Everything that I use MobileMe for will be free this fall.

I just renewed a month ago.

Sweet...

I'm not pissed, and I'm thrilled about iCloud and the announcement.

But do I feel like I just wasted $99, or at least about $49?

Absolutely.

Yeah. So I guess no one gets their $99 back they spent on MobileMe. I just renewed mine 2 months ago.

That's yet to be seen. I hope people who renewed recently should get their money back but since they extended it a yr that is probably less likely to happen

Service Downgrade for the Loyal!!

Wow, people jumping on the complaints bandwagon. Were you not happy to pay for a service that you'll be using and getting value from? I guess it's hard to pay for something that others will be getting for free. But it ain't no slap in the face, if that's what you're thinking. In June 2012, your service will actually be downgraded to *just* iCloud.

So, all my loyalty for MobileMe dollars paid, and my emails etc are going the way of the DoDo Bird.
I am NOT buying a new phone and computer again, just so I can use a service for free, that is screwing me out of the service I paid for, and expected to last.
What a hassle to now have to change my billing emails, subscription emails, family, friends and other assorted contacts to a new GMAIL address.
Too bad, so much for loyalty!!

Why do you have to change anything, let alone buy new equipment? Just switch your current info to iCloud and you keep all your information exactly as it is.

What I'm concerned about is my website that is hosted on MobileMe. What will happen to it?

Add me to the list of those who are wondering what the heck will happen to MoMe services like Gallery.

I finally settled on using MobileMe exclusively about 6 months ago, and have subsequently used the gallery extensively. I have probably 100 photos linked to threads on various forums that are referenced frequently. If Gallery goes away, every single thread out there with photos linked from MoMe Gallery will be 404'd.

I never really liked Flickr, Picasa, etc...can't say I was in-love with MobileMe Gallery either, but I liked the simple integration between it and everything Apple, so I settled on using it. Looks like I might have made a bad choice.

Reading through the comments, I see mostly irrational complaints.
1) if you think a service is good enough to pay for it, then they decide to give it for free, that does not entitle you to a refund! I would like one since I renewed in January, but to expect one is just stupid. They are giving everyone who has paid for MobileMe service 2-12 months free, stop complaining about it!
2) they stated that you can keep your .mac and .me email addresses.
3) iCloud migration is most likely going to be back-end with very little-to-no input needed from the user.

The valid points I see are:
1) are they going to keep all the MobileMe services? I would say that they will with some alterations to fit the new iCloud model. (ie. Somehow integrate gallery into the photo stream service).
2) iOS5 will only be avaliable for 3GS and up, so will the 3G not have any access to the iCloud services that they currently can access from MobileMe? Since the service is integrated into the OS, I would think not. But, they are giving you until June 2012 to upgrade from a 3G to a newer iOS device. That's a 4 year old phone at that point. I say get over it!

I'm confused about the people who say that depending on when you paid for MobileMe than you may get up to 1.5 years for free. The point is that 90% of the features in MobileMe are going to be free come fall. You paid for 1 year of a premium service and now people will get access to most of those for free. You didn't just pay for iDisk, you paid for it all. I, for one, am furious if I just paid for family subscription on May 16 however if I cancel it now I loose evything until icloud comes out. It's like if I pay a for a season pass for Disney, and a month later everyone can go for free, that wouldn't fly. I think Apple needs to publicly announce a way for people to get a refund if you want one. I'll be calling tomorrow trying to get one.

Shame on Apple!

It's a shame Apple don't have all answers to MobileMe subscribers with a huge change, they don't know nothing! A Web Page explaining everything , so simple, why they don't do it?
Shame Apple! Shame Steve Jobs! "It's not your finest hour"

As has been stayed before, if you didn't think the service was worth paying for, you shouldn't have paid for it.
If you paid for it, you obviously thought it was worth it.
The fact that they have announced that you will no longer have to pay for it doesn't change the fact that you agreed to pay for the service. Why should they give you a refund if they continue to offer you the service that you paid for, and even extended the service for free through June of 2012.
Also, the fact that iCloud comes out this fall doesn't mean that you don't still have MobileMe service through June 2012.

Very happy- my MobileMe account was due to expire next month! I got it for the Find My iPhone feature alone- my wife misplaces hers regularly.....!

Whilst I thought that Mobile Me had a very difficult birth, it certainly seemed to be coming along nicely of late, I'd just got my iCal and Contacts and email to sync seamlessly between my laptop, phone and webmail. I was quite happy. I can see they want to introduce a bigger and better beast, but what was so wrong with building on the platform that was mobile me, instead of wiping it away like a nasty stain.

