no time for petty misadventures that many seem to endorse these days and that's why he's in that position of influence.

if someone is bored right now..
try to find out if you can attend only the Ive talk instead of paying according to participating in the entirety of the event.
thx
(otherwise, i’ll try to find out in a couple hours)

Overrated designer
who are some current designers that are acceptably rated and whose designs you appreciate?

just trying to gain some perspective regarding the comment you made.

(and hey... no googling ;) )

nvrmnd.. just realized this is a one-day event.. i originally assumed it was $1500 for, say, a long weekend or smthng..
so i highly doubt there will be something like a one-day pass or 1/2 day pass...

so yeah, $1500?
i'm not their target audience.. gonna be a bunch of suits up in there except 'not suits because we wear casual....' ;)

i'd be walking in there on an extended lunch break covered in saw dust : D

Ask him about that ugly red dot. And the notch full of tech nobody wants.

if you had a chance to ask j.Ive a question.. face-to-face.. is that really what you'd say?
if not, what would you hope to really ask/say?

I'd ask him do you think that red dot single handedly detracts from the Apple Watch matching with all the various band colors and occasions.

Do you think the notch looks better than no notch at all?
I dunno I hope the make iPhone SE2 id buy that. And iPad mini 5

apple engineering trade offs

Hey, I hate the iOS 11 app store design, it moves the app size deeper and make app reviews useless. I need to know the app size to decide if I want to update them on cell network! Who cares the review 5 years ago? I want to see reviews for the latest version! Last question, in search, why do I have to type app’s full name to find it???

Apple design chief Jony Ive is one of the planned speakers at TechFest 2017, hosted by The New Yorker. Set to take place on October 6 from 8:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m, the event will be held in New York City.

Ive will talk about "designing the future," according to The New Yorker. No additional information has been provided on what topics Ive will cover, but with the launch of the iPhone X approaching, it could come up during the discussion.

Well, I get the screen real estate argument but the headphone jack .. come on. The space saved was taken up by piece of plastic with doubtful use, not the battery not any other essential technology. The best guess what it does is some airflow thing for the barometer, not exactly essential. Literally a piece of plastic, not even electronics.
Besides, you will have to carry the dongle where ever you take your headphones (assuming you have a dongle for each pair of headphones) or more realistically wherever you take your phone. That is 3000-4000 hours of carrying a dongle for improved airflow .. that is exactly the type of crappy design decisions people get upset about (and I won't even start with all the stuff in ios).

Jony and his Animoji are going to speak in sync ;)

Maybe he’ll pick the poo face I’ve rthe monkey face.

Anyone else notice hat at Apple’s Steve Jobs Theatre special event he was ABSENT from all seatings?!

Wow.

Jonimoji? :D

Anyone find that photo odd?

i dont know whether its in 'fashion' but that portrait is clearly ... disturbing. he doesnt look like a designer. more like a sincity type movie actor...

Wouldn't surprise me to see Ive 'leave' Apple within the next 12 months. Maybe not formally sever ties like Woz, but certainly quietly abdicate much of his day-to-day role and responsibilities.

The campus is complete, the iPhone X (no doubt viewed internally as the start of next-gen devices) is in the open, and let's be honest, he's not winning any credible design awards ever again. His time is up.

Sure, he'll be wheeled out for tech talks like this one, and industry events when needed, or another bit of cringeworthy "charity" PR puff alongside his buddy Marc Newson with some pretentious monstrosity of "custom" Apple product, but suspect he'll quietly fade from the picture like a Keynote slide transition, and subsequently take up a directorship/consultancy or two, or even front a worthy but suitably grandiose academic initiative back in the UK.

I don't think it was just for the barometer. But ok, let's say we include a barometer, thicker battery, and a headphone jack. You're still carrying a headphone jack which means you're still carrying something that's redundant in your pocket since a lightning port can take care of the same purpose. Not just you, but millions and billions of users will carry a redundant port in their pockets.

Regarding the benefits of removing the jack: "Apple realized it was easier to install the new Taptic Engine for the pressure-sensitive Home button, implement a bigger battery, and reach an IP7 water resistance rating" https://www.macrumors.com/2016/09/07/apple-explains-headphone-jack-removal/

Not everyone carries headphones in their pockets 8-12 hours a day. But everyone carries a phone in their pockets 8-12 hours a day.

Note 8 is ip68, better than iphoneX ip67, and carries a headphone jack. They removed it to sell wireless headphones, lets be honest here.

It looks like someone's morphed his face with a photo of Steve Jobs - unless it's what happens to your face after staring at FaceID for too long...!

But it is not redundant .. I can connect a universally accepted standard headphone to one but not the other (without a dongle). By your logic we should remove the "redundant" front camera, the lower speaker, Bluetooth and/or wlan chip and volume buttons and many more things. Yeah, we could still do the "same" things as before (with adequate adapters, dongles, devices or software solutions) but it wouldn't be a nice phone anymore ..

Well if want to be able to connect to any headphone, music box, car audio that I could connect before, I sure do need to carry that dongle everywhere. Otherwise there will be situations where the phone is less useful than before.

Same with the latest MacBook by the way. The people I know have to carry around a zoo of dongles everywhere .. it is ridiculous.

Exactly and that stinks.

his time is up? designers generally work until they're dead.

Do you think the notch looks better than no notch at all?
me personally?

sure, in some ways, it looks better. (better than what though exactly? iPhone 6s?-yes ..Samsung S8?- yes)

i really like how the status bar stuff has their own little nooks to sit in and that they sit at the extreme top edge of the phone.. instead of impeding upon the app's canvas.. i would definitely say i prefer the look/layout in this regard.

i suppose some people would rather have a straight bezel going across the top then the status info sitting lower(further from the top edge)..
to me, that's not optimum use of space (nor does it look more 'cool') compared to the notch layout but maybe to others, it is?

i think there is currently a technical hurdle (for all manufacturers) that prevents an entire face of a phone to be edge-to-edge & top-to-bottom coverage..
if this hurdle weren't there, i think i'd rather nothing other than screen (no notch/no bezels) but under current limitations, yes, i'd prefer the nooks/notch other than a straight bezel up top.
