Apple today posted a new support document outlining the transition from the company's existing MobileMe service to the new iCloud service announced today. According to the document, Apple has automatically extended all MobileMe subscriptions active as of today through June 30, 2012 free of charge.
Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.
When iCloud rolls out later this year, MobileMe users will be able to keep their me.com email addresses and shift all of their mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service.

In anticipation of the forthcoming transition, Apple is no longer offering free MobileMe trials and no longer supporting MobileMe upgrades to Family Packs or storage capacity. For those users who have MobileMe activation codes that have yet to be applied, Apple has also posted information on how to request a refund.

Summer Just Started!

Am I the only one that's a little confused on the time difference. My Mobile Me will expire on June 30th, and iCloud will be released in the fall. What happens inbetween June 30th and the "fall"?

So glad I just renewed my family MobileMe account a few weeks ago... at least I get an extended subscription to a service that is being replaced in a month or two.

So I guess I just lost my MobileMe account then? I let it expire about a week ago as all the rumours pointed towards this free service so I wasn't about to pay for a renewal. Is there any way for me to recover that account?

Did you try to login and check it? For some I think they just got the free Find My Phone when it expired. But now you may have just have gotten it ALL back until 6/30/2012.

What about the photo galleries? These and the contacts are the best bits of mobileMe.

Loved the iCloud, iMessage, iOS 5 and bla, bla, bla. But I'm an active user of MobileMe and I'm sad that Apple forgot us. I subscribed to MobileMe 2 months ago because I thought Apple would remember me in case of death of MobileMe. But no. They forgot me. Thanks, Steve.

what about a full year paid refund?

my subscription renews in Jan 1, I paid for the full year, what about us that have paid a full year, why do we not get a refund, Mine would be $49.50

I'm not sure we've been forgotten in the big plan - its just they haven't really told us full details of how the MobileMe service will actually be the same but better if that makes sense

You will still get the service you paid for and decided to buy. Just there is something else available that is free. Why complain?

I renewed my mobile me-subscription june 1st via debit card. great.

Same here. January 15th. But I'm not going to demand a refund. It was money well-spent to begin with.

good point although I have paid it every year since day one of mobile me.. and I shouldn't complain , I bought lots of stock many years ago

Wow, people jumping on the complaints bandwagon. Were you not happy to pay for a service that you'll be using and getting value from? I guess it's hard to pay for something that others will be getting for free. But it ain't no slap in the face, if that's what you're thinking. In June 2012, your service will actually be downgraded to *just* iCloud.

well, many of us will long term loyal apple customers (31 years) will be paying extra for what everyone else will get for free

One year from January 2011 - January 2012 that you paid for.

Plus, six extra months from Jaunary 2012 - June 2012 that Apple is tossing in for free.

Why would you get a refund? You're getting more than you paid for, right?

I have a family plan with 40 GB that auto-renewed in May. Under the shutdown plan, I basically get one month free. No complaints from me.

My only question under the transition is what happens to my 40 GB iDisk? Will I be able to buy extra disk space for iCloud?

I presume that Apple will continue to offer that amount of space until the subscription ends. Apple cannot just decide to discontinue a subscription-based service without offering its customers a refund. So I guess they just retain each renewal at the same conditions until June 2012. Other users will get the basic package, perhaps with an option to pay for more space.

Hmm.... I let my MobileMe family account lapse on April 30th because I didn't want to pay the $150 since the $95 Amazon retail deal was no longer available. Disconnected my iphone and mbp from it after the few emails saying all my nonsense would be deleted May 15th.

Just went to me.com and signed in with my ID. All of the nonsense is still there. My account details have the following message:
Your subscription has been extended until Jun 30, 2012, at no additional charge

Sweet.

Because they knew the service would be free and they still took people's money.

Plus they are making us pay for yet another painful transition to a new service. Plus they are making us pay for a very problematic MobileMe service. For all the problems the service should have been free from the beginning.

Getting "value" from? It has no more value to use any of the other features because they will be discontinued and the value is in the ability to share photos, files, etc. indefinitely. Now we have to do additional work to get off this stupid MobileMe platform AND we have to pay for the pain that Apple is inflicting and they just don't care about the loyal users.

I don't understand the people who are saying not to complain.

Anyone who HAS had their renewal during May, and who did pay and didn't let it lapse, be very careful before cancelling.

I had a "cancel subscription" button in account settings which when I clicked on it offered a refund. I did this, thinking I'd get the above 'free' period. It didn't happen and I'm now setting up my gmail account and changing all my contact details!!

Awesome.

What a wonderful WWDC. I wanted more but now I believe Apple is on the right track.

This was just amazing.

I'll be using my iDisk's 20GB space till June next year though. :D