I love using galleries, and iDisk. I can only assume that these will be reincarnated in iCloud. I can see a subscription fee for larger iDisks being in place, so if you want 20GB of space, you pay for it. I would like to know what they plan to do about galleries, as I find this a great way to share photos with family around the world without using 3rd party hosting sites which I don't trust.

I have also, just renewed my subscription, which is fine - this will be the last time I have to pay for the basic service, I get to keep my email - which is mercilessly spam free, and I presume I can upgrade my service if I need to.

I hope Apple provide a web based email login still though, to replace the mobile me login website...

More like 50% of the features. Some create web sites, other have extra storage with iDisk, etc.

I don't understand why people are upset with their recent mobileme renewals.

This is located on the refund page.

If your activation code was used for 46 days or more

You will receive a pro-rated refund, minus any shipping costs or rebates that were applied to your original purchase.

This would imply that you can use your subscription until the icloud registration begins and then cancel your mobileme subscription. You would then be refunded a pro-rated amount based on how many months are left in the subscription.

really want to know about iweb integration/hosting, idisk, large file sharing and that 20gb of storage... all the things i really use on mobileme. anyone any clues?

I feel exactly the same way... I renewed on May 17th, so this June 30th 2012 "gift" is nit really so, as I already paid for most of that time. I agree that after the service becomes free, we should get a refund for the "unused" portion of the $99 subscription, since it will be free for all.

Very confused with this, and if I'm paying for months that others will have for free, I'll be upset too..

I *REALLY* wonder what's going to happen to the services that haven't been announced as being part of iCloud - such as website hosting? I have been running my personal website via MobileMe since it was iTools... They retired the old .Mac HomePages just last year, after having them 'frozen' for a couple years before that. Are they going to kill MobileMe's iWeb-integrated Web pages as early as a year from now?

I as wondering this myself. I build sites for the local high school all the time, and publish them to their MobileMe account, so I start building my own. I was getting ready to actually launch my personal Business on the MobileMe service, since I pay for it and am limited in the money for Internet hosting.

I wonder if we can use some of that 5GB for web hosting. Or if by fall they introduce a package themselves for extra gigs or new web hosting idea.

I bought MobileMe with my computer in June '09. Then made sure it wasn't auto renewal incase a new product came out.
Two weeks ago I got the renewal email, but ignored it, reading MacRumors.
I feel bad for the people, but they also signed on, and wanted the service, if they paid for it.

Getting "value" from? It has no more value to use any of the other features because they will be discontinued and the value is in the ability to share photos, files, etc. indefinitely. Now we have to do additional work to get off this stupid MobileMe platform AND we have to pay for the pain that Apple is inflicting and they just don't care about the loyal users.

I don't understand the people who are saying not to complain.

there was zero pain from @mac to @me and there will probably be zero pain from @me to ???...I LOVE HAVING BOTH EMAIL ACCOUNTS TO USE, so, really, what the heck r u complaining about???

It seems that many people would be happier if Apple was charging for iCloud.

They say we are getting 5GB of storage for free. Which may suggest we will be able to buy more if we wanted. They also mention that the pictures, books , documents, email and bookmarks shared through the cloud don't use any of that 5GB. So its ours to use how we wish I would imagine. Websites, videos, Galleries ...etc. I'm worried about is my 3 iWeb sites which I update and use extensively. I also like to post HD videos that people can watch online. I hope we can still do that. Being able to send password protected shared file links was also a useful tool. (fingers crossed)

That's what I want to know! What's going to happen to My Gallery???
I use that a lot!

Be proactive and back up everything before next year. Move your photos and back up your contacts on another iOS device, if you have one. That's my plan.

I didn't change to @me.com when it changed a few years ago. Not sure if the new migration will be the official death of @Mac.com...I hope not, but with all the features replicating what we are paying for right now, changing it from Mac to me is a small inconvenience.

Chatted with MobileMe support person late last night. Asked about continuation of iDisk etc. She knew nothing... absolutely nothing. Told me to check the iCloud page at Apple on a regular basis.

Like many of you I had established a good workflow around iDisk sharing services. Discontinuing those would be highly disrespectful of existing customers.

I am afraid Steve Jobs hates file-systems too much. He must hate iDisk. He is obsessed and hopes iCloud will make the file system completely invisible. But what is the difference, if every app has a different little file-system in the shape of a long gallery of documents. To be honest the set-up drives me nuts.

I don't know where it's heading, but I will not be buying any new Mac stuff till it all pans out in Autumn.

The title of this thread is a bit off. Apple hasn't detailed anything. I (as well as most people from what I see) have more questions than answers. Looks like the Apple folks haven't decided yet how the transition is going to roll out otherwise why wouldn't they tell the whole story?

This waiting game till fall is quite annoying if you ask me.
