Anyone who HAS had their renewal during May, and who did pay and didn't let it lapse, be very careful before cancelling.

I had a "cancel subscription" button in account settings which when I clicked on it offered a refund. I did this, thinking I'd get the above 'free' period. It didn't happen and I'm now setting up my gmail account and changing all my contact details!!

UPDATE ON THIS - My mobileme came back to life this morning, so it's working again, and I have the refund. So looks like you can cancel, but it may not work for a few hours. When I cancelled mail sent to the email address failed completely so it might be that they are doing manual restores.

I feel I am very lucky, I had a trial subscription to mobileme and was going to sign up this weekend, but now I don't have to

I would have been really mad if I had just paid. Apple really should refund clients that have paid recently.

Being new to Apple it has already cost me €100's to buy mac software to replace my windows software.

Maybe in future a little bit of coimmunication from apple would help......

i am totally in the same boat as a MobileMe user, but we are still getting what we paid for. You still get Mobile me for the specified time, actually longer. Just because other might receive similar, free, functionality shouldn't affect the way you see the deal.

Its like buying an ipod touch and then moaning that someone else got one free of charge in some deal, you still have yours.
IMO

just really interested to know how email will work in iCloud. Makes you wonder why they bothered with a sort of stepping stone of MobileMe if they knew iCloud was coming.

The good:
- no more paying $129 for the family account
- keeping all my @me.com addresses for free

The unknown:
- website hosting
- idisk
- galleries

The bad:
- have to buy a new iPhone as my 3G will not be able to sync using iCloud and no more be able to sync using mobileme next year

Pondering the future of my invaluable iDisk

Like many people have pointed out, the email we received from apple actually poses more questions than anything else. My biggest concern as someone who sold his MacBook Air in favour of an iPad for university is the future of iDisk as I am totally reliant on it for accessing various files and folders needed for my work.

I think in the keynote Steve Jobs said that the code which allows apps to utilise the iCloud services and handle their own files within the app would be released to developers but I very much doubt all the developers of the apps I currently use will jump onboard so quickly. I guess its a case of just waiting to see what apple announce - at least we have until next summer to decide what we'll do with our apparently soon to be axed services.

Website hosting now free?

my mobileme trail was finishing this month, now extended to June 2012 for free.
it seems that my website hosting will remain free as well till then!
i wonder if iCloud will continue web hosting as it was not mentioned in the keynote

This thread is a perfect example of people making assumptions and then getting angry because they don't like those assumptions.

Apple could probably have been a bit better with their communication, but iCloud was only announced yesterday and it isn't introduced for a few months. MobileMe will run for another year so there is plenty of time to clarify the issues.

People are complaining that they may not be able to use their mac.com emails. Apple have stated that they will.

People are complaining that they are paying for a service that others are getting for free. Actually, it isn't free (possible betas aside) until later in the year. At that point, people can cancel their MobileMe subscription and get a pro-rata refund. That seems very fair to me. It even looks possible that you may be able to cancel now and still keep the service but I don't think I'm willing to risk that yet.

If you have old hardware that won't run iOS5 then you may have a complaint, but in effect all apple is doing is pulling a service after giving plenty of warning. That is something that companies do fairly regularly.

Personally, I use iDisk a lot and there are a lot of unanswered questions about that. The fact that I don't know the answers to those questions today, 390 days before iDisk will be pulled isn't a great concern to me. There is plenty of time for answers to come, to review the new service later this year and to find alternatives from elsewhere if necessary.

Honestly, peoples lives would surely be much easier if they waited to find out the details rather than getting angry now, when they don't know if there is an issue or not.

The title of this thread is a bit off. Apple hasn't detailed anything. I (as well as most people from what I see) have more questions than answers. Looks like the Apple folks haven't decided yet how the transition is going to roll out otherwise why wouldn't they tell the whole story?

This waiting game till fall is quite annoying if you ask me.

I agree.
So they send a vague mass mailing… nothing detailed about it.

So we get an extension to end June 2012. Big whoop. So what? I already paid till mid May 2012…

I also agree it appears as if the details are being worked out on the fly so to speak. Go to the MobileMe "community" on Apple's site and all you see are unanswered questions.

Oh Apple. Get it right.

This thread is a perfect example of people making assumptions and then getting angry because they don't like those assumptions.

There is no need to be an apologist for a multi billion dollar corporation's poor communication skills.

I would like a link to that please. :)

I'm not being an apologist for anyone.

OK, from earlier in this thread:

I don't understand why people are upset with their recent mobileme renewals.

This is located on the refund page.

This would imply that you can use your subscription until the icloud registration begins and then cancel your mobileme subscription. You would then be refunded a pro-rated amount based on how many months are left in the subscription.

