So what does our email address become? @icloud.com....

No - Steve said with iCloud comes @me accounts, they're just free now.

@coolfactor you signed up in January and are worried about the service expiring on you before you get your year you probably missed that you @me account is extend to June 30 2012...not 2011 so you actually get a year and half

What about the photo galleries? These and the contacts are the best bits of mobileMe.

I have the same question. I can't find any information about galleries although it's possible that will come. I got MobileMe mainly for the calendar, contact syncing between devices even though I could have done it for free with other solutions. MobileMe was the most efficient and streamlined and seemed worth it. I love the simple gallery interface though, so I moved everything from Flickr which I've never loved. I hope they keep a gallery feature.

How much money will be refunded?

If your activation code was used for 46 days or more

You will receive a pro-rated refund, minus any shipping costs or rebates that were applied to your original purchase.

Note: Your refund will be calculated based on the date you submitted your request.

Am I the only one that's a little confused on the time difference. My Mobile Me will expire on June 30th, and iCloud will be released in the fall. What happens inbetween June 30th and the "fall"?

Did they not say that if you are a CURRENT MobileMe subscriber, your account has been extended until June 30, 2012? It's not June 30th yet, therefore that would be current.

my subscription renews in Jan 1, I paid for the full year, what about us that have paid a full year, why do we not get a refund, Mine would be $49.50

You are getting an extension until June 30th 2012.

good point although I have paid it every year since day one of mobile me.. and I shouldn't complain , I bought lots of stock many years ago

Same here, I have had MobileMe from day one. Loved it, no complaints here, money well spent.

So I guess I just lost my MobileMe account then? I let it expire about a week ago as all the rumours pointed towards this free service so I wasn't about to pay for a renewal. Is there any way for me to recover that account?

I'm in the same position. However, don't worry about losing it. The account is still there, we just won't be able to access it until the Fall I guess. When I tried to log in it wouldn't let me and said:

"Your MobileMe subscription has ended and can't be renewed. This Apple ID can still be used for other Apple services. Learn More(link)."

The link goes to the page outlining the transition.

If anyone has better info I would love to hear it.

UPDATE: I just got done with MobileMe support and they extended my account. If, like me, you failed to renew, just contact them, they might give you the extension.

My subscription automatically renewed three weeks ago. How about refunds for the unused portion, considering that those persons who let them lapse got a free upgrade?

iCloud sounds fantastic, but this makes me unhappy. Refunds for those who auto renewed within say the last month would seem appropriate.

Getting "value" from? It has no more value to use any of the other features because they will be discontinued and the value is in the ability to share photos, files, etc. indefinitely. Now we have to do additional work to get off this stupid MobileMe platform AND we have to pay for the pain that Apple is inflicting and they just don't care about the loyal users.

I don't understand the people who are saying not to complain.

Based on what I read, your MobileMe account will still be the same up to June 30, 2012. That means you have over 1 year to figure out what to do after the subscription ends.

Additional work, you get iCloud in the FALL when it is available with iOS 5 and you type in your Apple ID. What is the additional work with that?

I think by extending MobileMe to June of next year, Apple are setting the expectation that anyone who has paid for it is getting the full term of service. It just so happens that iCloud comes along before that term is potentially up and replaces a lot of that functionality for free. It's still not clear that everything MobileMe does now will be in iCloud (galleries, web-based mail, calendaring etc) so there is still some value to MobileMe beyond iCloud's release.

This is speaking as someone who just two weeks ago auto-renewed their subscription to MobileMe and would more than happy to take a partial refund! Either way, I'm still getting the service I paid for, they aren't shutting it off before my subscription ends.

That's what I want to know! What's going to happen to My Gallery???
I use that a lot!

Except of course that all of that, including iDisk and Gallery, pretty much become valueless as soon as you say "and on July 2012 we kill them all".

.Mac addresses

I have had .Mac and then MobileMe for many years and I love my mac.com email address. I really hope I can still keep it. My business cards will be all messed up if not..... any body know if this will be kept??

I *REALLY* wonder what's going to happen to the services that haven't been announced as being part of iCloud - such as website hosting? I have been running my personal website via MobileMe since it was iTools... They retired the old .Mac HomePages just last year, after having them 'frozen' for a couple years before that. Are they going to kill MobileMe's iWeb-integrated Web pages as early as a year from now?

It's not valueless if Apple don't offer it elsewhere. How else am I going to share photos on the web? If they don't integrate it into iCloud I'll have to go back to Flickr or choose another service. At least I have until July 2012 to make that transition.

From TFA, also quoted in the MR post:

When you sign up for iCloud, you'll be able to keep your me.com or mac.com email address

Just received this email from The MobileMe Team at Apple:

Dear MobileMe member,

We'd like to share some exciting news with you about iCloud — Apple’s upcoming cloud service, which stores your content and wirelessly pushes it to your devices. iCloud integrates seamlessly with your apps, so everything happens automatically. Available this fall, iCloud is free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users.

What does this mean for you as a MobileMe member?

When you sign up for iCloud, you'll be able to keep your MobileMe email address and move your mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service.

Your MobileMe subscription will be automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After that date, MobileMe will no longer be available.

When iCloud becomes available this fall, we will provide more details and instructions on how to make the move. In the meantime, we encourage you to learn more about iCloud.

Sincerely,

The MobileMe Team

Anyone else get this email?

filler

At least I don't have to pay $99 annual for this service ever again. :)

Within 45 days of paying you can get a full refund. Just hit up support.

I got it too. Hey, you paid for a service, you still have a service, you also got an extra period that could be as long as a year. So enjoy what you paid for knowing you have locked in an Apple ID that no one else can get and will be yours forever.

My take

I have been using an Apple mail account for years because I don't particularly like the legal theory that if you use your company e-mail account then your boss owns your mail, can read it, punish you for using it for what he considers inappropriate purposes, etc. etc. So I have two problems. First, since I got on the bandwagon early I've always used "mac.com" in my e-mail address. Now it seems I'm going to be being forced to use "me.com." Changing addresses and notifying everyone about them is always a pain in the butt. Second, when I'm on the road or during certain kinds of service interruption I occasionally do have to rely on Apple's webmail version, and I'd hate to lose that resource. Apple, why the hell can't you let us alone when we're happy as clams with what we have already?

[iCloud is for teenagers I'dont get ....very lame....I wanna know about the galleries and the web hosting......very sad day! Thanks Steve :(