Edit: A bit of that last quote didn't come out. It says:

"If your activation code was used for 46 days or more

You will receive a pro-rated refund, minus any shipping costs or rebates that were applied to your original purchase."

Honestly, peoples lives would surely be much easier if they waited to find out the details rather than getting angry now, when they don't know if there is an issue or not.

So you just posted to complain that people are complaining.

People here have legitimate concerns and Apple announced a new product without taking the time to explain how the transition will work. We all realize this will not happen for some months, but Apple could have easily taken the time to post up the answers to some of these concerns.

Well, someone else above says they have tried it and after a short break in service they believe that they have it until next June.

The point of what I am saying is that lots of people here are getting angry about having to pay for something that others are getting for free whilst the information from that webpage suggests that isn't the case.

Again, communication could be better, but I think people are getting angry about specifics that will prove not to be the case.

So you just posted to complain that people are complaining.

I could ask why you posted to complain about me complaining about people complaining.

But I won't. Instead I'll say that I posted to point out to people who seem to be missing some facts that may be of use to them.

The BIG question

The BIG question that remains unanswered is this:

What happens to current Mobile Me users who do not (or cannot) upgrade their machines to OS/X 10.7? Specifically, what happens with any @me.com email addresses for those who don't upgrade? Also, what happens to any iDisk storage for those who don't upgrade?

What is likely to happen is that Apple will screw over all the OS/X 10.5 people just like they've screwed the 10.4 users who lost their iCal synchronization a few months ago.

Dropbox is the answer?

Like many people have pointed out, the email we received from apple actually poses more questions than anything else. Have you tried Dropbox? It's free, and more reliable (IMO)

Damn… It looks like Apple isn’t sure what to do… What about iDisk, Galleries, website-hosting, etc.???

I don't mind the complaining. Complain a lot & LOUDLY!

Enough people distressed about their ".Mac" & MobleMe features that may go away, the more likely Apple will make them part of iCloud.

Can't complain. This has game-changer written all over it if it proves to stand up to real world, non-Beta punishment and avoid MobileMe launch redux.

The only missing piece I can think of is online editing of Pages/Numbers/Keynote docs, meaning we need a free, web-based iteration. Apple can continue to charge a few bucks for local iOS and OS X versions for those that need to work when not in vicinity of online access (ex. on a plane). The online version would not need to be fancy, just basic editing on par with Google Docs leaving the heavy lifting for the local versions.

Have you tried Dropbox? It's free, and more reliable (IMO)
I should have mentioned this; Dropbox is free for the first 2 GB and goes far to replace iDisk functionality. Even better, Dropbox is multi-platform including Linux. And It looks like I just might move most of my development work over to Linux anyway.

But I don't know offhand if Dropbox is compatible with OS/X 10.4 & 10.5 (both PPC). There are many, many 10.4 and 10.5 users with significant investments in iMac G5 and PowerMac G5 machines who can't upgrade to Lion (actually, they can't run 10.6 either). If Apple abandons these users then Apple shouldn't be surprise when users start abandoning them.

Apple support

I don't mind the complaining. Complain a lot & LOUDLY!

People should register their dissatisfaction through the Apple feedback forms. I just chatted to a Support Rep, and while polite, they didn't know more than you or I...

Do you know why you would be unable to upgrade to Lion?

Yes, because I have an early 2006 Core Duo iMac, which will be unsupported by Lion

This is a good question, since we are all preparing for the transition to the new iCloud service. At this time, Apple has not released any information about hosting websites in iCloud. However, I will indefinitely escalate this question for you. The iCloud service is not set to be released until Fall 2011, so there are features that Apple are actively working on before officially releasing the iCloud service. Your current MobileMe features and services will still remain active for you until the transition is completed on June 30, 2012. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4597?viewlocale=en_US is an article directly from Apple that will update any features and services that will available with the new iCloud. This will be the best place to check for any updates about this service until the iCloud becomes available in Fall 2011.

Ok, so essentially your saying you have no information as yet, other than that link?

That is correct.

Ok, well I don't press for anything more then. But if I could register as a paying member of MobileMe my disappointment how Apple has handled the transition

I can direct you to the Apple feedback page. We place a high priority on customer feedback here at Apple, and our products and services evolve as a direct result of it. You would be able to leave feedback on MobileMe here, whether it be positive or negative. http://www.apple.com/feedback/mobileme.html

If you can't use a native Dropbox client on these versions, can't you still use the web interface? Not elegant, but you would still be able to access your files.

A quick check of the Dropbox web site says that the application works with OS/X 10.4, hence it's PPC compatible as well. So it's all good.

So it's Dropbox for me, at least for some of Mobile Me's functionality.

Now I'll have to find a mail replacement. This is a pain as it means changing a an address that's been in use for TEN years.
